Google Places, Google+ Local, or both?
-
I understand that Google is in the process of merging Google Places into Google+ Local, but the current state is very confusing. There are still two separate signup pages, and neither even MENTIONS the other.
If someone is establishing a business web presence today, what should we set up?
-
Actually they are one in the same, just different names and there are several different products and updates, so G makes it really confusing.
The business owner side is still branded Places. In fact all the NEW branding for business owners to sign up and the brand new dashboard that is still rolling out is all called "Places for Business".
It's the consumer facing page, where a customer would leave a review that was rebranded as Google+ Local.
Then there is the Local Google+ page which is a totally different animal and it does not show up in search unless merged with the Place page/AKA G+ Local page - once it's merged there is no name for that one. I did a long post explaining all this with a funny "WTF do you call these pages again?" image. So convoluted!
Google is sort of redoing branding or should I say doing away with all the past branding though for local and it appears she's heading toward one page name. Everything will just be called a Google+ page. Then it's just a matter of whether you verify or merge to add the social features. But then again she's getting rid of most of the links so consumers can't even get to the G+ L whatever you call it page now anyway, so...

Definitely Google+ Local. As places is being phased out you can bet your last dollar that G+ Local will be getting priority and preferential treatment, both in terms of updates and integration to the local listings in the SERPs.

Google Local landing pages
Just wondering what the best way to handle the landing page from a google plus local profile is. I had changed it to page that I created for the specific location with a citation with correct NAP, but realized that in OSE that my root domain lost almost all its G+'s. I'm torn and just looking for some advice. I've done quite a bit of work trying to correct citations, adding citations, and reading reading reading to learn more about Google Local but the results have been pretty rough.

Multiple Google Places Accounts - Same Physical Location
Hi there, One of my clients is a local law firm. I have created, populated and verified a Places page for them, but now I have discovered that they had previously created one for each of their attorneys at that location. According to Google's quality guidelines, this is totally fine. However, I am wondering if I should try to verify each of these accounts within Places to enhance their listing coverage? One thing I've already tried is modifying some of the listing details via Map Maker, but it would be nice to just make edits en masse, I think. Any suggestions?

Google Knowledge Graph - change bio image
I have a client who is a well known personality in a particular niche that I've done some general event and design work for, but he hasn't had interest in SEO or social help until this point. He is very displeased by the image that was chosen for his Google Knowledge Graph result when you search his name. The issue isn't due to a poor photo, but rather due to the site it links through to. Google has chosen to use a bio image for his Knowledge Graph result which links to an "anti-" site. This site is opposed to the organization he leads. If you click on the image, it sends you to an image result page backed by an article which is full of misinformation and overall negativity about this individual. The source is also listed under the image on the Knowledge Graph result, a source he doesn't believe deserves any publicity, especially in conjunction with his name. So, what best practices might you suggest should be employed to go about getting Google to choose a replacement image for his Knowledge Base bio? Optimize his own bio page and bio image on his website? Get an image on his Wikipedia page? Create a G+ page with the bio image? Integrate the rel author syntax into his articles pointing back to his bio page? He doesn't want this to become a public matter, so he's against posting the issue to Google's Help Boards or reporting it in a public fashion. I'm not sure what should be the best first steps and top priorities for him and am hoping the SEOmoz team is starting to see some trends with Knowledge Graph. Let me know your thoughts when you can. Thanks so much! iLqNW iLqNW.png

Google Place pages and regular listings in search results
I'm trying to clarify something about search results which contain local listings. Here is the search string for Google that will give you the same results that I am seeing - http://www.google.co.uk/search?&q=letting agents glasgow&pws=0 Of the results that are returned, some of them have data which seems to be related to their Google Place page but the "title" links directly to their website. What I wanted to know is, "Is it their actual website that has given them those rankings" or "Are they listed where they are because of a well optimized and ranked Places page?
