Images in articles - copying the authority in my industry
-
Hello,
For my site, BobWeikel.com, I have an article about the type of coaching I do. It's called "What is NLP?" Here's the link.
The two authorities in my industry which I respect the most have no (or sometimes one) images or anything in their best articles - it's all just text.
Some examples of these authoritative articles are here and here. Note the second article has one image in it. That's common for that author, and he's the top person in the field. Note that that first link has no images at all.
I'd like to refine my article until I can compete. Should I leave out all images since that's what the big guys are doing?
Thanks!

Awesome advice from both of you. Thanks!

Bob,
I don't think that mimicking your competitors is a good strategy for winning. Instead you should be doing something that is superior. Keep that in mind.
The value of images on a webpage varies depending upon the subject. If I am talking about how to install crown molding then images of how it is done are extremely valuable to my article. They might even be more important than text. So, if these guys are writing about topics for which images can play a critical role then they should have their heads examined if they are not using lots of images.
Lots of other topics might not lend themselves to an article with a lot of images. However, images can be used for other things. They can be used to reinforce points, pretty up a page (which is important in my opinion - landing on an article with no images is horrible for engagement in my opinon).
We take a lot of our own photos, we license a lot of photos, and we use websites like istockphoto to obtain access to a library of photos that can be licensed for minimal cost.
So, I would use photos and art and tables and graphs no matter what I am writing about. I think that it makes for a classy website and those photos can be used as primary, secondary or "did you know?" content.
In short, I pay very little attention to my competitors, other than to take a quick look at their content and decide if I can beat it. For me images are a major way for me to beat my competitors in richness of content and aesthetic appeal

Hey Bob,
Although it is good to keep an eye on Authorities in your field, I would suggest you be your own person and not worry too much about them not using images.
At the end of the day. research shows images are a great way of keeping people engaged on your page. I would always use images to illustrate a point if I can.
Hope this helps
Dave

Would a lot of images on one post be categorized as thin content?
As an example, if i write an article on 12 best print ads by BMW, it will have 12 images and possible 12 single liners and a paragraph. The images will have the necessary alt tags. But overall, will this post be counted as low content and is there changes of being penalized by google for it?

Images & Duplicate Content Issues
Here's a scenario for you: The site is running WordPress and the images are uploaded to the media section. You can set image attributes there such as the Description & Alt Tag. Let's say you'd like to reuse the same image in two different blog posts. The image keeps the same Description & Alt Tag associated with it in the media section. Would this be considered duplicate content? What would be the best practice in this case to reuse the same image in multiple posts?

Wordpress Old Articles date - Update or Not
Hey there! Been reading around and I believe that there isn't a perfect answer to this question, but I surely want to know your opinion. It's a fact that google likes new content but also updated content, so whats your position concerning the wordpress articles. Meaning, when I decide to update articles from 2011 on its content, should I also update the date? If I make a search and an article from 2011 will be shown, its unlikely that I will click on it... So that you can understand my point.

How to Get Rid of Duplicate Content Captured on Article Lists
We have a ton of articles and blog posts on our site. Currently, we display summary lists of articles that contain the first paragraph of the article in the summary list. However, in my reports, this is coming back as duplicate content with the full article itself. How do I fix this? Ex: article main page- http://www.robots.com/articles/10 First article on that page- http://www.robots.com/articles/viewing/grippers-for-robots (which shows up as duplicate content with the main artilce page). With our blogs, we have the most recent 5 blogs (in the same summary format) listed on our main blog page. We then have categories that people can sort by. But again, this is causing us duplicate content because those pages show the first paragraph of the blogs related to that category. Ex: blog main page- http://www.robots.com/blog. First blog listed on that page- http://www.robots.com/blog/viewing/robots-and-automation-bringing-jobs-back-to-the-united-states (which then shows as duplicate content with the main blog page). And then you can also select categories to see related topics: http://www.robots.com/blog/category/buying-a-robot which is showing as duplicate content also. Help! How can I prevent this? Thanks! Im currently working with a new client and their goal is to create the absolute best content in their industry. I've seen alot of articles on WHY to create the best content but not a lot on HOW to create the best content. Can anyone recommend a article they recall which talked more about the HOW. I'm looking for a process on how to create awesome content, how to go about it. Any suggestions?

Author Rank for news portals
Hello SEOmoz community 🙂 I would like to discuss the option of implementing AuthorRank on news portals where content changes daily and the importance and the ''weight'' of that content is measuerd mostly on the breaking news factor. Content changes multiple times through out the day and there are many authors / journalists who write for that portal, so my questions would be: can AuthorRank have impact on this kind of site? Did any of you have any experiences with AuthorRank on a big scale sites like news portals and if you would be kind to share some insights. Thank you in advance! sincerely, sinisa

Issues with copying online forum reviews on own website
Apologies- I asked a similar question the other day but did not word it as clearly as possible. We are looking at having a text box of 'What customers say' on our product pages using reviews written about us online (to remain factual) and wanted to know if this created any issues relating to search engines finding matching content on two separate websites? Will this have any SEO implications as effectively we are 'plagiarising' the content in the eyes of the bots even though it is just customer opinion of our own products right? Thanks in advance.

Can free article sites damage my reputation
Hi i have been submitting a lot of fresh articles on free article sites and they have been picked up which is good but my problem is, i am finding loads of these sites who have picked up my article using some sort of article rewrite programme and my articles look like they have now been written by a two year old. I want to know if this is going to spoil my reputation and i would like to know why people use these programmes when they do not even make sense.
