Losing traffic - What are we doing wrong ?
-
Hi, my ecommerce site has been losing organic traffic/ranks for the past 12 months. I don't have any active seo campaigns. after using link detox tool and submitting a disavow file for low quality links to google about 8 months ago, site has picked up some traffic may be about 10% but after few months it started to lose traffic again. there is no manual penalty on site. I would appreciate any and all suggestions at this point to help gain some traffic/traction. Anything that would point us in the right direction would be very helpful.
here is my url http://goo.gl/udynRR
thank you

On top of Dana's answer, it's worth looking here - http://moz.com/google-algorithm-change - to see if your traffic started dropping again after any particular updates.

You are very welcome Rick. Thanks for providing more details. Has your site experienced any other changes since the beginning of the year? I can see by looking at it in the free tools at http://ahrefs.com that you started the year with a lot of inbound links and many of those have been cleared out (most likely from Google algo) over the course of this year. Did you replatform the site, change URLs and/or change the architecture of the site since the beginning of the year?
Are you monitoring your Google Webmaster Tools account? There may be some clues there regarding potential site errors (503, 403 and 404 status codes) and duplicate content that could be getting in your own way.
Let me know. A thorough site audit would most likely get you some answers and give you some directions on where to focus your efforts to regain traffic.

Dear Dana,
Thank you for your reply. Basically the keyword phrase traffic is going down, our high ranking keywords are not ranking any longer, 2 or 3 phrase keywords have lost ranks one by one, dropped from 1st page positions to 2nd, 3rd and 4th page positions within this year. they were the main source of traffic and conversions for a long time (past 4 years) . they are still ranking on those 3rd and 4th pages but not getting any traffic through them anymore. We had quite a few of those high traffic / high volume keywords ranking top 10 positions and now we have only few left on top 10.
If you would please help us understand and guide us in the right direction on how to get those keywords and phrases ranking on top again and also rank for other keywords in our industry. We are actually looking for a professional help such as yourself who could work with us and help us recover our traffic.
Thank you

Hi Rick,
Have you identified which channels specifically are losing traffic, or is it everything equally across the board? The answer to that question would be crucial to evaluating things further. Can you let us know more details? The numbers don't have to be real, but perhaps percentages like direct traffic is down by 30% and referral traffic is down 20%, etc. Let me know and we can investigate deeper. Cheers,
Dana

Odd one - dropping positions but traffic improving
Seem to have a bit of an odd one. For the last few months been running a backlink campaign for a 2/3 year old site, got good positions for some keywords/pages but seems to have plateaued the last 60 days or so with some keywords dropping in position.

The odd thing is traffic seems to be still improving (according to GA and GSC). I am wondering if - have hit a niche ceiling
or rankbrain type thing i.e. google trying to work out what the site should be ranking for and messing with positions.
or because it is just a newish site. Any ideas?2 -
Can bad traffic by association ever be a good thing?
Back in May, my client's website www.mfcomm.co.uk was hacked. Pages were added to the site which instantly received backlinks & traffic. The secuirty flaw was plugged & offending pages deleted within the following weeks. I also created 301 redirects for the most popular pages because the domain appeared to be affected by the increase in 404 errors. Reviewing stats & Moz reports, I notice fresh backlinks - one from http://forum.kolodec.info/. By association to the spurious page that was created as part of the security breach, should I distance the domain with any traffic from all referring sites? Reviewing http://forum.kolodec.info/ in Open Site Explorer it only gets spam score = 4 So my question is, should I count all traffic by association as bad traffic & blacklist the domain or be more lenient? More the point, what would Google think? Regards, Terry

Zemanta for Links and Traffic
Has anyone used Zemanta for their clients. Would appreciate feedback on their service. What got our attention was the sales guy using Rand's testimonial below in their email signature. _"I'm not just a fan, I'm a believer — Zemanta is a remarkable way to build great links." _

Any ideas why organic traffic seems to have hit a plateau?
I run an eCommerce store and have a decent number of quality links pointing to it(which is still growing). It's been 6 months since I started it, and I'm getting between 100-120 organic visits per day right now. I've had a few more quality guest post/infographic links, and I'm also focusing on optimizing individual pages, but my traffic still seems to have plateaued. I'm beginning to doubt that more links is the answer. All of my content is unique(no manufacturer descriptions) and I'm still being outranked by sites that have spammier link profiles and copy/paste descriptions. Any thoughts?

What do you when the wrong site links to you?
In doing research of our backlink profile, I've found a couple dozen of links from off-topic websites linking to us. You see, our domain is Voices.com and tends to scoop up links from unrelated sites that are clearly trying to link to another site such as evp-voices.com or areavoices.com or dozens of others. What would you do? Ask the webmaster to remove them because they are completely unrelated? Or would you keep them if you believed they aren't causing any harm?

Is traffic useful without links?
We have many articles on our sites that bring in a large volume of traffic but bring no links. As an example we wrote an article about the hottest cities in the world. The article brings in over 1000 hits a month on Google and people spend an average of 4 minutes on the page and never return and never link to it. The article also doesn't bring in business because the company sell Air Conditioning. From an SEO point of view should we focus any time at all on writing articles that are useful for the internet community that bring in traffic but don't bring in many (any) links?

How long does it typically take to see a boost in traffic after a strong increase in links?
Suppose you have had a great month of linkbuilding and significantly increased the number of linking domains (say by about 10%). How long does it typically take to see a noticeable uptick in traffic based on your experience?
