Problem with Google reading https homepage?
-
Hi Moz Community,
In July, we changed our homepage to https via a 301 redirect from http (the only page on our site with https).
Our homepage receives an A grade in the ‘On Page Grader’ by Moz for our desired keyword.
We have increased our backlink efforts directly to our homepage since we switched to the SSL homepage. However, we still have not increased in search ranking for our specific keyword.
Is there something we could have missed when doing the 301 redirect (submitting a new sitemap, changing rotbots.txt files, or anything else??) that has resulted in Google not correctly accessing the https version? (the https page has been indexed by Google).
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Federico,
Thanks for taking the time to check out the site. I understand that there are hundreds of factors that come into play when looking at search ranking. It's just frustrating that we've pretty much followed all the instructions laid out on SEO Moz but don't seem to be getting the results - the only reason I can see why this might be is because of something related to our homepage under SSL (the redirect, the sitemap, or something simple missing in the structure).
I have analyzed our competitors and I cannot see why we are not getting improvements compared to what they are doing.
When choosing an SEO professional, how can we be sure that they will be able to diagnose the issue we are having as nobody so far has been able to pinpoint the issue?

Hey G,
I took a quick look at your Website and link profile.
There's no much I can suggest other than continue working on your site. The on page grader is just another metric, but you can't take that and expect higher rankings.
Google say they consider over 200 metrics to rank Websites, not only links, but also content, navigation, user interface, etc.
If I was required to suggest you changes these a few a would start:
- make the site on HTTP or HTTPS. There's no reason to have only your homepage under HTTPS unless you transfer sensitive data over a form in that page (password). You have the sign up and sign in forms, both using a target script that is under HTTPS, but no other page actually requires HTTPS. I would personally go with everything HTTPS. While we are on this, Godaddy certificates, while cheap are insanely slow. I mean, each time a user request a page under SSL, it needs to verify the certificate with Godaddy's repos, and theirs is slower than several other issuing entities. I guess that's because the amount of certs they have (given the price). I would choose to use a better provider.
- Are you using some kind of HTML compressor? I guess you are because of your output. Have you considered using CloudFlare? As you will probably leverage from several of their features, like file catching (none of your images is being cached).
- Consider writing a blog, creating content that others can use and then link to your site. You already have interesting links, but getting new on a daily basis naturally will help a lot.
- Check your HTML, there are some html errors.
- Check your competitors, what are they doing that you aren't? (except of shady SEO techniques).
As for the 301, it is perfectly implemented. Your robots file has nothing in it and does not need to. You can probably add (and remove everything else in the file):
User-Agent: *
Allow: /But it wouldn't help much or even anything.
It will require a much more in-depth research, you may want to hire a professional SEO to look at your site and competitors'. I based my quick review only on your site, I don't know who your competitors are or what keywords you are targeting.
Hope that helps, a bit at least

Hi Fredico,
In addition to my last response to your comment, I've attached the Moz results for the page I am referring to. We are currently ranked number 8, and I have no idea why we wouldn't be ahead of the competitors in slot number 3, 4, or 5 (considering we have a higher on page SEO grading than them too).
Again, these all just point to the fact that we might have some basic technical issue with the 301 redirect that is stopping some juice or properly reading of our page.

Hi Federico,
Thanks for taking the time to respond. Here's a link to the homepage of the site where we have the 301 redirect to https: http://goo.gl/qpGPFa
I have a feeling that we are not doing something correctly with regards to the robots.txt file or with our sitemap that is resulting on Google having to index the https and the http parts of our site individually.
Regardless, any advice/input you might have on why you think our rankings are not increasing would be greatly appreciated (we have higher Domain Authority, Page Authority, and Backlinks than one of our competitors ranked who is higher!)

Hey,
As far as I know, Google has no issues at all reading HTTPS pages even if the site has mixed pages (http and https).
Probably, your Website lacks authority and that's why you are not ranking better. Not only the links help, in fact, there are over 200 factors that contribute to ranking Websites by Google.
If you share the URL, we can probably give some suggestions of what to do.
Question tho, why securing only the homepage but the entire site? Do you have a login form in the homepage only?

When does Google index a fetched page?
I have seen where it will index on of my pages within 5 minutes of fetching, but have also read that it can take a day. I'm on day #2 and it appears that it has still not re-indexed 15 pages that I fetched. I changed the meta-description in all of them, and added content to nearly all of them, but none of those changes are showing when I do a site:www.site/page I'm trying to test changes in this manner, so it is important for me to know WHEN a fetched page has been indexed, or at least IF it has. How can I tell what is going on?

Website penalised can't find where the problem is. Google went INSANE
Hello, I desperately need a hand here! Firstly I just want to say that I we never infracted google guidelines as far as we know. I have been around in this field for about 6 years and have had success with many websites on the way relying only in natural SEO and was never penalised until now. The problem is that our website www.turbosconto.it is and we have no idea why. (not manual) The web has been online for more than 6 months and it NEVER started to rank. it has about 2 organic visits a day at max. In this time we got several links from good websites which are related to our topic which actually keep sending us about 50 visits a day. Nevertheless our organic visita are still 1 or 2 a day. All the pages seem to be heavily penalised ... when you perform a search for any of our "shops"even including our Url, no entries for the domain appear. A search example: http://www.turbosconto.it zalando What I will expect to find as a result: http://www.turbosconto.it/buono-sconto-zalando The same case repeats for all of the pages for the "shops" we promote. Searching any of the brads + our domain shows no result except from "nike" and "euroclinix" (I see no relationship between these 2) Some days before for these same type of searches it was showing pages from the domain which we blocked by robots months ago, and which go to 404 error instead of our optimised landing pages which cannot be found in the first 50 results. These pages are generated by our rating system... We already send requests to de index all theses pages but they keep appearing for every new page that we create. And the real pages nowhere to be found... Here isan example: http://www.turbosconto.it/shops/codice-promozionale-pimkie/rat

You can see how google indexes that for as in this search: site:www.turbosconto.it rate Why on earth will google show a page which is blocked by the robots.txt displaying that the content cannot retrieved because it is blocked by the robots instead of showing pages which are totally SEO Friendly and content rich... All the script from TurboSconto is the same one that we use in our spanish version www.turbocupones.com. With this last one we have awesome results, so it makes things even more weird... Ok apart from those weird issues with the indexation and the robots, why did a research on out backlinks and we where surprised to fin a few bad links that we never asked for. Never the less there are just a few and we have many HIGH QUALITY LINKS, which makes it hard to believe that this could be the reason. Just to be sure we, we used the disavow tool for these links, here are the bad links we submitted 2 days ago: domain: www.drilldown.it #we did not ask for this domain: www.indicizza.net #we did not ask for this domain: urlbook.in #we did not ask for this, moreover is a spammy one http://inpe.br.way2seo.org/domain-list-878 #we did not ask for this, moreover is a spammy one http://shady.nu.gomarathi.com/domain-list-789 #we did not ask for this, moreover is a spammy one http://www.clicdopoclic.it/2013/12/i-migliori-siti-italiani-di-coupon-e.html #we did not ask for this, moreover and is a copy of a post of an other blog http://typo.domain.bi/turbosconto.it I have no clue what can it be, we have no warning messages in the webmaster tools or anything.
For me it looks as if google has a BUG and went crazy on judging our italian website. Or perhaps we are just missing something ??? If anyone could throw some light on this I will be really glad and willing to pay some compensation for the help provided. THANKS A LOT!0 -
Google Fetch Issue
I'm having some problems with what google is fetching and what it isn't, and I'd like to know why. For example, google IS fetching a non-existent page but listing it as an error: http://www.gaport.com/carports but the actual url is http://www.gaport.com/carports.htm. Google is NOT able to fetch http://www.gaport.com/aluminum/storage-buildings-10x12.htm. It says the page doesn't exist (even though it does) and when I click on the not found link in Google fetch it adds %E@%80%8E to the url causing the problem. One theory we have is that this may be some sort of server/hosting problem, but that's only really because we can't figure out what we could have done to cause it. Any insights would be greatly appreciated. Thanks and Happy Holidays! Ruben

HTTPS Certificate Expired. Website with https urls now still in index issue.
Hi Guys This week the Security certificate of our website expired and basically we now have to wail till next Tuesday for it to be re-instated. So now obviously our website is now index with the https urls, and we had to drop the https from our site, so that people will not be faced with a security risk screen, which most browsers give you, to ask if you are sure that you want to visit the site, because it's seeing it as an untrusted one. So now we are basically sitting with the site urls, only being www... My question what should we do, in order to prevent google from penalizing us, since obviously if googlebot comes to crawl these urls, there will be nothing. I did however re-submitted it to Google to crawl it, but I guess it's going to take time, before Google picks up that now only want the www urls in the index. Can somebody please give me some advice on this. Thanks Dave

Can Google read my backlink in Javascript??
Hi SeoMoz community! I have a software product, which our clients implement onto their websites. It is like a pop up box. I know that backlinks are very important for SEO ranking, and I really want to give our clients 2 options of product: 1. you can get the free/cheaper option if you use the code which has a keyworded backlink to our site on it 2. you can pay small fee if you don't want to use the version with a link to our site on it Now, the problem is that the product is written entirely in Javascript, and I don't think that Google crawls this, do they? Is there a way around this? Thanks for your help!
