Cannot work out why a bunch of urls are giving a 404 error
-
I have used the Crawl Diagnostic reports to greatly reduce the number of 404 errors but there is a bunch of 16 urls that were all published on the same date and have the same referrer url but I cannot see the woood for trees as to what is causing the error.
**The 404 error links have the structure:**http://www.domainname.com/category/thiscategory/page/thiscategory/this-is-a-post
The referrer structure is:
http://www.domainname.com/category/thiscategory/page/2/
Any suggestions as to how to unravel this would be appreciated.

Hi
I put it on the back burner for a while. This morning i had another go and I think it was caused by shortcodes for accordion style links put in a long time ago by someone else. I've taken the shortcode out and will see if things have improved on the next report.

Thank you for responding. I will follow that lead.
As the error happended on the same day I think if I find one I will have all sorted.

Hard to say without looking at the actual page, but it looks like http://www.domainname.com/category/thiscategory/page/2/ is probably a paginated category page (when you're in a category, and looking through older posts). There is probably a relative link somewhere on the page ( vs ), that is causing the link to be malformed. So take a look at the category template, and replace any relative paths on those pages.

404 issues
Hello, Some time ago, something like a month and a half) I have removed all 404 errors from the google index and the webmaster tools have removed them already, however yesterday moz found the same 404 errors that i have removed from indexing (tose pages are deleted or redirected by the site developer). What could be an issue here and why webmaster tools are not registering those 404 errors but moz analytics does. And the other question is if those pages do not exist can i track where the placed? I tried dowloading moz crawl test, but the refering source was not provided. I would highly appreciate anyones help. Thank you

URL Structure
I'm going through the process of redesigning our website, and the URL structure was brought up. We currently have our URLs structured as domain.com/keyword. It seems that some people think setting your URLs up to look like: domain.com/directory/keyword makes more sense from a user's perspective, and from a search engine's perspective. With our directories labeled as services, solutions, clients - I see no value in adding directories as it dilutes the keyword and brings the keyword further away from the domain. Are there situations where adding a directory before the page in the URL makes sense? If anyone has data showing the difference between the two that'd be great! Thanks, Brian

Hi, The Crawl Diagnostic section of my campaign reporting is displaying 406 error code on almost all the pdf files of my website. But I can access them normally and there is no problem while doing so. Then, why this error status code? Regards, Shailendra Sial

How much of a hit to changing urls?
Hi, We have a few pages that from an SEO perspective have poor URLs. We are planning on changing them (and 301 redirecting) the old page to the new page. I heard in the past, this can temporarily negatively impact your SERP rank etc. Since the old URLs are bad, even if there is a temporary negative hit, changing them in the long run it is better, but curious if anyone has any experience on what to expect.
