Google Place pages and regular listings in search results
-
I'm trying to clarify something about search results which contain local listings.
Here is the search string for Google that will give you the same results that I am seeing -
http://www.google.co.uk/search?&q=letting agents glasgow&pws=0
Of the results that are returned, some of them have data which seems to be related to their Google Place page but the "title" links directly to their website.
What I wanted to know is, "Is it their actual website that has given them those rankings" or "Are they listed where they are because of a well optimized and ranked Places page?

Again, many thanks for your answers and your time in looking at these results. I hadn't even noticed that the first listing hadn't actually claimed their place page (which does surprise me).
When you say that a company could achieve the same results by doing appropriate SEO on the local and organic level, I take it you mean SEO on the Places page and local targeted SEO on the main site?
Many thanks for your help and advice on this. I wanted to gather as much information regarding this area within the local search before committing to the client.
I have done a great deal of research about local search and SEO but was unsure of what was making Google actually rank these sites where they're ranking them.
Regards,
Michael

My opinion is that both have properly optimized websites, with the listing in the A position having the potential of strong backlinks and extremely well optimized site(although I have not done much analysis.)
Since the listing in the A position is rather far from the city center, and it has not even claimed the Googles Places listing, any optimization that has occurred locally would be from info Google has scraped from the web.
The listing in the B position has claimed/verified their Google Places page, but has done a poor job optimizing it. However, it does have a city center location.
I believe a company that wishes to compete in that market listing could do well if not better than the current top listings by doing appropriate SEO on the local and organic level.

Hi and thank you for your answer. From your experience, looking at the top two results, would you say they are most likely to be ranked where they are due to strong organic SEO of their site AND optimization of their places page?
I have a clients site which, due to way it is set up, cannot compete with the number one site from an organic SEO point of view but I could easily compete with its Places page.
Thanks,
Michael

Hi Michael,
Good question. There are a number of ways listings can show up ranging from organic only results, local only results(google 7 pack, and a mixed result of organic and local.
In your example, the organic/local mix is what we are seeing. In this case many optimization factors are taken into account that include local and organic factors.
A well optimized page + strong organic seo is what would be needed to give a company the best chance at ranking in a high position. This would include a verified and well optimized Google Places page.

How do I increase my client's Google Local listings?
Hi Guys, I have a hypothetical question for you. Let's say I live in a town that has two pizza places and in the maps section of a Google SERP the other place outranks my client when I type in "Pizza Place Smalltown NY." What would be a list of things that I could do to make "Pizza Place Smalltown, NY" rank better in that portion? Thanks!

Ranking top 3 with Geographical Keyword but not on 1st page without it.
Recently I have been working to solve an issue where we rank number 2 for "Web Design Memphis" yet we do not appear on the first few pages for the keyword "web design." Several of our local competitors appear on the first page without the geo keyword. What can be done to solve this issue? I am not searching incognito and Google is recognizing my locality. Why is the competition able to rank on the first page without the geo keyword and we are not? Thanks for your feedback!

Getting a Google Places listing verified on an automated phone system.
I've been having issues getting my Google Places/+ listing verified as we have an automatic phone system. If you call our office you have to dial a number to reach an actual human being or before you can leave a message. Whenever the Google Bot calls we aren't able to receive our Google Place verification code. Currently.. there is no option to send a postcard.. which is weird because for awhile that was the only option. Has anyone had any success on an automated phone system & how did you do it? Thanks!

Help - Google places,a service my competitor has used...
I was just doing a bit of detective work on a competitors website and noticed they had employed the services of an SEO company. Anyway, i went on this SEO companies website and discovered they offer a service called "Google places". Now I have an idea what google places is (my company is registered with it) but how are SEOs using Google places as a method for SEO? And how can I copy this service to do this for my own website?

Google Places Name Change - Duplicate Listings.
Need input on a Google Places change to avoid duplicate listing/phone number issue for a name change. Here is a summary: Company A has a Places listing and ranks week for key local terms. Company A has become a franchise and has a completely new name but same address. A New Franchise listing was created. It has same location but a different telephone (tracking) number. Both listings generally appear in Google Places but Company A (older listing) come up first. For branding purposes I would ideally like to eliminate (or edit) Company A listing and optimize new Franchise listing. We will need to eliminate the tracking phone number and add the old “Company A” phone number to the new Franchise listing. What is the best procedure to delete the Company A listing? I have access to both listings. Do I: -Strip Company A listing of most info…wait and then delete? Do I delete from my account or delete in total? -Just change the name of the “old” Company name to the new franchise name and delete the new franchise listing? An if so, in what order? -or do I just delete the old listing right away and edit the new franchise listing right away? -When do I add the old (and real phone number) to the new franchise listing? This same scenario has played out in other locations with disastrous results. Appears that Google looks at them as duplicate listings if the old Company name is still active and demotes both listings. Trying to avoid that problem that has been created by other companies. -Would adding Google Boost to the surviving listing help? Any input appreciated.

Rejected Yahoo! Local Listing Submissions
I'm working for a nationwide agency that has local agents scattered throughout the nation. I manually inputted each agent's listing and over half of them were rejected. I'm trying to find the common denominators among those that were approved and those that were rejected, but I can't find any. Does anyone know a way to get all of these locations approved?
