301 forwarding old urls to new urls - when should you update sitemap?
-
Hello Mozzers,
If you are amending your urls - 301ing to new URLs - when in the process should you update your sitemap to reflect the new urls?
I have heard some suggest you should submit a new sitemap alongside old sitemap to support indexing of new URLs, but I've no idea whether that advice is valid or not.
Thanks in advance, Luke

Hi Luke
To include the suggestion on searchenginewatch.com in this conversation, it said:
Submit an updated sitemap to Google Webmaster tools and use the change of address function if moving to a new domain. Remember to initially keep the old URLs in your XML sitemap to facilitate Google crawling those links and processing the changes in their index.
Well it would be interesting to hear others feedback on that. Personally, I think having old URLs in a sitemap (that without a redirect would result in a page not found 404 error) doesn't seem correct to me.
Presumably, you have had the URL in the sitemap previously when the page at the URL was active. But then, by setting up a 301 redirect, you are telling Google that the page at the URL that Google has in its index has now permanently moved to a new URL.
When you submit a sitemap to Google then you are submitting a list of all the URLs on your site that you are asking Google to crawl. But to include the old URL in your sitemap along with the new URL is essentially asking Google to crawl two URLs pointing to the same page.
I'm not sure Google would necessarily consider that to be a canonical issue (because the old URL is now not current) but for me it's a misuse of the sitemap.
But as I say, it would be interesting to hear others feedback on this.

Thanks Peter - I note here:

Here it's suggested that sites keep old URLs in their sitemaps. I've heard others suggest otherwise. Seems to be a fair bit of conflicting advice out there.

Hi Luke
My advice would be that you submit one the sitemap containing the new URLs. The new sitemap should contain the new URLs and replace the old sitemap.
The 301 redirects are for the purpose of redirecting outdated links and search engine indexes to the new 301 (permanent) URLs and should remain in place even when search engines have updated their indexes so that they always redirect any outdated backlinks.
I hope that helps,
Peter

Need to update Google Search Console profile for http to https change. Will a "change of address" option suffice or do we need to create a new GSC profile?
In the past I have seen most clients create new Google Search Profile when they update to a https URL. However a colleague of mine asked if just updating the change of address option will suffice https://support.google.com/webmasters/answer/83106. Would it be best to just update the change of address for the Google Search Console profile to keep the data seamless? Thanks

301's - Do we keep the old sitemap to assist google with this ?
Hello Mozzers, We have restructured our site and have done many 301 redirects to our new url structure. I have seen one of my competitors have done similar but they have kept the old sitemap to assist google I guess with their 301's as well. At present we only have our new site map active but am I missing a trick by not have the old one there as well to assist google with 301's. thanks Pete

New Site Launch - Redirecting Hundreds of Old Invalid URLs?
We have a client whose WMT shows a ton of "Not found" crawl errors after a new site launched. The URLs are largely a bunch of files that they had previously uploaded on their old site which have external links pointing at them. What is their best course of action, if they don't have files on the new site that correspond with these old files? Redirect to the home page? Leave them 404ing? Customize 404 message? (Note: They're mostly generic, non-human friendly URLs that are difficult to identify like /gallery3.php/ppage/3, g/interior.php/pid/3/sid/24, /uploads/1213196781.pdf)

Working on SEO for client who is at a new address. Luckily? there are no google reviews attached to the old addresses (there 2). Should I try to update one of the old ones? Or should I just go ahead and create a new listing? What are the pros and cons of each decision.

E-commerce Adding New Content - Blog vs New Page
I have an ecommerce site (www.brick-anew.com) focused on Fireplace products and we also have a separate blog (fireplacedecorating.com) focused on fireplace decorating. My ecommerce site needs new content, pages, internal links, etc... for more Google love, attention, and rankings. My question is this: Should I add a blog to the ecommerce site for creating new content or should I just add and create new pages? I have lots of ideas for relevant new content related to fireplaces. Are there any SEO benefits to a blog over new static pages? Thanks! SAM

301 a strong but under-performing landing page to a new domain?
Hi guys, Our website have a very strong landing page (PA 80, more than 1,000 domains linking) but is currently not ranking at all as the targeted terms are dominated by exact match domains. We are thinking of redirecting this particular page to a new partial match domain targeting the same keywords. Is it a good move?

sdhydroponics.com
and a wordpress install on
sdhydroponics.com/resources In Magento we get the XML sitemap manually by going to Catalog => Google Sitemap => Add Sitemap In wordpress we use Google XML sitemaps plugin. My questions are: Do I need both of these sitemaps? Or can I use one or the other? If I use both, do I make one sitemap1.xml and the other sitemap2.xml and drop them in the root? How do I make sure google knows I have 2 sitemaps? Anything else I should know? Thank You0 -
Best way to migrate to a new URL structure
Hello everyone, We’re changing our URL structure from something like this: example.com/index.php?language=English To something like this: example.com**/english/**index.php The change is implemented with mod_rewrite so all the old URLs can still work We have hundreds of thousands of pages that are currently indexed with the old URL structure What’s the best way to get Google to rapidly update its index and to maintain as much ranking as possible? 301 redirect all the old URLs to the new equivalent format? If we detect that the URL is in an old format, render the page with a canonical tag pointing to the new equivalent format as well as adding a noindex, nofollow tag? Something else? Thanks for your input!
