I have a client, (for example Henry Jewelers) who likes to advertise their site as www.henry.com, but their main site resides on HenryJewelers.com. If www.henry.com has a permanent redirect to henryjewelers.com, are the two sites impacted negatively from a SEO standpoint?
-
Not necessarily, unless you already have something built and with enough authority on henryjewelers.com
apple computer - apple.com
abercrombie & fitch - abercrombie.comTiffany & Company - tiffany.com
etc.
-
I was under the impression that by having the type of business directly in the domain name would help with page rank over the long haul. In my understanding, if all content is the same on both sites, henryjewelers.com will rank better than henry.com.
-
Some pagerank is diluted over a 301 redirect. The same as if you had one link to HenryJewelers.com from Henry.com.
It will certainly be better to use the actual domain. But not going the other way around? Is HenryJewelers.com an established website with lots of value? are all the links pointing to Henry.com? why not going with Henry.com as the main address, it clearly makes more sense user-wise.
-
I see, well this is not very elegant so far and not really "perfect" regarding SEO aspects BUT all the things (advertisements that might generate a link to henry.com etc.) that my help building up DA, Pagerank, linkjuice etc. will be passed through to the other domain... you won`t loose anything of that by using a 301
this might not be the most perfect solution what your client prefers but it`s not uncommon
-
I was thinking that it would affect SEO through backlinks. The customer puts henry.com on EVERY type of advertisement that they run - flyers, business cards, social media posts, guest blog articles, email blasts, paid web ads/banners, etc. They rarely advertise with HenryJewelers.com.
-
SIMPLE: NO
A permanent redirect (301) is a common and absolutely normal thing... I can`t see any negative effect in such a case

Canonicalising a product with multiple variants
I am working with an ecommerce site and have encountered an issue I haven't come across before and would appreciate some advice on how to proceed. There are multiple variation products with one master product and then up to 20 or 30 variant products, the variation could be colour, size or both. The site has been set up to canonicalise all the variations to the master variant product, which I understand to be best practice. But, this is where the issue occurs, the master variant product URL 302 redirects to one of the variant product URLs. Example below. My question is, is this harmful to our SEO efforts? Would be be best to canonicalise to a preferred colour or size variation? EXAMPLE: Master variant product: www.example.co.uk/primary-category/product-123 Seeing this product on the page and clicking will 302 redirect to www.example/co.uk/primiary-category/product-123/colour-456 On page www.example/co.uk/primiary-category/product-123/colour-456 the canonical tag is www.example.co.uk/primary-category/product-123 Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.

Is my domain holding me back in the SERPS?
Even after a good year or so, my site intensivedrivingschoolmiltonkeynes.co.uk does not rank in the top 10 (google.co.uk) for "Intensive Driving School Milton Keynes", and is nowhere for "Driving School Milton Keynes". Do you think the domain name is being penalised, or do you think there are other factors that contribute to the poor performance.

Multiple and tags
It has recently come to our attention that some of the pages on our site have multiple and tags. I understand that this goes against best practices-- but I was wondering if anyone could tell me specifically how this could be impacting our site's performance and search rankings.

How can i make my sub-domain bring in more traffic?
we have a social networking site that has user-generated content and users have to log in before they can access the platform. We are in the process of creating indexable pages that google bots can pick up. These pages will sit in front of the log in pages and will be open for guest access. Can you advise on the best way of optimising these pages for higher ranking and traffic.

Duplicate biographies across several domains?
Hey Gang, We've built a niche specific, manually edited legal community that is full of unique content. (While it's ultimately a directory, and that is often viewed as a bad word in these times, ours is a curated source that doesn't allow anyone and everyone to join.) We feel comfortable that it passes the sniff test post-panda/penguin, etc., and its doing rather well to date. The question we have is do we really need to create unique biographies for each of our legal members? Some of our competitors simply use the same bio information that the lawyer has on their own website and copies that to their site. The competitors I'm talking about are LARGE, well-respected, extremely successful folks, like FindLaw. Here's an example: Lawyer's website bio FindLaw website bio Both rank, etc., and the FindLaw code doesn't place any restrictions on their content regarding the bio., and it's an obvious exact match. I get that duplicate content is primarily a concern among one's own URL and the pages across a specific domain, using rel-canonical, etc., but what about two different domains that need to supply factual information that can't be altered? Is it anything we should worry ourselves with? Any tags we should insert in our code with regard to the bios? Thanks!!! Wayne

Best Domain Name for Life Coaching Site
Hello, I am an NLP health coach. I am starting to work with both life threatening illnesses and minor diagnoses. NLP is a type of personal development. I'm wondering what your opinion of the best domain would be, keeping in mind branding, SEO, and usability/rememberability. The term "NLP" is not well known. I will be doing both phone coaching and in-person coaching. My other website (BobWeikel.com) is not very strong because of the lack of keywords in the domain, but it's easy to remember. Options are: NLPTrained.com BobWeikelHealthCoach.com BoiseHealthCoach.com (I'm in Boise Idaho) RobertWeikel.com or whatever you suggest.

Negatives to using custom sub domain?
So - being photographers, we have our main website, but also, we use a hosted service for all our client galleries (www.zenfolio.com) So, in effect, we have two websites: Our main informational website Our client gallery/proofing website The client gallery has back links to our main website - so, when people are viewing their gallery, they can easily get back to our main site. We also have thrown a few of our preferred keywords in there for SEO purposes. The gallery has thousands of pages which link back to the main site. So.. the client gallery URL can either be: http://ourbusinessname.zenfolio.com OR we can have it so it uses our own domain, such as: http://gallery.ourbusinessname.com The question is, which domain name will benefit the back links more? Our custom subdomain (which links to our main domain) or, using the Zenfolio domain (which is external to our site). Or, is there no real difference either way? Or.. do I make no sense?
