Anyone seen REAL proof that White Hat & Social Signals leads to rankings ?

Trying to be a good, clean SEO, I have been spending the last two and a half years focusing a lot on building up solid social communities on Twitter, Facebook, Google Plus, Pinterest and YouTube.
Back when I began doing this, I believed that old school link-building was on its way out, and that, to stay on the 'clean', White Hat side of Google, social was the way to go for future success in organic search.
But my main competitor is STILL buying links left and right, and has absolutely no social media following...and he's kicking my butt more and more in the rankings. And I seem to be losing out with my strategy.
So I would really like to know: have any of you experienced proof, first hand, that you can win with SEO by focusing on social signals, and by letting NATURAL, earned links pretty much take care of themselves, by trying to create good content?
Because I am FRUSTRATED.
I thought I was being one of the good guys. I thought I was going the safer, risk-free way to success. And I knew it would take me longer to become successful this way...but it's been YEARS now, and I still don't see any signs of it happening any time soon !

Of course we've seen results from whitehat SEO. That's not to say that blackhat SEO doesn't work, too. Afterall, who would take such a risk if it didn't work...but it is a big risk. Many sites using blackhat techniques wake up one morning to find their site's rankings are in the toilet or worse.
The rest of the advice that's been offered is good. Create truly good content that's valuable or entertaining and build up your audience. Whitehat SEO does work; however, Whitehat SEO with unoriginal, boring content, doesn't work so well. And like SEO 5 Team said, if you know your competition is violating the guidelines, report them. Beyond just the small business reporting, you can actually submit a spam report:

Agree with EGOL in regards paying attention to your content first and foremost.
That being said, you might want to have a quick look at the 2013 ranking survey here: http://moz.com/blog/ranking-factors-2013. Still a lot of factors in play of which social is only one.

You may want to exercise the option of reporting your site to Google so they can take a closer look at the search results associated with your site.

I have not seen proof that Social Signals alone will lead to rankings. I agree with EGOL - you should focus your attention on the quality of the content, and possibly more white-hat link building, rather than going ALL-IN on social.

So... are you working hard to improve and increase the content offerings of your website or are you spending all of your time trying to build a fire on social media?
If I want my website to take off I spend my time working on content to build a fire there... and if I am doing a great job of that the people who visit the website spread the word about my content on social media with zero work from me. If that isn't happening then maybe the content is less than inspiring or the topics are chest-thumping promos that nobody cares about.

What is the value of having a social media feed displayed on your website?
This is something I asked myself this evening. You see a lot of sites with a Facebook or Twitter feed displayed, but I struggle to understand their value. OK, it shows that you are active on this or that social media channel, but unless you are posting great content consistently on the social media displayed, the impact of your feed could detract from the web page it is displayed on. It could also cause a visitor to that page on your site to click away from your site into the noise and distraction of that social media channel. I don't have an issue with using social media icons to link to your channels, but they are more discreet and the sort of thing people will look for if they are interested enough in your web pages to want to connect with you. Also, social sharing icons are good, but I do not see the value in social media feeds. Do you agree or disagree? I am more than will to be persuaded otherwise. Thanks in advance,

Does anyone know how engagement is defined/calculated in FollowerWonk?
In a comparison of Twitter accounts, FollowerWonk shows something called Engagement % Rate. I've looked but I cannot find any information about how this score is calculated or what it is based on. Does anyone know?

Deleting Poor Performing Social Media Accounts for Businesses?
I'm the Internet Marketing Manager for an ad agency and in charge of not only our social media and SEO but advising and hooking up clients with successful campaigns. I've taken the liberty of signing us up for almost every major social media account. Some are very successful (Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, Instagram, LinkedIn, Vimeo is ok (we use it over YouTube), Vine is picking up) and others are very not doing well (Flickr, Foursquare, YouTube really is low, Google+ is very mediocre). I’ve been wondering if it would be more beneficial to just delete certain accounts. I think I need to keep Google+ (Google values it and we are not doing terribly on it) but all the others listed in the bad column I think are really cancerous to our SEO (and make us look bad b/c we are doing poorly on them) but I really don’t know. I used them kind of to see if they would work for us and to demonstrate that we knew what we were doing in these social networks, but I think they may be doing us more harm than good both from a PR standpoint and SEO. Doesn't it hurt your website for Google to see poor performing social media accounts, just as the opposite would be true (good sm accounts and mention/activity would give you klout & SEO...)? What do you think? I'm no novice but no master either. Love this forum. Thanks in advance.

What is the best Practice for Adding Social Buttons to your Sites from SEO Perspective?
Hey Guys, As you all know there are many social buttons out there that can be added to your website. Facebook Like button, Twitter's Tweet and Follow buttons, Google +1, and AddThis buttons are just a few to mention. All of these buttons can be customized, eg. you may choose to point your FB Like button to your homepage, to a specific inner page, or to your Facebook Brand Page. Same with your +1 button. Moreover, you may choose to add Twitter and Google+ Follow buttons to your site's pages, and so on. My questions are very simple: Is there any best practice for adding social buttons to your site from SEO perspective? if yes, Which social buttons to add? Increasding the number of Tweets & FB Shares
Just asking for advice / strategy on increasing the number of tweets & Facebook shares to a particular domain. We're seriously lacking in this department and I'm not exactly sure how to get started as we're a B2B services company. We're languishing on page 2 of Google where all the other stats look good enough for us to be in the top 5, tweets and FB shares are 1 and 1 respectively.
