Multi channel product descriptions & dupe content issues
-
Hi
When filling in inventory files to upload to the likes of Amazon clients will usually be copying and pasting the product descriptions from the website product descriptions into the Amazon product description field
Should they really be re-written to avoid dupe content issues ?
I presume not since it is the official description of the product.
Please note that i'm talking here about the manufacturers website/product descriptions and their own Amazon shop descriptions. So theirs is the original authoritative description.
Cheers
Dan

Thanks for commenting Jen,
The seller is the manufacturer so yes.
Strange one since they (manufacturers site) should and probably will rank higher since the established brand and descriptions been live for a lot longer than on Amzn, but Amazon likely to rank well too due to authority and with time as you mention extra content via reviews etc etc
Hence presume fine to simply copy and paste description from manufacturers website into manufacturers amazon descriptions. Since site should rank better and Amazon will differentiate over time with reviews etc ?
cheers

Hi Dan,
Apologies, I'm not totally sure if I have understood your question. I am assuming you mean that the seller is copying the original product description which will also feature somewhere else on the web already, perhaps on the manufacturer's website, and they don't want to change it because that is the official description. If I have that right then my best guess would be that the answer would be the same as for Google's guidance on affiliate sites.
i.e. https://support.google.com/webmasters/answer/76465
Pages are not going to rank if all they offer is the same description that can be found elsewhere on the web. However, the pages could still rank if, in addition to the copied description, they offer sufficient additional unique value such as original product reviews, ratings, and product comparisons. So your clients could copy in the original description but then add more words, comparisons, reviews and so on, to ensure the page is of value.
I hope that helps, but sorry if I have misunderstood what you are asking!

Products and Services - Reselling - What about the description?
Hi, Let say there is a company which resell products and services of other companies. What do you think should be the strategy for putting the description of every service/product? 1. Should I copy the text from the original website and paste it on my page. In this case we get a website that has a lot of copied content, although it is a valid content. I notice that this is quite popular practice with local distributors who sell products of other (multinational) companies. If so, should I rel=canonical to the original product? But than I wouldn't rank for this product on local market right? 2. Should I come up with original descriptions? Would that give me and advantage over the websites that have copied the description from other pages? Appreciate your answer!

Should I change PDF content?
Hi everybody, My Website is ranking well for several keywords and long-tail keywords. However, all these visits are going directly to some .PDF guides that exist on our products and information on industry sectors the company is based around. I feel the PDF's are bad simply because they dont offer easy interaction with the rest of the website. I am considering making each PDF into a webpage but am not 100% sure of the pro's and cons of doing so. I will still need to the PDF's accessible for user to download but don't want my new webpages to get tagged as duplicate content. Is it possible to,

1 - change the PDF's so they send any link authority to the new webpage
2 - make google aware that I want the webpage not the PDF to be the "ranking" page What is the likely hood of destroying my rank for these keywords on the PDF by making these changes and then not being able to rank the webpage for the same keywords? It would be pointless if I just lost all the traffic lol.0 -
How do I fix duplicate page issue on Shopify with duplicate products because of collections.
I'm working with a new client with a site built on Shopify. Most of their products appear in four collections. This is creating a duplicate content challenge for us. Can anyone suggest specific code to add to resolve this problem. I'm also interested in other ideas solutions, such as "don't use collections" if that's the best approach. I appreciate your insights. Thank you!

Duplicate Content, Same Company?
Hello Moz Community, I am doing work for a company and they have multiple locations. For example, examplenewyork.com, examplesanfrancisco.com, etc. They also have the same content on certain pages within each website. For example, examplenewyork.com/page-a has the same content as examplesanfrancisco.com/page-a Does this duplicate content negatively impact us? Or could we rank for each page within each location parameter (for example, people in new york search page-a would see our web page and people in san fran search page-a would see our web page)? I hope this is clear. Thanks, Cole

Social Media Profile and Website content dupe content issues ?
Is there a dupe content issue if your social media profiles and website have same content/copy ? For example if you have written great copy for your website home page then literally copy & paste that into your G+ co page introduction (since sums everything up perfectly and don't want to change it) would that have a negative effect or be perfectly ok ? cheers dan

Issue with old sitemap
Hi Quite new to SeoMoz so some learning curve but we have one issue on a site perhaps someone can advise on? We have many duplicate page titles / content, we think this was due to a corrupt sitemap.xml file, all of the URL's look like this with an odd page at the end http://www.totalpetsupplies.co.uk/problem.aspx?aspxerrorpath=/animals/Cat_Accessories_Pet_Collars/privacy.aspx So that XML map was removed well over a week ago, the new sitemap is an apsx generated one to get all pages correctly show as www.totalpetsuppies.co.uk/sitemap.aspx. Goolge and Bing have that. SeoMoz re did our site and the errors went up a bit!! Not sure how that process works, anyone any suggestions? Cheers Shaun
