Local Results For Additional Service Categories

Hi Mozzers,
My client is prominent in local search for their primary activity, but I would also like them to appear for other service categories they offer. Assuming I add these other service categories in +Local and build corresponding service pages on the site, will this be enough to cause them to appear for these other services?
The additional pre set service categories offered in +Local don't match those offered in local citations, so I can't really support these that way.

Thanks Miriam. I understand that all of this is dependant on the amount of competition, domain authority, and links to specific pages, as it is with any page. The is and does stuff I think falls under the category of including as many variations of the related phrase as possible, which I also try to do with any page.

Thanks so much for the clarification! I would put it this way - the primary category chosen will be the one your client has the best chances of ranking for, and this will typically also be the main, or one of the main, terms the website is optimized for. Carefully choosing your secondary categories is also very important, and building out content on the website that matches these terms is a very good, strong step. However, whether this alone will enable the client to rank will be completely dependent on how competitive the client's unique market is. If he has few competitors for these other terms, this could be enough, but if the competition is tougher, you may have to go the extra mile to start seeing results. The extra mile might include earning links to these pages, social efforts, video marketing, etc.
I do want to clarify that none of Google's pre-set categories reflect services, however. All of them reflect what a business is (dentist), not what it does (root canals), so it's important to keep that in mind.
So, I think you have a very good initial plan: carefully choose the 9 other, non-primary categories and build out content for them. See where this gets the client. You might find he's now ranking for a few of the categories, but that for others, additional efforts will need to be made. Hope this helps!

Since the service categories I'm using are chosen from pre-sets in the new dashboard, these are what Google thinks my client is.
If the other categories are closely linked and are also services they offer and are highly relevant, what would I risk in adding them? We're only taking about 5 additional categories and pages. Isn't this simply a common sense way to inform Google about the complete range of services the customer offers?

All my questions are about local pack results. I'm quite familiar with organic.
1. Yes, local pack, not organic. Ranking well for primary keyword, which is also a Google pre-set category in new dashboard.
2. Yes, they want local pack results for other keywords.
3. Exist in pre-set categories in the new dashboard
4. Yes, they exist for Google's pre-set categories, but don't have really equivalents from places where I can build citations.
If I build out the services category pages on site to match Google pre-set categories, will this be enough to cause them to appear in local pack results?

Your client is ranking well in the Local pack of results for their primary keyword (i.e. landscaper san francisco) or are you talking about the organic results?

The client wants to get Local pack results for other keywords (i.e. fence builder san francisco) or are you talking about organic results?

These other keywords exist in Google's pre-set categories in the new dashboard or are you talking about the old Places dashboard custom categories?

These keywords exist in Google's pre-set categories but you're finding that they don't exist on other sites like YP.com, Best of the Web, HotFrog, etc., where you are building citations?

Short answer: Probably not.
Long Answer: Google wants you to use to use your service categories to describe what you ARE rather than what you DO. In other words, you ARE a Bakery. Customized birthday cakes is something you DO.
So if you want to go down this path of creating custom categories and corresponding landing pages, you can and you may even achieve short term results, but I would not recommend. That's just too much work and risk in my opinion.I would stick with trying to achieve local results for the opportunities that exist in your 'core' category and try to obtain organic serps in the service categories.

Indexation of internal search results from infinite scroll
Hello, I have an issue where we will have a website set up with dynamic (AJAX) result pages based on the selection of certain filters chosen by the user. The result page will have 12 results shown and if the user scrolls down, the page will lazy load (infinite scroll) additional results. So for example, with these filters: Filter A: Size Filter B: Color Filter 😄 Location We could potentially have a page for "Large, Blue, New York" results dynamically generated. My issue is that I want Google to potentially crawl and index all these variations, so that I can have a page that ranks for "Large Blue New York", another page that ranks for "Small Orange Miami" etc. However, I do not need all the products indexed--- just the page with the first set of dynamic results would be enough since the additional products would just be more of the same. In other words, I am trying to get these pages with filters applied indexed and not necessarily get every possible product indexed. Can anyone comment on the best way to Get Google to index all dynamic variations? The proper way of paginating pages? Thank you

Google Is Indexing My Internal Search Results - What should i do?
Hello, We are using a CMS/E-Commerce platform which isn't really built with SEO in mind, this has led us to the following problem.... a large number of internal (product search) search result pages, which aren't "search engine friendly" or "user friendly", are being indexed by google and are driving traffic to the site, generating our client revenue. We want to remove these pages and stop them from being indexed, replacing them with static category pages - essentially moving the traffic from the search results to static pages. We feel this is necessary as our current situation is a short-term (accidental) win and later down the line as more pages become indexed we don't want to incur a penalty . We're hesitant to do a blanket de-indexation of all ?search results pages because we would lose revenue and traffic in the short term, while trying to improve the rankings of our optimised static pages. The idea is to really move up our static pages in Google's index, and when their performance is strong enough, to de-index all of the internal search results pages. Our main focus is to improve user experience and not have customers enter the site through unexpected pages. All thoughts or recommendations are welcome. Thanks

Outranking a definition result
Hello, I was just asked to help rank a keyword that has fairly low competition but the #1 result is a definition.

I do not want to post the keyword here but for an example type in "resting" and you will see that Google returns a definition of the word. Now, lets say the result directly below the webster definition is a company with the name "Resting". What type of tactics would you employ to outrank a definition?! My first guess would be that I should establish this brand with Google by creating a Google Places listing for it. What else could I possible do? Should I just build standard relevant back links and optimize the content as normal? Thanks in advance!0 -
HTTPS sitewide move has resulted in huge rankings drop...
Hi all, An e-commerce site has recently moved protocol to https sitewide. The site ranked page one for some great terms and now appear to be page 2 or below. Brand terms seem unphased and are still very strong, on both Google and Bing. The following has been done; Everything 301'd from http to https Sitemap Edited Updated Webmaster Tools Robots.txt edited Crawled and Fetched all pages daily. Checked Paged are all follow,index. PPC Ads mass updated to new url's. Most terms were ranked 1 - 9 on Bing, and Page 1/2 on Google. HTTPS upgrade was done less than one week ago. The site is not payday loan related, nor was it hit by latest panda escapades. Everything on the site is relevant to the content. Has anybody else been in this position, what else can be done? Category Pages For Distributing Authority But Not Creating Duplicate Content
I read this interesting moz guide: http://moz.com/learn/seo/robotstxt, which I think answered my question but I just want to make sure. I take it to mean that if I have category pages with nothing but duplicate content (lists of other pages (h1 title/on-page description and links to same) and that I still want the category pages to distribute their link authority to the individual pages, then I should leave the category pages in the site map and meta noindex them, rather than robots.txt them. Is that correct? Again, don't want the category pages to index or have a duplicate content issue, but do want the category pages to be crawled enough to distribute their link authority to individual pages. Given the scope of the site (thousands of pages and hundreds of categories), I just want to make sure I have that right. Up until my recent efforts on this, some of the category pages have been robot.txt'd out and still in the site map, while others (with different url structure) have been in the sitemap, but not robots.txt'd out. Customer Experience vs Search Result Optimisation
Yes, I know customer experience is king, however, I have a dilema, my site has been live since June 2013 & we get good feedback on site design & easy to follow navigation, however, our rankings arent as good as they could be? For example, the following 2 pages share v similar URLs, but the pages do 2 different jobs & when you get to the site that is easy to see, but my largest Keyword "Over 50 Life Insurance" becomes difficult to target as google sees both pages and splits the results, so I think i must be losing ranking positions? http://www.over50choices.co.uk/Funeral-Planning/Over-50-Life-Insurance.aspx http://www.over50choices.co.uk/Funeral-Planning/Over-50-Life-Insurance/Compare-Over-50s-Life-Insurance.aspx The first page explains the product(s) and the 2nd is the Quote & Compare page, which generates the income. I am currently playing with meta tags, but as yet havent found the right combination! Originally the 2nd page meta tags were focussing on "compare over 50s life insurance" but google still sees "over 50 life insurance" in this phrase, so the results get split. I also had internal anchor text supporting this. What do you think is the best strategy for optimising both pages? Thanks Ash

Local SEO for Pregnancy Centers?
So, the thing is, we don't want these websites associated with anything pro-life or Christian. So, we can't list them in those directories. And we can't list them in abortion provider directories because they don't do abortions. The organizaitons are Christian, pro-life -- but the target audience is the complete opposite. How can I effectively market their services without crossing any boundaries?

Separate Email for Separate G+Local Listing?
Client decided to keep restaurant and catering businesses completely separate, so he's gotten a suite number and a separate landline. He already set up and claimed the restaurant G+Local/Places page using his personal gmail address. I need to set up the catering G+Local page, but of course he's not crazy about giving me the login to his personal gmail account. But maybe, since they're completely separate businesses, I really should go set up hiscateringbusiness@gmail.com and start fresh with the catering page? I also have an email address, contact@hiscateringbusiness.com, but it seems like Google never likes these. How do you recommend that I set up the catering G+Local pages? (This would also presumably be for Analytics and Webmaster Tools for the domain too.) Should I just start fresh? Can I even do it with a non-gmail account? Or will Google slap him for two unmerged accounts, even though they're for separate businesses? (I've looked all over the place and it looks like that it's still true that he can't just change the email associated with the restaurant G+ page... no?) Thank you!
