Strange Traffic / Viewed content in Analytics
-
Hi
Im looking at the content viewed in December for a clients site and there's a high number of page views for some non-existent pages which received multiple hits eg. domain.com/dr-capability/ with 241 page views (54 unique page views)
How can you have multiple page views (and many unique page views) for pages that don't exist ?
Is it possible page is being generated automatically or something ? if so how come ?
Any ideas as to whats causing this much appreciated ?
All Best
Dan
ps - also many above average home page views

Sorry for the delay.
Did you check if the pages where linked from your site? Sometimes, automated scrapers test for pages that actually are not linked from anywhere. It could be the results of Google trying to "discover" (I've seen that before and is not uncommon at all), or a possible attack attempt.
Steps I'd recommend to follow:
- Check if those pages have links from any other pages around your site or external (use GWT and/or OSE).
- If there are links in your site, remove them.
- If there are extrenal links to those pages, consider taking advantage of those pages Perhaps someone misspelled an URL when linking to the site and you are loosing that juice throwing a 404, consider a 301 to the best match or building a new page using that URL to leverage from that juice.
- Make sure all your plugins and files are up to date (if a CMS) or have the site checked by an expert in web security to mitigate any possible backdoor (services like cloudflare can help).
Hope that helps Dan!

Did you check if those pages actually return a 404 error?

Strange 404 Pages Appearing in Google Analytics
Hi, My client has some strange urls appearing in GA which lead to error pages. Please see the following image: https://imgur.com/a/6TPO8yL e.g URLs like /h/6445738.html I've used screaming frog to see if these pages exist on the website and I can't find them, anywhere. Therefore how are they coming up in GA? If anyone could please help I'd really appreciate it.

Metadata and duplicate content issues
Hi there: I'm seeing a steady decline in organic traffic, but at the same time and increase in pageviews and direct traffic. My site has about 3,000 crawl errors!! Errors are duplicate content, missing description tags, and description too long. Most of these issues are related to events that are being imported from Google calendars via ical and the pages created from these events. Should we block calendar events from being crawled by using the disallow directive in the robots.txt file? Here's the site: https://www.landmarkschool.org/

Filter staff IP address in Analytics
Hi, I'm trying to filter staff visits from Analytics on a new view. IT have given me an IP address range and I have found the following advice: "For an IP address range, you’ll have to select Custom Filters, then choose Exclude, and IP Address from the dropdown list. Then, enter a regular expression for the IP Address" If this is correct, how do I write the IP address range 1xx.xxx.xxx.160 - 1xx.xxx.xxx.223 in RegEx? Thanks

How do you setup a test analytics account?
I have created a test view but that is not helping with skewed data. Do you all just create a total separate profile with a different GA account for a non-indexed domain? How can I test tag manager and other things without messing with our data? I have our IP filtered out so it doesn't show up in reports but other event tags from outsiders will.

Will 301 redirects (Same Domain) show as referral traffic in Analytics?
For an eCommerce site we have 301'd legacy product pages to new product pages. Is all that traffic going to show up as referral traffic from our own domain in Google Analytics? If so, is there any way to preserve original source/medium info or will all the source/medium info be our own domain since there is a 301 redirect?

Google Analytics data - Canonical problems?
Hi everyone, We're trying to determine why Google Analytics is showing multiple versions of the same page as having "landing page traffic". For instance, these 2 pages are both shown as landing pages in GA: www.oursite.com/product_page
Reporting & Analytics | | darkgreenguy
www.oursite.com/product_page/ This occurs many times in Google analytics. Also, there are instances such as these: www.oursite.com/index.php/custom_product_url www.oursite.com/custom_product_url I can't find anything in Google Webmaster tools that would indicate a problem. However, this GA data is making me think there are duplicate content issues on the site... Thanks in advance for any help...0
