Publishing the same article content on Yahoo? Worth It? Penalties? Urgent
-
Hey All,
I am currently working for a company and they are publishing exactly the same content on their website and yahoo. In addition to this when I put the same article's title it gets outranked by Yahoo. Isn't against Google guidelines? I think Yahoo also gets more than us since they are on the first position. How do you think should the company stop this practice? Please need urgent responses for these questions.
Also look at the attachment and look at the snippets. We have a snippet (description) like the first paragraph but yahoo somehow scans the content and creates meta descriptions based on the search queries. How do they do That?

Thank you very much for your advices. Really helped me out here. I will message you sooner or later and tell you how it went, if you are interested. This week I will make a presentation for the team with the reports.
I think this should be addressed ASAP

I'd definitely make that point you made in bold.
If you're a paid contributor, it's a matter of does the income outweigh the drawbacks? It's pretty hard to put a tangible figure on that, but there are definite upsides and downsides. Arguably it adds to Moneywise's branding to be seen on Yahoo, but you can't track that. What you can track are clicks through to the site.
And of course it all depends on what the goal of Yahoo inclusion is. If it is just a money-spinner and a worthwhile one at that, don't even put the same content on your site. It's not worth running the risk of duplication penalties and/or link penalties, depending on how Google sees it.
If it is being done to raise brand awareness then (personally) I think it cannibalises your online visibility more than it promotes it - while still presenting SEO problems.
Outside looking in here, but I hope it helps. I'm with you - it's quite a predicament and a delicate situation, so I hope it works out for you. At the very least, my SEO advice can be seen as impartial and without an agenda, which may be useful to bring to a discussion among people with the company's interests, plus their teams'/

Thank you for your clear and descriptive response. I really appreciate it. The hardest thing in this case is to persuade the company that the costs outweigh the benefits. It seems that we are getting paid from Yahoo as contributors. I can outline the negative impacts on SEO, definitely will use your points. Need to think something about the returns in terms of potential revenues, also. How do you think?
Or I guess I should just point at that we are losing the overall position as a brand. And content duplication can be one of the main reasons why we are losing many positions.
Right now I will look at the reports. -
Hey there
I can't see any sense in doing this.
At the very least, it detracts clicks to your site, as it promotes Yahoo over your site. It may also look like to a reader that Moneywise is taking content from Yahoo (rather than the other way round), which cheapens the brand.
The worst case scenario would be that your site is seen as duplicating/stealing content - especially given at how poor Google is at identifying the original source for content. It could also think that you're duplicating content for the sole purpose of getting links, which again could lead to penalties.
To me, this doesn't make sense. I'd be much more inclined to keep the content on your own site - get people to come directly to you. You're getting comments on the articles so you already have a solid user base, clearly.
If your colleagues argue that the Yahoo copies of the content bring in new people to the site, pull up a Google Analytics report and look at how many people entered your site via Yahoo over the last 3 months. I can almost guarantee you that hardly anyone will be clicking those links in the article - those links by the way look pretty manipulative/commercial in terms of anchor text, which could prompt another penalty.
And in SEO terms, despite the link coming from Yahoo, if no one is linking or sharing that URL on Yahoo, I can tell you now that the link won't have much value to it.
In terms of your snippet question, it just looks like Yahoo are pulling the title and content from the page and generating a fresh meta description from there. Probably a time saving solution for a website of that size, but certainly not an ideal one. Your meta descriptions look much better.
Hope this helps.

Third part http links on the page source: Social engineering content warning from Google
Hi, We have received "Social engineering content" warning from Google and one of our important page and it's internal pages have been flagged as "Deceptive site ahead". We wonder what's the reason behind this as Google didn't point exactly to the specific part of the page which made us look so to the Google. We don't employ any such content on the page and the content is same for many months. As our site is WP hosted, we used a WordPress plugin for this page's layout which injected 2 http (non-https) links in our page code. We suspect if this is the reason behind this? Any ideas? Thanks

Advice needed! How to clear a website of a Wordpress Spam Link Injection Google penalty?
Hi Guys, I am currently working on website that has been penalised by Google for a spam link injection. The website was hacked and 17,000 hidden links were injected. All the links have been removed and the site has subsequently been redesigned and re-built. That was the easy part 🙂 The problems comes when I look on Webmaster. Google is showing 1000's of internal spam links to the homepage and other pages within the site. These pages do not actually exist as they were cleared along with all the other spam links. I do believe though this is causing problems with the websites rankings. Certain pages are not ranking on Google and the homepage keyword rankings are fluctuating massively. I have reviewed the website's external links and these are all fine. Does anyone have any experience of this and can provide any recommendations / advice for clearing the site from Google penalty? Thanks, Duncan

What tools do you use to find scraped content?
This hasn’t been an issue for our company so far, but I like to be proactive. What tools do you use to find sites that may have scraped your content? Looking forward to your suggestions. Vic

How do I make a content calendar to increase my rank for a key word?
I've watched more than a few seminars on having a content calendar. Now I'm curious as to what I would need to do to increase ranking for a specific keyword in local SEO. Let's say I wanted to help them increase their rank for used trucks in buffalo, NY. Would I regularly publish blog posts about used trucks? Thanks!

Am I Syndicating Content Correctly?
My question is about how to syndicate content correctly. Our site has professionally written content aimed toward our readers, not search engines. As a result, we have other related websites who are looking to syndicate our content. I have read the Google duplicate content guidelines (https://support.google.com/webmasters/answer/66359?hl=en), canonical recommendations (https://support.google.com/webmasters/answer/139066?hl=en&ref_topic=2371375), and no index recommendation (https://developers.google.com/webmasters/control-crawl-index/docs/robots_meta_tag) offered by Google, but am still a little confused about how to proceed. The pros in our opinion are as follows:#1 We can gain exposure to a new audience as well as help grow our brand #2 We figure its also a good way to help build up credible links and help our rankings in GoogleOur initial reaction is to have them use a "canonical link" to assign the content back to us, but also implement a "no index, follow" tag to help avoid duplicate content issues. Are we doing this correctly, or are we potentially in threat of violating some sort of Google Quality Guideline? Thanks!

Competitor is using a blog network - worth reporting?
Hey guys, Today I checked the backlink profile of a competitor who is #1 in Google Australia for a highly competitive keyword. To my surprise though, every single link (except a few directory link) seems to be from a private blog network. It's a business selling advertisment products, yet somehow seems to have links on blog from website that sell pc repair services, sleepwear, bali villas rentals, etc.. In this case, would filing a spam report in google WMT be beneficial? It's not like they advertise that they sell links (nor are the websites the links are on), but it is quite clear that something dodgy is going on. Thanks

Duplicate Articles
We submit articles to a magazine which either get posted as text or in a flash container. Management would like to post it to our site as well. I'm sure this has been asked a million times but is this a bad thing to do? Do I need to a rel=canonical tag to the articles? Most of the articles posted to that other site do not contain a link back to our site.

How to recover my site from -50 penalty
One of my sites was hit after Google confirmed its panda 3.2 update. The site ranked very well for many heavy traffic keywords in my niche. But all of a sudden, 80% of the keywords which ranked high in the previous dropped 50 in SERP. I know it is a -50 penalty , but i do not know how to recover from it. The link building campaign is almost the same as before and all of the articles are unique. BTW, i have two image ads on the sidebar and 7 affiliate links on the bottom of the page. Any input will be great appreciated !
