Footer link back to developers domain

I have read a lot about where it is suggested to either not put an attribute link in the footer of a clients site or to no follow it. But I have a little bit different take on the question.
How does this work on a large scale? Are these manual penalties, or are they automatic? By large scale, I am talking about big cms programs such as Wordpress, Joomla, and the likes of those. They all have links back to their site in the footer of the default templates. Is this bad? Does it not rally matter on the scale of companies such as this?

There are definitely sites that are (to quote George Orwell) "more equal than others".
Wordpress would be hooped is those types of links were catalysts to a penalty ... at least in a level world. I dont' think anyone could say with 100% certainty that it won't bite you in the butt so nofollow is probably the route to go.

I just wrote an answer to the post above, but the jist is not that it is an attribution link like so and so developed this site. It is more a default theme for a major software package. It might get 100k natural links in a month from having it in the footer. I would venture to guess it gets around 10k a month now from it.

I understand the thinking of that, but at the same time I am asking a question not about putting a link back on my clients pages. It has to do with the default theme of a major cms package. Something that might get 100k or so backlinks in a or two from people installing it.
After the whole pinterest thing, I think it is pretty obvious that Google has sites that they treat differently because of what ever reason. This might very well be one of those sites. Or I could be totally off base on this line of thinking.
I am just trying to figure out if a major default theme is going to suffer from not using a no-follow, or if it really does not matter per se.

It would be good to hear from others on this, but I think that footer backlinks like these to the developer's site are largely ignored by Google these days in terms of passing SEO value.
For many web developers, adding a link like that has been a sort of credit to them, rather like have a credit at the end of a film. It's what web developers have done and many still do. I haven't heard of any web developer's sites being slapped by having multiple backlinks like this, so maybe Google does see it that way.

As an SEo I never do it but that's more to the question, do I want to say, "Hey Google, here's a site that's been SEO'd." From the perspective of a web designer simply taking credit for their work, I've only seen it cause issues recently if they're followed links and anchor heavy. From my experience, branded links seem to work fine but mix it up.
That said, who knows what's coming. If you want to play it safe - nofollow is the way to go. But then, you probably knew that.

'Security error' for links accessed via Facebook on Android phones
Hi, This is not strictly a SEO/inbound marketing question, so please excuse me for that--- but I think this awesome community could certainly help 🙂 We recently migrated a client website to https (SSL from Godaddy; the hosting provider is a different one). All that went fine. The problem though is that when a link from the website is shared on Facebook or sent via Whatsapp, and a user tries to open the page on any Android device, it throws up a Security Error. On the Facebook app, it doesn't allow the user to go any further. It seems that this problem is not unique and many others have raised it in various forums -- we've tried many of the options mentioned; have tried to work with Godaddy support as well ---- but the problem persists. Any solution(s)/fixes will be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Manoj

Is there anything wrong to have large number of internal links pointing to homepage? Including links from sub domains or sub directories?
Hi all, Generally more number of internal links will be pointed to homepage. But I see some modern suggestions that too many internal links to homepage are not good. I'm just wondering if most number of internal links pointing to homepage may hurt? Also we have sub domains, can we point a link from every page of sub domain or sub directory to homepage? Usually the answer here is about users. Of course, the content is about same product across all pages. Thanks

New ecommerce site: Close old site and full domain redirect or keep it linking to new site?
We have rebranded and are working on our new site (B). Our old site (A) has a much higher domain/page authority than our new site. Currently we have the original Site A still there, with all links/pages pointing to the new Site B when people click. I am unsure whether we'd be best to close down the Site A completely and do a full domain redirect to Site B. Site A: 10 years age and has a moderate amount of links to it.

Footer links on my site... bad for passing page rank?
i've been told that it is possible that google discounts the weight or page rank passed in footer links of websites and my website has the navigation to many of my pages in the footer of each page. My whole website is about 20 pages so each page has links to the 5 most popular pages at the top and the rest of the links are in the footer of each page. Am i losing page rank by having these links in the footer? Should i make my navigation different? I have lots of articles on my site so i thought it might be not only helpful to my readers but give my pages an seo boost if i placed in context links in the body of my articles to other pages of my site. Spotted Hidden Omiod Links in Footer - What do you think is Going on Here?

While taking a look at the source code for a website I've recently started working on, I spotted some 'display:none' code in the footer of the page. Footer Links For Web Design Agencies - Bad?
So today Google have updated their Webmaster Guidelines and they have drawn particular attention to their update relating to Link Schemes. http://support.google.com/webmasters/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=66356 Unless you have had your eyes closed and your fingers in your ears since February then most people are aware of the types of link schemes that the updated is refering to but there is one area that isn't so black and white for me. "Here are a few common examples of unnatural links that violate our guidelines: Widely distributed links in the footers of various sites" We are a design agency and we design and build lots of websites for our clients. It is pretty standard practice for agencies to add a credit to the footer of websites and we pick up a lot of work from people that see a site that they like and click through the footer link to our site. Our footer credit is standard on all of the websites that we create:- Website by Teapot Creative Only the 'Teapot Creative' part of the credit is anchor text so we are only linking using our brand name with no intention of manipulating search results. Is this going to hurt us? or will the fact that we are only linking using our branded term and without any SEO intent keep us in the clear? Thanks.
