What is the best way to refresh a webpage of a news site, SEO wise?

Hello all,
we have a client which is a sports website. In fact it is a veyr big website and has a huge number of news per day.
This is mostly the reason why it refreshes some of its pages with news list every 420 seconds.
We currently use meta refresh. I have read here and elsewhere that meta refreshes should be avoided. But we don't do it to send to another page and pass any kind of page authority / juice.
Is in this case javascript refresh better? Is there any other better way.
What do you think & suggest?

I don't necessarily disagree with Eric's answer, but I wanted to answer from a different point of view. I'm going to assume you really want or need some refresh mechanism built into the page.
In which case I'd agree that a Javascript approach using AJAX is probably a better solution. It will mean that users only need to load the new article headlines, and not the whole page, so the strain on your servers should be reduced. Furthermore, I find it a neater solution all around anyway - you could provide a notice 'new headlines available' that people click to refresh the articles list. This might be the best of both worlds?
Either way, meta refresh isn't as flexible, isn't as clean, and will put more strain on your servers.

I don't understand why you believe you need to add a refresh on the page. Even though you are posting new content on the page, there is no need to refresh the page. Users will refresh the page themselves, or they will just come to the page and see the updated content. The search engines will naturally know that the site contains new content: they will see that you have added fresh content on the site (new news items) and will come back.
I would not include any sort of refresh on the page. You might include a message on the page to tell users to refresh the page for the latest content, but that's all I would do. I do not recommend any auto-refresh.

Best way to link to multiple location pages
I am a Magician and have multiple location pages for each county I cover. I currently have them linked off the menu under locations/ <county>and also in the footer</county> However I have heard that a link from the page is much stronger, so I am experimenting with removing the Menu & Footer link and just linking to these pages from within the content. It's not really a navigation item and most people come in through search to the right page. Am I diluting the link by having it in the Menu/Page and Footer? One website I manage wants to redirect users to state specific pages based on their location. What is the best way to accomplish this? For example a user enters the through site.com but they are in Colorado so we want to direct them to site.com/colorado.

Best & easiest way to 301 redirect on IIS
Hi all, What is the best and easiest way to 301 redirect URLs on IIS server? I got access to the FTP and WordPress back office, but no access to the server admin. Is there an easy way to create 301 redirect without having to always annoy the tech in charge of the server? Thanks!

Staging site and "live" site have both been indexed by Google
While creating a site we forgot to password protect the staging site while it was being built. Now that the site has been moved to the new domain, it has come to my attention that both the staging site (site.staging.com) and the "live" site (site.com) are both being indexed. What is the best way to solve this problem? I was thinking about adding a 301 redirect from the staging site to the live site via HTACCESS. Any recommendations?

Way to spider Wordpress site
I have an old Wordpress site and I want to move it to a new server and take it off Wordpress (too many hacks). I am trying to spider the site so as to get static, non-Wordpress, pages. I am having trouble doing this. When I spider the site, it changes the URLs. For instance, if the URL is www.domain.com/page/ the URL I get out of the spider is /page/index.html And those are not the URLs in the search engine indices. There are about 2000 pages on this site, so it is not feasible to set up 301 redirects. I tried using these spidering programs: WinHTTack Website Copier and PageNest Does anyone know of another method of turning a Wordpress site into a non Wordpress site?

Does the use of sliders for text-on-page, effects SEO in any way?
The concept of using text sliders in an e-commerce site as a solution to placing SEO text above or in between product and high on ages, seems too good to be true.... or is it? How would a text slider for FAQ or other on-page text done with sliding paragraphs (similar but not this specific code- http://demo.tutorialzine.com/2010/08/dynamic-faq-jquery-yql-google-docs/faq.html) might effect text-on-page SEO. Delete old site but redirect domain to a new domain and site
I just have a quick query and I have a feeling about what the answer is so just wanted to see what you guys thought... Basically I am working on a client site. This client has a few other websites that are divisions of their company. However these divisions/websites are no longer used. They are wanting to delete the websites but redirect the domains to their name main website. They believe this will pass on SEO benefits as these old division sites are old and have a good PR and history. I'm unsure for DEFINITE, which way is correct?
