Local SEO issue
-
Hello,
I have a client that is located just outside of Baltimore, MD. Their zip code is 21236, which is seen as sometimes Nottingham and sometimes Overlea. Their competitors come up for Baltimore with the same zip. This client seems to be having some problems, and I think it is because of this geo confusion? Is this so, and if so, how can I make location more clear to Google?
Thanks

Hi Denise,
Robert has made some important points. Most importantly, it's vital to understand that Google considers any business as being most relevant to its city of location - not to neighboring cities, even if the company resides right on the border.
This is a frequent cause for frustration for business owners who are located just outside the borders of major cities, especially when many clients come to them from the major city, or when the business owner travels to the major city to serve.
Nevertheless, except in cases of low competition or a lack of data, most businesses should only expect to rank locally for their city of location. Additional rankings for nearby cities will typically have to be pursued with organic, rather than local, SEO.

First, with Local, there are many factors that must be considered and it helps to give us as much info as possible. When I search zip code 21236 in Google non personalized, I get "Nottingham" when I look at a zip map, parts of White Marsh fall into this zip as well.
As to confusion vs geo confusion, it is likely more that the local is not clean and that is causing the problem. I urge you to not look at competitors, but look at your citation sites, Bing, Yahoo, G+, etc. Make sure all are consistent. When we take on clients who were DIY prior they always try to throw in extra areas and they try to throw in plenty of categories - and they shoot themselves in the foot. What is your on page like - url structure, etc.?
To think you can plug in Baltimore and then get listed there is faulty. If my address were Nottingham, that is exactly what I would put. You can still have other pages that optimize for that geographic area you want to work your way into like Baltimore.
I hope that helps a bit.

Can you be more specific with what the problems are? Are they wanting to come up as a "Baltimore" location when searched, instead of Overlea or Nottingham? Or is it displaying incorrectly on their Google Places Page?

Great SEO Agency
Hi again all, I have appreciated all the help from the community as we are rebuilding our site. Currently we are looking for a great SEO consulting firm to help us with a number of key SEO related tasks and strategies. I have looked through the recommended list MOZ provides: http://moz.com/community/recommended, but I wanted to get everyone's take on who they thought was the "best" - on that list or otherwise. We are looking for an agency that can help us optimize the site, create an ongoing strategy, help with link building, help with sitemap creation and management (5 million + pages, primarily dynamic) and possibly help with content. Anyone have recommendations they could share? Thanks David

Choosing an SEO Company
Hi Guys, My first question for the forum. So here's my question, everyone in here has something to do with seo, but how would you choose an seo company. There are many a wild claim made by so many companies. Having done seo on our portfolio for about 6 years, however now I just dont have the time to spend. In my initial inquires I have asked for examples of their work and run a back link analysis to see the kind of links they have been building for their clients but so far all I have found is a load of directory links and no real innovation. I would be interested in your thoughts of how to sound out some companies. Thanks Alex

Question about local listings for traveling service
I have a band that performs all over my state and was wondering if i could add my business to google local listings in all the cities that my band performs in. How would i go about that being as there would be only one phone number and no local address? I'd love to get the traffic from the local listings that come up for certain search phrases. I wasn't sure if Google would look at that as spamming though. I do have contract musicians that play with us in each of those cities and could list their home address as the address just in case i have to have an address on the listing that is local. How do businesses that provide services in multiple cities by traveling to those cities usually list their businesses? any help would be much appreciated! Thanks in advance!

My company helps health care providers with internet and social strategy and solutions. At times, my clients need SEO services and I need a trusted and skilled pro to turn to who I can collaborate with on behalf of my clients. I may even be interested in putting together an SEO package for my clients if I can find the right person/agency to work with. Thanks for any help/advice you can offer.
