Keywords under product listing pages
-
Hi guys,
One of my main concerns when we start redesigning the site Trespass.co.uk, is the current pages like this one http://www.trespass.co.uk/snow-sports/clothing/ski-jackets/womens-ski-jackets are bordering over optimisation.
Is this the case as each product listed in the url above has "womens ski jacket" under each product. If we have 50 products on each product listing page with the product name + type of product, ie. flora womens ski jacket, xyz mens waterproof jacket.
Are we over optimising the page for the main keywords by having them under each product?
Would that page be over optimised for womens ski jackets?
Thanks guys

"If it aint broke...." Hard to argue against that! I'd test removing it on a category though... I'm like that
I'm off to do some window shopping then.

H Mat,
I'm gonna leave it alone and keep the current format as it works well. Guess I'll have to wait and see what updates Google has in store and cross that bridge when it happens.
I agree that the on page tools aren't exactly accurate. In fact I once questioned this and got no response. I think over optimisation for a page targeting 1 specicific keyword is easy to do if you follow everything in the on page report.
Still loving moz though
Haha are you a fan of trespass then? You should check out Nevisport.com which is also owned by trespass. Big brands at great prices.
Kind regards
Robert

I think you are very right to look ahead. That is why I try to look at things in terms of "does this add value / make sense if search was out of the equation". I can't see that the text you point out currently does.
I suspect that your existing rankings for that term are down to a lot more than the repetition of that phrase on page. Let's face it, Trespass gives off pretty convincing brand signals*. However it would be pretty easy to test the removal of that label on a couple of less critical categories to see if there was any impact before making any site-wide decisions.
Uhm, how to say this here... I'm not overly convinced by the Moz on page / on-site tools (Ready for a barrage of thumbs down for criticising he holy Moz). I think they are a little dated in places and can put undue emphasis on some minor issues whilst overlooking bigger ones. They're a really good starting point for smaller sites, those new to the web and those in less competitive niches. I do though think that they have quite limited use for a site like Trespass. Just add a pinch of salt to everything and that'll probably be about right.
*Google secretly uses the number of times a business appears on my credit card bill as a brand indicator

Hi Mat,
The current site is actually custom e-commerce which will soon be redesigned and built on Magento enterprise.
The site has great rankings already for the phrase "women's ski jackets" ranks number 2. My concern is future updates and whether Google will see it as over optimisation for "womens ski jacket"
The text below each product will be pulled from the title of the product field. ie. Flora womens ski jacket.
I'll check what the on page report ays from moz and take it from there. Just wanted to get some feedback and decide how the product listing pages should display product name and category.
Thanks for your reply.

I've always been nervous about this on e-commerce sites. I personally believe that it can be enough to tip the balance in to being seen as manipulative, although my experience is that by itself it isn't a problem. The issue there is you never know what else is already counting against you.
It could be argued that such labels are useful to the user. If that was a "Ski outerwear" category or similar then having labels such as "Women's ski jacket" would be good clarification. Pushing the boundary a little you could even argue the case if it were just "Ski Jackets". However it adds nothing for the user to have it when they are all the same.
Considering that keyword stuffing doesn't work any more the possible benefits of doing this then would seem to be close to zero. The potential for triggering an alarm in a dark corner of Google is there though. Weighing it up I would drop them when they match the category.
A smart approach might be to replace the "women's ski jacket" label with another useful piece of info when they all just match the category name. Hard to see what common fields you do have available. Sizes would be useful, outer material (in the case of jackets) - not sure how easy it would be to change that based on category. Looks like Magento.

Pagination on a product page with reviews spread out on multiple pages
Our current product pages markup only have the canonical URL on the first page (each page loads more user reviews). Since we don't want to increase load times, we don't currently have a canonical view all product page. Do we need to mark up each subsequent page with its own canonical URL? My understanding was that canonical and rel next prev tags are independent of each other. So that if we mark up the middle pages with a paginated URL, e.g: Product page #1http://www.example.co.uk/Product.aspx?p=2692"/>http://www.example.co.uk/Product.aspx?p=2692&pageid=2" />**Product page #2 **http://www.example.co.uk/Product.aspx?p=2692&pageid=2"/>http://www.example.co.uk/Product.aspx?p=2692" />http://www.example.co.uk/Product.aspx?p=2692&pageid=3" />Would mean that each canonical page would suggest to google another piece of unique content, which this obviously isn't. Is the PREV NEXT able to "override" the canonical and explain to Googlebot that its part of a series? Wouldn't the canonical then be redundant? Thanks

Should my back links go to home page or internal pages
Right now we rank on page 2 for many KWs, so should i now focus my attention on getting links to my home page to build domain authority or continue to direct links to the internal pages for specific KWs? I am about to write some articles for several good ranking sites and want to know whether to link my company name (same as domain name) or KW to the home page or use individual KWs to the internal pages - I am only allowed one link per article to my site. Thanks Ash

Page Count in Webmaster Tools Index Status Versus Page Count in Webmaster Tools Sitemap
Greeting MOZ Community: I run www.nyc-officespace-leader.com, a real estate website in New York City. The page count in Google Webmaster Tools Index status for our site is 850. The page count in our Webmaster Tools Sitemap is 637. Why is there a discrepancy between the two? What does the Google Webmaster Tools Index represent? If we filed a removal request for pages we did not want indexed, will these pages still show in the Google Webmaster Tools page count despite the fact that they no longer display in search results? The number of pages displayed in our Google Webmaster Tools Index remains at about 850 despite the removal request. Before a site upgrade in June the number of URLs in the Google Webmaster Tools Index and Google Webmaster Site Map were almost the same. I am concerned that page bloat has something to do with a recent drop in ranking. Thanks everyone!! Alan

Should we show(to google) different city pages on our website which look like home page as one page or different? If yes then how?
On our website, we show events from different cities. We have made different URL's for each city like www.townscript.com/mumbai, www.townscript.com/delhi. But the page of all the cities looks similar, only the events change on those different city pages. Even our home URL www.townscript.com, shows the visitor the city which he visited last time on our website(initially we show everyone Mumbai, visitor needs to choose his city then) For every page visit, we save the last visited page of a particular IP address and next time when he visits our website www.townscript.com, we show him that city only which he visited last time. Now, we feel as the content of home page, and city pages is similar. Should we show these pages as one page i.e. Townscript.com to Google? Can we do that by rel="canonical" ? Please help me! As I think all of these pages are competing with each other.

Should We Add the W3.org Language Tag To Every Page Or Just The Home Page?
Greetings, We have five international sites around the world, two of which are in difference languages. Currently we have the following line of html code on the home page of each of the sites: Clearly, we need to change the "en" portion for the sites that aren't in English, but, should we include that meta tag in each of the site's pages, or will the home page suffice. Thanks!

Is it ok to add snippet of information taken from other sites on product pages?
Hello here, I own an e-commerce website that sells digital sheet music, and I would like to enrich my product pages with short references to artists/composers related to the product, taken from external websites such as mentions, fresh news, information taken from related videos, cross-references, etc. In other words, I'd like to provide our users with a different kind of informational content that our competitors are currently not offering. We could also think of this like "providing some sort of aggregate content on product pages to enrich the user's experience by providing more information about the product". What do you think are the risks or the benefits of such an approach? And if there are any risks, how to avoid/tackle them? Any thoughts are very welcome! Thank you in advance to anyone.

Parent pages
Hi guys, A website has many venue pages, for example: www.example.com/venue/paris For some reason the parent www.example.com/venue/ is 301 redirecting to a minor page elsewhere on the website. Should I remove the 301 redirect and then create www.example.com/venue/ page that then links to all the venues? My thinking is: Google will expect there to be a /venue/ 'parent' page So if the parent page is redirecting to a minor page elsewhere within the website its telling Google all the venues like paris must be even less important. Should I do it? Any suggestions from fellow SEOMoz's would be appreciated! All the best Richard

Dynamic pages - ecommerce product pages
Hi guys, Before I dive into my question, let me give you some background.. I manage an ecommerce site and we're got thousands of product pages. The pages contain dynamic blocks and information in these blocks are fed by another system. So in a nutshell, our product team enters the data in a software and boom, the information is generated in these page blocks. But that's not all, these pages then redirect to a duplicate version with a custom URL. This is cached and this is what the end user sees. This was done to speed up load, rather than the system generate a dynamic page on the fly, the cache page is loaded and the user sees it super fast. Another benefit happened as well, after going live with the cached pages, they started getting indexed and ranking in Google. The problem is that, the redirect to the duplicate cached page isn't a permanent one, it's a meta refresh, a 302 that happens in a second. So yeah, I've got 302s kicking about. The development team can set up 301 but then there won't be any caching, pages will just load dynamically. Google records pages that are cached but does it cache a dynamic page though? Without a cached page, I'm wondering if I would drop in traffic. The view source might just show a list of dynamic blocks, no content! How would you tackle this? I've already setup canonical tags on the cached pages but removing cache.. Thanks
