Does having a link in a clear advertising area diminish the value?
-
We were pleasantly surprised when a new skateboarding magazine/blog popped up recently. We have a good working relationship with the guys who run the site and they dropped our logo and a link to our site on the home page of their blog.
As a national skateboarding retailer, this is the kind of site we would naturally show up on with link, logo, content, etc. So we feel we gained a highly relevant, potentially valuable link. One question came up, however: by being linked to in an area that's clearly designated for advertisers, is our potential link value diminished?
See the site and our placement here (rt column, Tactics logo):http://www.curbcutmag.com/
Curious what some of you think.

I'm not aware of the actual effect of allowing link juice for banner ad links, but I assume Google is figuring out ways to devalue those links if they haven't already! If it's paid..I'd just add the nofollow to be safe!

Great reminder Ricky, if you are getting paid, then disclose and no-follow. Thanks Ricky

Hi Jeremy
Congrats on a great link and a great placement. I would question your comment that its in an area that is clearly designated for advertisers, even thought the right column has been used many times for ads. There is nothing that tells google it is in a place for an ad. Also you do have the benefit of attracting young population who are not so familiar with ad tactics and just see it as a great link to great products, that the magazine endorses.
In some ways getting a link that takes so much of website real estate on a nice layout. Your link is in a great position. And its a followed link. Plus the link is actually in a sidebar which is used in post of their pages so your link is not just on the homepage it is as good as getting a footer link that applies to all pages
Again congrats, and hope that helps.

Local Listing Directories value
Hello fellow mozzers, I would like to start a discussion on whether certain local listing directories are worth it. Most people are of course familiar with Google+ Local(Google Places), Yahoo Local, Bing Local, Yelp, Hotfrog etcetera.. I know there are a lot more of these big local listing directories. I am situated in Holland and we have a lot of small local listing directories.
Image & Video Optimization | | WesleySmits
Some of these directories are not really good quality. For example:
http://dordrecht.cylex-bedrijvengids.nl/bedrijf/pizza-presto-dordrecht-12014914.html This domain is filled with ads in prominent locations. They have a domain authority of 44 and as far as i can tell there are close to 0 reviews on companies. (So not a very active community). When you perform SEO for a local business you want the business to be found in the local search results. Google goes around the web to see if the business information (contact and address information, website etcetera) is consistent on different local listing directories. The links from the directories are still links and therefor they pass a certain amount of PageRank. How much value do you think local listing directories such as the links i will provide below will add to a business? Do you think it is worth the time to find these small directory sites and fill in information about the business there or is your time better spent on other SEO activities? I would love to hear your input on this subject Links http://dordrecht.cylex-bedrijvengids.nl/bedrijf/rietveld-doe-het-zelf-j-10800715.html

Citation building for service area businesses?
Hi Mozzers, Just recently came up with a situation where a business has a service area, but no address that would be displayed. Can you do citation building for a service area business like this, and if so, how? Would you just use the (otherwise hidden in Places) address? Thanks!

How do you get links from a photo pointing to a third party site in Google Places?
How do you get links from a photo pointing to a third party site. I’ve seen a number on other Places accounts but I can't figure out how to do it. They had a picture/logo and the url underneath it (instead of it saying 'from the owner' underneath it), when you clicked the photo it took you to the website instead of just a page with only that photo on it. Please see image as an example. I've highlighted the image links below. Thanks in advance for your help 🙂 i0HxK.jpg

Video Links under meta description
Has anyone seen Google adding links to the site's videos right under the meta description for the result? I tried finding more information on it and couldn't find any. Anyone here know how to get a video link displayed with your search result?

How to Determine the value of a Paid Legal Directory
I am considering paying for a listing on the legal directory on FindLaw.com, at a cost of $300 per month. This includes 5 deep links back to our site. I think the value of the listing and profile is next to 0 other than the SEO benefit to obtain a competitive position on the first page of the google map. But I am having a hard time ascertaining the SEO value. They have a page rank of 7 (at times 8 in the past). I have already done many of the other directories, dmoz, BOTW, yahoo! and have a regular blog on my site and lots of content. Will this contribute any noticeable SEO difference? Any thoughts? recommendations? If this will contribute a noticeable SEO difference, then imo it is definitely worth it.

Links from Google Books
Hi Interested in your views on this and any references to research on the subject Using Google Books recently I have discovered multiple citations of a web site I produced years ago in a whole load of publication. Really quite touching to find these 10 years afterwards I imagine that this must have a positive effect on search engine listings for this site. The site has really good listings still. Has any research or any announcement been made by Google about this. Pushing this a bit further ; An advertising hoarding has a web site address http:// ... would Google StreetView pick this up and could it be used as a signal too ? Neil PS No I don't sell adversing hoardings 😉
