Local Search: Technically optimised for Reviews & Stars, but not showing in SERPS
-
Hi,
for over a year now we actively use schema.org into our yellow pages platform.
Simultaneaously we managed to set up a review platform to attract more users to write reviews. We also monitor closely local search experts like (blumenthal and co ). So I learned in this post http://blumenthals.com/blog/2013/07/19/how-many-reviews-to-get-the-star-treatment-somewhere-between-4-and-5/ that it takes you 4-5 reviews to get the star treatment by Google.
But at this moment, I cannot find any star treatment. For example on this listing http://www.goudengids.be/hollywok-kortrijk-kortrijk-8500/1/ you can notice the presence of 6 review (http://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/richsnippets?q=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.goudengids.be%2Fhollywok-kortrijk-kortrijk-8500%2F1%2F) but in Google itself it is not displayed as such.
So my question is: in your experience, are there any other parameters that will trigger the stars to appear?

Basically I learned that you cannot put schema markup in tags, everything is fixed now.

Hi,
I received an answer from the Google Rich Snippets Team. For the moment I cannot fully understand what this all means. Seems I'm hiding content, but not clear yet how. If any of you experts can help me out. I'll try to get an answer at google.
This is the mail i received this morning:
Hello Pieter,
Thank you for your interest in rich snippets for your site.Google can’t display rich snippets for your site goudengids.be because of the following issue(s):
Your content is marked up for rich snippets. But all the values of the attribute has been marked up under the content attribute. We allow the use of content attribute only when we need values in the machine readable format such as for currency. Please markup the actual content on the webpage.
Example URL:-http://www.goudengids.be/mort-subite-a-la-brussel-1000/#sayso-reviews
Markup Type: Review-aggregate
Hidden content:
http://schema.org/CafeOrCoffeeShop">http://schema.org/PostalAddress"> http://www.alamortsubite.com" />http://schema.org/AggregateRating">http://schema.org/Review">http://schema.org/Rating"> http://schema.org/Review">http://schema.org/Rating">
Once you have fixed your markup, run your pages through the rich snippets testing tool <http://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/richsnippets> to check for errors. When you’re all set, use the rich snippets submission form <http://www.google.com/support/webmasters/bin/request.py?contact_type=rich_snippets_feedback>
to resubmit your site.
Thanks again,
Google Rich Snippets Team

Hi Goudengids,
Thank you for explaining that! I think some members may have assumed you were a local business owner hoping stars would show up from your single business website, but now you've clarified this. I have never worked with a YP site, hands on, but I think two things would be at play here.
-
That you've got correct markup on your individual pages. Use: http://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/richsnippets to check if your markup is correct.
-
The authority of your pages, in Google's mind. Could there be any issues going on with duplicate content between goudengids.be and goldenpages.be? Typically, I see YP sites have a single domain with sub-sections for different languages, so the structure you are using is not what I'm used to seeing.
Also, how well you manage your review base may be a factor. For example, on a page like this one, I see 3 identical reviews: http://www.goudengids.be/qn/business/detail/en_BE_YP_PAID_248495_0000_76551_7575_2013000536113021/
You know how strict Yelp is with their filters and quality controls. Your YP might consider implementing stricter quality controls, too, in order to influence Google's 'trust' of your product.
Just some suggestions, and I do hope you will get a helpful answer at Google's support forum.

Hi Miriam,
we are the official belgian yellow pages website www;goudengids.be, with platform i was referring to our website.
-
Hi Goudengids,
Can you explain this in a little more detail:
"for over a year now we actively use schema.org into our yellow pages platform."
Do you mean you are running a yellow pages-type website? Or something else? More detail would be helpful, and it's good you've started a thread in the Google support forum. Some very smart folks there, for sure!
-
Hi, thx for the link to the support page.
I believe our markup is according the guidelines, no errors in the rich snippets tool, so therefore i posted the question on https://support.google.com/webmasters/contact/rich_snippets_feedback
I'll keep you posted if I receive any feedback.

In addition to Bereijk's answer, have you tried testing it with the Google Structured Data Testing Tool? http://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/richsnippets

Help: trying to get social media channels to show up in SERP knowledge panel
I have embedded the code intended to tell Google which social media profiles (Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, LinkedIn, etc...) are associated with client on their website. It was done via the Yoast SEO plugin for WordPress. I have also tested that code on Google's structured data testing tool and it checks out. I had previously used another SEO audit tool (Seomator) and that said it checked out as well. However... the SERP for this client is still showing only their basic Google business listing info and not the additional panel showing their associated social media channels. I followed some instructions (https://developers.google.com/webmasters/social-markup/#my_social_media_profile_isnt_displaying) searching to fix this problem at the Google developer site and it said something about clicking "feedback" at the bottom of the knowledge graph panel and then clicking on "wrong?" over the name and then entering something about how it's not displaying the social media channels. The problem is I don't see this text: "wrong?" anywhere to click on. Been troubleshooting this for a month now and can't find an answer. Did I do something wrong like not turning around once counterclockwise and barking like a seal? 😉

Optimising Widgets of Content with Yoast
Hi Guys, I am working on a client's website and the developer has built multiple pages using Widgets for Content. When using Yoast on a Page level it is not recognising the keyword focus or the content for review. Is there something I am missing or does anyone have any recommendations?

Image Search
Hello Community, I have been reading and researching about image search and trying to find patterns within the results but unfortunately I could not get to a conclusion on 2 matters. Hopefully this community would have the answers I am searching for. 1) Watermarked Images (To remove or not to remove watermark from photos) I see a lot of confusion on this subject and am pretty much confused myself. Although it might be true that watermarked photos do not cause a punishment, it sure does not seem to help. At least in my industry and on a bunch of different random queries I have made, watermarked images are hard to come by on Google's images results. Usually the first results do not have any watermarks. I have read online that Google takes into account user behavior and most users prefer images with no watermark. But again, it is something "I have read online" so I don't have any proof. I would love to have further clarification and, if possible, a definite guide on how to improve my image results. 2) Multiple nested folders (Folder depth) Due to speed concerns our tech guys are using 1 image per folder and created a convoluted folder structure where the photos are actually 9 levels deep. Most of our competition and many small Wordpress blogs outrank us on Google images and on ALL INSTANCES I have checked, their photos are 3, 4 or 5 levels deep. Never inside 9 nested folders.

So... A) Should I consider removing the watermark - which is not that intrusive but is visible?
B) Should I try to simplify the folder structure for my photos? Thank you0 -

Yahoo Local SERPs Index Issue
I recently updated all my website page Titles and was checking to see how many have been crawled so far. On Yahoo/Bing I noticed something very strange when entering site:bandpages.ie in the search field. Selection Buttons (top of SERPs): 'Web' search shows all my pages indexed 'UK' has has most pages 'Only In Ireland' has just 1 page indexed - which is the site RSS Feed and nothing else! The site has been live for 2 years now. Considering we don't trade with the UK and our main focus is here in Ireland - what is going wrong? Why doesn't Yahoo/Bing index list the site pages in the Ireland index? Any insights or solutions appreciated...

Different serps
Hi, I seem to be making progress in recovering from penguin/panda. (maybe) However I get vastly different results if I search google in different ways for example if I specify the geographic location as US (I am in the UK) for prom hairstyles ie http://www.google.com/search?q=prom+hairstyles&gl=us (which I believe gives the SERPs for the US or at least it used to) my site (prom-hairstyles.org) comes in at number two or sometimes on the second page. But if I just search google.com it comes in at 450 or so. My question is do you get the same and why such a big difference? Thanks, Ian

The name of the business is Rick Case Hyundai. However, it appears as Rick Case Honda(see attached screenshot). Any recommendation on how to fix this and why is this happening? Regards Neil azJCR.png

Authorship and picture in search results
Tim and Kris Hallbom at this site: nlpca(dot)com are authors of several books and many great articles, and they would like their picture to show up in their search results. Articlebase.com contacted us and called it authorship, and said that they could get our picture to begin showing up in appropriate google searches. But we don't want to go through Articlebase.com, how do we do this? Thank you.
