Are we designers at heart?
-
A thought has crossed me. I've started to think about my relationships (uh oh...where is this going..?) with my web developer and designer and it seems design has become the core part of every SEO strategy I employ.
Every page layout, rich content on a page and behaviour my customer might do, I'm thinking about the design. Are we in a way, designers as well? We put on so many hats and is design one of them? I'm technical with my web developer but I'm also concerned with the delivery the customer sees.
How is your relationship with your web designer and developer? Are they core individuals in your SEO life?
-
If you are a smaller firm and you wear all the hats, here are instructions on how to give yourself a hug (yes--real instructions).
-
My approach is thumbs up with a smile. Universal and makes everyone feel epic! Including myself
-
did you get him a box of chocolates ? more on topic yes but SEO has always been a trade of many hats and im sure we will gain many more (e.g PR). It never hurts to be super best friends with the designer and web dev team. It can also be great o get advice on things e.g i may look at a site with my seo hat but miss an important design issue or web dev issue etc.
in short : Go give your web dev team a hug / high five depending on how comfortable you are with them.

Confirm responsive design is accessible to crawlers?
Trying to ensure crawlers can access all important info on a new responsive website, but it's javascript-heavy. Following Google's advice/best practices, but can't get the Fetch and Render tool to confirm it's working. Anyone dealt with this before? What Are The Hazards to Changing Over to Responsive Web Design?
We have recently re-programmed our website to Responsive Web Design. All the URLs have remained the same, all the content is unchanged. We have this new version sitting on a development server and are finding ourselves hesitant to make the changeover. Our rankings are great currently, and our question is whether or not there are any risks that we will incur by making this change. We would appreciate any advice on how to implement this change safely. Or if that's it's even possible to insure that there won't be ranking losses.

How to judge a good website designer?
I am looking into hiring a company to redesign my website. What tips can someone give me about how to judge whether a company is good or not? I am most interested in the website being designed to work well with SEO and crawls. Do I compare the rankings of the websites they have in their portfolio? I'm so petrified that I'm going to make the wrong choice.

Footer Links for Design Shops - Do They Help or Hurt?
I work on SEO for a number of clients at our agency, including our in-house SEO for our own website. I use Open Site Explorer all the time to analyze my competition in the SERPs and try to gain links from this insight. However, I've noticed a number of agencies and design shops that place a link in the footer of websites they've designed and created. For example "Site design by ABC Agency (hyperlinked to the agency's home page). Or I've seen small logos or graphics that link to the designer's site and use the "alt tag" to get stronger anchor text. From a design perspective, I don't care for this, but as a SEO...I can see why. We've designed a number of websites and have more in the pipeline, but have not used this tactic before. It seems like an irrelevant link from a content/user standpoint, however, it seems to work for a lot of agencies and design shops. Any input from the SEOmoz community would be great. Is it a short-lived strategy? Does it help or hurt your link-building and "rapport" with Google, Bing, Yahoo? Thanks everyone.

Products page design | e-commerce
Hi All, We are redesiging our ecommerce site and product page is bothering us. We want to tidy up. We want to hide some of the description with jquery script. Visitor will be able to view first 30 words and there will be a "read more" text link just after that content. If they want to read more (which we think most will do) they will have to click the text link and rest of the content will slide open in the same page. The whole content is visible from source code. Would this be ok as far as Google and SEO concerned? I hope I explained it well 🙂
