Domain authority - Low quality links
-
I have a question I hope people can help me on. it is my intention for my next project to focus on domain authority, and a small number of high quality links. I have a couple of scenarios I would appreciate some advice on:
1. Can lower quality links lower domain authority?
2. Would you avoid links from low quality sites no matter what \ what domain authority levels should you avoid links from.
3. Should I be looking at link profiles of the sites I get links from. Does it matter if a site I get a link from has 1000's of spammy links (i.e. something to look out for when doing guest blogging).
4. Should I avoid directories no matter what, or is high pr \ domain authority directories ok to use, if I end up on a page of other relevant directory submissions related to my niche.
Essentially, my aim is to have high quality links, but equally, there are some decent sites on the fringes that I will need to consider (based on a competitors link profile I researches).

I wouldn't obsess over DA/PA. People lose sight of the fact those are just Moz's metrics. They're an excellent resource to have, but take them with a grain of salt. If a website is a good resource for you that could potentially send referral traffic, but the DA/PA isn't where you want it to be, go for it anyway. We all know this, but ultimately, the purpose of online marketing is to increase traffic and conversions (traffic being secondary to conversions). If you're forgoing either one of those two for the sake of preserving your domain authority or link metrics, you're making a mistake.

Unless I'm mistaken, I think this guy was asking specifically about web directories like dmoz and botw.
There is a distinction between local directories and web directories—and the primary benefit of local citations has relatively little to do with links. The reason behind getting listed in either one is fairly distinct. Local has a lot more to do w/ establishing your address in the area + taking advantage of how sites like yp.com and Yelp take up a lot of space in SERPs.
-
A second question - low(er) quality, as in low DA/PA links from relevant sites - some things are pretty niche, and can be without many huge DA/PA relevant site links, if a site is one of a few, but still good, on that topic, but has low DA/PA, would it be ok to take in links?
-
It's not advisable to disregard directories across the board. Adding your site to a niche directory related to your subject matter can have the dual benefit of a link back as well as a source of some traffic. Whitespark has a terrific local citation finder tool that can get you suggestions on lots of relevant links for your site.

Yeh, I think a focus on good quality content is something I am going to have to work on as well. Thanks.

That is very helpful, thanks.

Keep in mind that domain authority is Moz's metric. It's intended to predict how well your site might perform in search results. You might be able to rank just fine without a high DA.
To answer your questions as they are numbered:
1. It's possible. Low quality links are probably low quality because they lack relevancy and are low on trust.
2. Not necessarily. A natural link profile will have all kinds of links: some good ones, some decent ones, and some not so great ones. But at the same time, I wouldn't actively pursue low quality links. I just don't panic if a scraper links to me and start tearing my hair out over my domain authority.
3. Perhaps. Avoiding websites in "bad neighborhoods" is generally recommended. At the same time, you could probably spend your hours more effectively than reviewing everyone's link profiles.
4. I wouldn't avoid directories "no matter what." I wouldn't avoid anything "no matter what." Consider what the benefits are against the risks and go from there. With any directory, consider if it looks like a resource people would actually use. If it's just there for links, don't bother with it.
Just think for yourself with these things. Don't fall in love with bumping up metrics.

When I began SEO for my sites, I spent a lot of time addressing the very questions you posted regarding links and directories and the like. I know more now than I did then and in hindsight, I think I am more productive now focusing on great content for my sites and less time focused on back links. For those who used black hat link building or purchased a domain with a bad link profile, sure, they need to devote time to cleaning that up, but if your link profile is natural, I would not spend too much time on this or that link from a low quality site and spend more time creating excellent content. I know it's often repeated on this and other SEO forums, but if you read the comments / suggestions / experiences on this forum of the SEO experts, it's pretty clear they spend the bulk of their time creating content and an awesome user experience for those who visit their sites. When you have an awesome site, the links will come naturally.
Best,
Christopher

Domain change after over optimisation
Hi Guys, Wanted to get some second opinions. I have a client who worked with someone on their SEO for about 15months, during which time they reaped the benefits of being top of Googles organic rankings for their main keyword. Unfortunately, the link building that was completed was terrible with no care taken for future updates, over optimised anchor text links on totally irrelevant websites. Contacting webmasters in order for links to be taken down was an impossible task, these websites were pure spam sites which I doubt anyone oversees with any care. So went the disavow route, it caused a slight increase, but the way Google indexes the website and its pages is still all over the place. We have a good new content marketing plan in place for the next 12 months, and already have some great in depth articles, videos and interactive infographics created, but the problem is my client really needs some quick wins and cannot risk the domain never recovering fully from the issues. They own the .com version of the .co.uk they have so my thoughts at this point are to move them to the .com, and the new content strategy can be worked on as if its a new project. For the keywords they target there are sites on the 1st and 2nd page with DA of 16-18, so it wont take long with the new content we have to get them back to a level playing field with the competition. The one worry I do have is Google seeing the .co.uk go down, and the .com appear with the same website on and looking down on the "start from scratch" method.... does anyone know of any examples when they have acted on this? We started an AdWords account (very small spend) and this has been going to the .co.uk, if we start a new one, with same billing info going to the .com could that also cause problems? So basically, because of my clients situation, and the level the competition is it, moving to the .com seems like the best move, its just whether there is any risk involved. I've never read of there being any, but thought I'd get some opinions before comitting to it. By the way, I'm only seeing this as a feasible option as they can still keep branded traffic due to buying both domains at the same time. Thanks in advance.

Buying a domain vs. renting a domain
I am considering buying and redirecting a domain that has a pretty strong, relevant link profile. However, it's very expensive. There is another option to rent the domain on a month-to-month basis. I am interested in doing this for at least a month just to see what SEO benefits are to be had and if it would ultimately be worth buying or not. Can renting a domain have any negative impacts on my primary site? Would the search engines know if I did this? Is there any harm in having those redirects appear and then disappear?

Still Battling On With Link Profile Audit
I'm getting there, I can see the light! 🙂 I have covered one complete audit of the link profile and I am now going back over it looking at the links I had 'question marked' - I should have this completed by the end of this week and I will then focus on using DISAVOW for the links that I am really struggling with, the foreign sites that are in Chinese or Russian, the sites that have absolutely no 'contact us' information and have been privately registered (in WhoIs) I have come across this domain which links to our site about 8 times and although I cannot find any contact info I can't quite make my mind up, to be honest I would rather get rid of it BUT I'm trying to avoid taking the easy option of disavowing where I can; http://www.askives.com/ Fo anyone who has gone through what I am currently going through, please help me just this once and tell me 'should it stay or should it go'?! 🙂 Many thanks! Internal Link Structure
Hello Everyone, I'd be grateful for a little feedback please; This is my site, the home page
White Hat / Black Hat SEO | | TwoPints
of which is targeting the phrase jobs in **** (I'm sure you can fill i the gap
:)) I've made a few changes recently which has included having the
Contract jobs in **** | Permanent Jobs in **** | Temporary Jobs in **** & Today’s
jobs in **** links added to the homepage... Perhaps foolishly and impatiently, I did all of these at the
same time, whilst also changing the sites internal link structure, specifically
for all links to the homepage, which previously were like <a<br>href="/">Home and have now been changed to <a<br>href="/">jobs in ****</a<br></a<br> Meaning that I have 4500 internal links with the anchor text
'jobs in ****' But rather than seeing an improvement n my SERPs ranking, I have
gone from page 2 of Google to page 6, and falling...... Apart from being inpatient, what have I done wrong? Many thanks0 -
Are unusual chinese links likely to be black hat?
Hello, I noticed that this onepage website: http://www.clearpixel.net/ ranks at #11 for web design London so I did some research using SEO Moz Pro. Turns out that alll their links are from Chinese directory style sites. Does this demonstrate black hat SEO? If not, how do I go about getting links on Chinese sites with .gov urls. Many thanks, Martin Hofschroer
