E-commerce canonicals on other sites
-
Hi,
I have a client with a new e-commerce site which is poorly ranked. Besides his e-commerce, he offers his products in a local site which very similar to Amazon. The description and HTML structure of his products, is the same on both pages.
What do you think? Should I add canonical tags to the Amazon-like site?
Or do I just need to change both contents to avoid duplication?
-
Well, that makes more sense now !! I didn't read it correctly then. Sorry, my mistake. Well, to address your question in that regards then;
1. If I were you, and you have access to their amazon-like site, code and ability to modify, you could very well implement the canonical tag, and redirect all value and links to your clients domain. I wouldn't count on that other site driving any traffic at later points though once the value shift takes place. Those product pages will become mute.
2. Option 2 -> By keeping both sites open (amazon and client site), you have the possibility of driving multiple sources of traffic for the client domain and products, and building the main client site out to out perform the amazon-like site.
Still, following the steps above will help you plan a good solid strategy going forward and will help support the sites performance, user experience to ultimately improve sales conversions and revenue
Cheers!

Hi Rob,
Thank you very much for taking the time to write such a complete and detailed answer. It was definitely very helpful.
When I was talking about canonicals, I meant to include the tag on the amazon-like site, pointing to my client's site. Not the other way around. The products I manage on that site are loaded with HTML code, so I could perfectly add the canonical tag.
If the content is unique and very well written, it made a little bit of sense. I guess that I will change the content from the local site and put some standard technical specifications.
Again, thank you for your advices!

Hi Guillermo,
First, do not place or run canonical tags from your site to the amazon like site. This would be telling Google that their site is in fact the authority source for the products which are for sale. Doing this in the long run would untimately kill your clients web traffic and site in time.
Next, look at both your site and amazon-like product site. Is it pulling in the product descriptions dynamically or do you have to update them manually between both sites (your client and the amazon site)? This is an important step when trying to strategize how to best implement the tactics you will use.
Next, look at the client site. If you really want to build this site up, it's going to take some work. Here are a few things you can do to improve the client site information and
1. Write ALL NEW content descriptions about each product (this can take time, but it's worth every second). Make them fun and detailed providing unique approaches to the products being sold.
2. If you can, provide video reviews of the products, or use video to showcase the product in a way that will help people searching and researching it. Don't let this slide. It can also help your 'time on site' and time on page metrics which we know improve the overall success of a site online within the SERP results (Google).
3. Provide numerous images of the product. Realign this with improving the gallery function of the site to showcase products. Use at least 5-6 images per product from numerous angles and allow for clear visibility of the product. Make sure to offer both small thumbnails and when clicked on - clear large images that users can see. This again will help with product showcase.
4. Implement a feed which will allow users and visitors to comment on products (after purchase), thus offering some user feedback to visitors about each one sold, experiences, etc. This also helps improve sales conversion ratios and can also help the company identify trouble areas that need attention (customer service, shipping, the product itself, sales funnel and process, etc). If monitored, these can be invaluable info to help improve conversions and increase ROI.
5. Offer a blog on the site which reviews products to start. Use this tool to promote various products and offer in depth information about them. You can then move to develop a content strategy to improve the long tail search. Look to find keywords that revolve around clients 'searching' for the product using questions. Use these questions to develop content which provide answers. This is a key element now in search and should be leveraged to the best of your ability.
6. Implement a full social media strategy for the client site. Line up all the social media accounts to accurately reflect each other and unify them in the way they look and feel (descriptions, picture, info, phone #'s, etc). Make it all uniform. Next ensure you have the key elements and pages ready (LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter, Google+, Pinterest). Line these up so that the client can use these to not only promote their products, content, etc, but to improve brand development and especially customer service. These platforms can be leveraged to so much more now than just 'sharing' good content and the client needs to understand this. Embed all these through social media 'share' buttons on each product page to improve the 'sharability' of these products online.
7. Research both the local and global search markets and align yourself with building each profile out (store location, local search, etc) Work to build and drive traffic on both levels using all the strategy.
8. Run A/B tests on the pages once all this is done. Look at your analytics data to identify things that need improvement. Funnel, descriptions, pages, added video, user feedback and reviews, etc. It will all help provide the depth you need to surpass the amazon-like site Ultimately, work to make the pages unique in every way. See what this amazon site is NOT doing and work to improve the user experience.
Also - (but you should already know this ensure that each page has clear and concise meta data, product descriptions, titles, image ALT tags, etc. This will also require some work, but is very key move. Not only will adjusting the content on the page
Taking the time to develop out a strategy like this, in the long run, will help improve the user experience by offering a superior site, customer services and sales!
Cheers!

Hi Davinia,
Thanks for answering. Yes, we are very active on ppc and other channels. But this channel in particular charges a killer commission for every sale. So we were trying to find a way to place my client's site before this local site on organic results. I'm not sure this will be possible.

Hi,
If the local site is just using snippets of content from your main site then I'd recommended using the manufactures product blurbs on the local site and on the main site using unique, compelling and interesting content.
For a given search query the local site is a competitor for rankings, so as a paid placement you should be looking to get sales from channels other than organic (i.e. the local sites own marketing activity). Over time you might find that your client can drop off the local site (saving costs) and rely solely on their own ranking placements and marketing activities.
Good luck,
Davinia

Can a feeder site link directly to the main site?
I have a client that has several coupons sites. They have about 15 different URLS all of which are [city]deals.com all of the domains have coupons lists that are relevant to that area. Other than the coupons there is not any other content on the sites. There is a Main site however, that has coupons, content, store locations, blogs, news etc... The coupons on the feeder sites are displayed differently than what is displayed on the main site. They are also categorized differently. So the question is on the feeder sites can they have the coupon link directly to the store page on the main site?

Links Removed from Site but not Google Webmaster Tools
I have a new client who has been fighting to get past an unnatural links penalty. One of the biggest reasons behind it was that they paid to get a followed link/ad on a blog network, well this ad ended up being a site wide link which ended up giving them thousands of back links within a few days. After getting the owner of the blog network to remove the link i manually spot checked a handful of pages and used screaming frog to crawl looking for a link referencing their site. From what i can tell they are all gone. However they are still in Google Webmaster Tools as well as Google's index and it has been a couple months since they have been removed. Does anyone have any advice on getting them removed from Google's entities even though they are already off of the website? Thank you in advance,

Network of sites
Hi guys, Wanted to get your opinion. Ran a backlink profile of a client and discovered there is a number of sites that linked to the main site. The number of sites are owned by the client and seems to be built on the purpose of just backlinking, there is footer links (exact match keyword links) The website aren't linked together in analytics or webmasters but shows up in whois under the same company. I think the best bet is get all those links removed from footer and let the domains expire once it finishes - seems to serve no purpose. But the bigger question is what are good reasons I can feed back to the client that it's has a negative affect?

Networking sites / paid links
A national networking company charges its members, say, a few of hundred pounds to become part of their network, which involves offline networking events and online in forums and a directory. All the links of the directory and forum sigs etc are all do-follow. While it's not just a directory, how beneficial a link is this likely to be? The site itself has a DA of 60 and a PR rank of 4. 1k likes on their cnnected FB page and 21 likes on the G+. At the networking meetings they tell new recruits that being a member gives them a very valuable backlink and everytime they participate in the forums they get another do follow backlink. Ive checked and they are dofollow. Is this likely to be a great value link?

Best Way to Analyse Linking Structure of My Site
My site http://www.taxproblem.org is now undergoing many changes due to bad report card scores from this site. I've had people tell me that my linking structure was obviously artificial, especially if most of my links are from "Mr. Wong - social site" O.K. stop laughing 🙂 Yes we use bookmarking demon and rss feed wp plug ins, etc. But haven't discovered how to best get links yet, although reading a lot and waiting on seomoz's DVD's I ordered. 1. What is the best way to analyse our sites linking structure to determine if Google will consider it bad (my site was trashed by Google twice in the last two years) probably for link farms and the like. I know the obvious, but I was looking for a program with guidelines to judge by. 2. The best source to review the many strategies for getting back links so I am not a victim of rehashed b/s based on someones fears of Google, but actually good methods that work. We offer something of value. (CPA firm doing IRS rep. and we have a free download so people can do their own IRS rep and save thousands, and know it's done right) I need to know the bast way to market this. I need good souces for info and for keeping up. Thanks in advance to all that can help.

Link building tools/sites
I am looking for a way to share my content in multiple locations to build back links without having to upload one at a time per location. For example- if i write an article and i upload it to ezine articles and then post it over on my blog- it will then post over on my twitter and facebook and linked in. However- how i can also get this article with back links into shared sites, bookmark sites, and other locations online to help build my inbound marketing for back links. I'm trying to find a way to save time while building out the links.
