Is there an efficient way to use Open Site Explorer to find unnatural or harmful links
-
We have a new client with 8 sites that we would like to 301 to a new site. However, before doing so we want to make sure that the backlinks are not unnatural or harmful in any way.
Using open site explorer (other than just looking at exact anchor text vs brand anchor text ratio) is there a way to determine low quality inbound sites linking in? or any type of links google will find manipulative?
-
I'm honestly not sure if there's a great way to use that process to drill back into the links to see which ones are low quality - it was intended more as a big picture look at your entire profile. We're actively working on more spam detection metrics, but it's a tricky business and we're really concerned about potentially giving people false alarms, especially with so many people hacking at their links.
I know some folks use OSE to export links and pull out specific bits of data, like very low PA pages, pages with exact-match anchor text on keyword-heavy phrases (non-brand), etc., but even then you've got to be a bit careful. A low PA page isn't necessarily "bad", just relatively weak, from a link perspective.
One spam marker we've found pretty relevant is sites with a disproportionately low MozTrust to their MozRank (or to their DA). Sites with high authority but low trust may have spammy link profiles in general. These are the kinds of factors that 3rd-party link evaluation tools look at. Some of them are a good starting point, but you still need to fact-check.
I'd definitely start with some kind of domain-based analysis. Your 40K links might be coming from 4K domains, or even 400. Getting a broad sense of linking-domain quality will be an easier starting point.

Bryan,
Dr. Pete did a post on this a while back and it might cut some time off the project for you. http://moz.com/blog/link-profiling-with-open-site-explorer.

Thanks Mark,
What if the site has 40,000 links?
How do sites like removeem do it? Just for the initial report?
Really hoping there is a way to do this without having to spend eternity manually looking : )

In my experience no.
You just have to take the time and go to each site and asses it for yourself. Its no fun but worth doing.

Link tracking list not finding my links
I am using the Link Tracking List to track new backlinks that I have achieved. However, the report still shows about half of them as not found... even some that have been there for several weeks. I thoroughly tested a couple of them to make sure the links were coded in html, there were no nofollow/noindex rules, the bot was not blocked etc, but still found nothing. What can I do now?

How can I get links indexed in Just Discovered Links, or Open site Explorer? (Because it aint Bit.ly or Feedly!)
Dear Moz & Forum, I've been on a bit of a merry-go-round with one of my clients. He knows enough about SEO to ask questions, and one thing he likes is to see the links that we are building inside Open Site Explorer. Now, of course we know that it takes a while for links to show, but that was ok, because we could just plug the links that we've built into a bit.ly link and then they'd show under Just Discovered Links in Open Site Explorer, and then boom, we're happy. It stopped working some time ago, and after the support team were a little unstuck I sent a hopeful tweet to @randfish. Here is the response: https://twitter.com/randfish/status/788412272129347584 The advice to use Bit.Ly was removed swiftly after this! Oops! The current Guidance is here: https://moz.com/help/guides/research-tools/open-site-explorer/justdiscovered It says: Want to see your new link in the Just-Discovered Links tab? An easy way to start seeing your link in the Just-Discovered section is to have it shared on Twitter and available on Feedly link. Feedly stopped supporting their own link shortner a few years ago. Also, when you share a link from Feedly on twitter it is just the same as sharing a normal tweet, because it shares the standard URL for the site not a link to view on Feedly. Or, maybe these two statements are independant of one another and they should both be done separately? I've done that too! I've also added the feed to recommended feeds inside fresh web explorer and that didn't work either! So, Moz and Help team please help me! How can I get links I've built for clients into Just Discovered Links? Thank you!

Can I use the keyword explorer to find negative keywords? We focus on a few things in our business that we focus on but the feedback that I get from the tool is not helpful
All in all, this business focuses in a very small area, and there are things that others in our business do that we do not.Yes,a guy that knows nothing about SEO... This is a junk removal business, and some of the competition do everything. This is a small outfit that only hauls junk.Much of the competition that we have sells junk bins,we do not.We just haul junk..we do not paint,or any of the things that they do. I just keep getting things sent to me me in my list here about bin sales etc,and it is making impossible to search for keywords without a way to manage what is coming in some way..Google let me do this, but I am just hoping to use this tool entirely if I am going to pay for it.Maybe I am lost being new,and confused. How can I use this tool? Are there any settings,or anything that you can teach a non SEO minded guy like me? Thanks

What happened to my links in Open Site Explorer.
Hello, A while ago I had a problem with open site explorer saying that I had a problems with redirects on my home page. There was 302 redirect and it was giving me information from my www domain rather then from non www domain. With your awesome help, this issue is sorted now and when I type in my non www domain, it doesn't give me that weird message anymore. I have a different issue now. For some reason when I enter non www domain it doesn't show links from www version. I presume that this is affecting my site authority for non www version. Does it mean that link juice was not passed on to non www version from www version? Authority dropped by two points, but I'm not sure why. I'm more interested to know why it doesn't show my links from www version on non www version. And is that affecting my sites rankings. Thank you, Regards, Armands

My Backlinks are Coming ZERO in Open SIte Explorer
I have made many links for my website, I checked in majestic it showed me about 40. But MOZ is showing Zero. The last i remember I checked: Add noodp meta robots tag sitewide in SEO YOAST. It said it prevents search engines from using the DMOZ description for pages from this site in the search results. Also I have a NoIndex (canonical ) on category, archive, author, tag to avoid Duplicate Data. But when i see the source of my website, it shows <rel link="canonical">on every single page and post of website. Can this be the reason why MOZ is not showing any backlinks? </rel>

Open Site Explorer Top Pages https Title tag issue
Hello, everybody. I've noticed this strange thing in Top Pages reporting of Open Site Explorer. If i do a report for any website which doesn't have security certificate installed, such as http://www.hyperlinksmedia.com I get normal results, with title tag shown for every page, but, if i do a report for website with Security certificate, such as https://www.hyperlinksmedia.com, report is coming back for non-secure URL version (http:...), so, it says "No Title" for any pages. I wonder, if it influence PA and DA scores. Although, if i run full crawl test, then i shows all meta and title tags for SSL version of a website's url. Thanks!
