We are moving one website to a different domain and would like to know what is the best way to do it without hurting SEO

The website we want to move, let's say www.olddomain.com has a low quality back links profile, in fact it received a manual notification from google of unnatural links detected; but the home page has a PR 3. We want to move it to a different domain let's say www.newdomain.com. We would like to know if it's better to do a 301 redirect to the new domain, in order to transfer the link juice or if it would be better to do a 302, taking into account that this redirect won't pass any link juice, so it would be like start from scratch with this new domain.

Thanks for your help guys. What we are probably going to do is build the new site and start doing good SEO, and since we don't want to pass the link juice from the old site, I think we will just do a 302 redirect so that we don't loose any customers. Thanks again

This is more of a business decision, but you want to dive into that manual notification to get to why you received it. Assuming you were running the link building for olddomain.com, you should know which links are problem ones. If not, then you need to go through an audit of the links so you know which ones are problem ones (and can have that for future reference.)
You also want to factor in how much brand building you have done with the current domain. Do you have print collateral, print ads, business cards and a current customer base that knows that domain? Do you get direct type-in traffic for the domain? How are those customers going to react when they see the newdomain URL when typing in the old domain?
My personal site got a manual penalty b/c I built a bunch of low quality links trying to beat wikipedia for a term. That killed the main domain for that site for a little while until I cleaned up the link profile. Now my personal site has the penalty removed and is back in the SERPs. It's not quite to where it was pre-penalty, but I've also done zero link building outreach for that domain since the penalty was lifted. I'm confident that if I were to implement a solid content strategy for that domain this year that I would get back to where I was pre-penalty. It's just a matter of content and effort.
If you have a notification, now's the time to clean up some bad links and disavow the ones you can't remove. That shows Google that you're taking action and can stave off a penalty being applied.

I really hate it depends type answers, but you have some choices to make, and only you can answer the question about starting over.
First how easy was it to get the links required to get the PR 3 result? Do you already own the domains that brought that type of page rank. Or do you have a friend that you may contact to quickly build the links back? How about negative baggage the old domain brings with it. Does the old domain have links that that are non desirable that you may want to separate yourself from? Is the new website a completely different idea than the old website? If the new domain and old don't share a similar idea, the spiders may look at the old domain redirect as a negative for the new domain. An example might be if you had a chat room about camping products, and the new domain is related to Indy race cars, your not doing yourself any favors doing a 301 redirect.

IMO this is more of a business decision than an SEO one (especially without looking at the backlinks and the Google notification). Depending on the business, I'd probably just leave the old site up (and keep capturing leads through there) until it is actually penalized, and work on doing things the right way on the new site.
But only you know the extent of the dirt that was done on the old site, and that should probably be the determining factor. Don't get caught up in the PR stuff though, It wouldn't factor into my decision.

Nothing I Know About SEO can Explain these Rankings?
Hi all, I have a client who wants to rank more prominently for "plastic surgeon jupiter fl", a key term in his niche that attracts 11-50 searches per month (but these are potentially big ticket clients). If you look at the first page of results for that term, I can't make any sense of them. I've checked page speed, Google listing optimization, on-page SEO, link metrics etc. and there seems to be no correlation with good on-page SEO, quality links (or volume of links). Any thoughts?? I literally cannot explain why the #1 site shows 2 inbound links via Moz OSE and almost no on-page SEO to speak of while sites ranking page 2 have better on-page SEO, more links, higher quality links (from what I can tell) etc.

Two Different Domains exact same content
Hello, I suspect I know the answer to this but would like to have it confirmed. I have been speaking to a company the last couple of weeks who have 2 domains with the exact same content. Possible a third but they haven't supplied a link. This from all I've read would be a huge problem for ranking and SEO. What would be the best way to deal with this ? I did do a search and found articles/questions on same content on the same site and in articles etc but nothing about exactly the same websites on 2 domains. Cheers David.

Moving low ranking domain
I have a website, that I rewrote great content for, but I recently found that there are many, many links going to the subdomain that may be pulling it down. Has anyone had experience taking down a site and then moving the content to a new site? Will it be considered duplicate content if you completely take the old site down and use rel="canonical" on new site pages? I don't want to lose the good content, but I cannot have it on the current URL with all the bad backlinking (it's a complicated situation, as I need to keep those backlinks which are affiliates). Moving categories to new domain
Hello Mozzers , I'm trying to find best possible solution for this situation. So there is a website (e-commerce) and since it's grew up too much we are looking to move several categories on different domain. The reason for this is that we introduce completely different product group (example: we have products that are related to watches and everything related to watch industry but now we introduce leather products: wallets, bags etc). Do you think it is worth it to move new categories to new domain in order to better target this product group? In case of positive answer which is the best way to do it - 301 redirect or leave the products on this site and build a new site with slightly different product description and names? Regards, Nenad

Does Having 3 Websites On Magento Affect Domain Authority?
We have a client who has 3 separate websites targeting the US, Australia, and the UK. Each of them has relevant ccTLD's such as: .com .com.au and .co.uk. Our client wants to use the Magento multi-site function so it combines all the stores (which are the exact same products) and merge it into one through Magento. Will this affect his Domain Authority? Move webshop domain to the brand domain?
Hello, A client of mine has a brand with a website for over 10 years now.

About 4 years ago the have opened a webshop on an other domain (like www.brandnamewebshop.com). At this moment the brand domain has a seomoz authority of 45.
The webshop domain authority is 25. The question:
Would it not be better to transfer the webshop to the brand domain because of the domain authority? If so, how can this be done the best way? With a 301?
I also think: what a loss of energy of building the authority on the other domain.
Is it an idea to use both domains for a webshop and rewrite the content? Or is there an other way to still make use of the built up domain authority? Would it really help the other domain when I make a 301 redirect (and make use of the pointing links to the webshop domain?). I hope somebody have some experience with this...
