What offline signals affect SERPS?
-
A journalist contact of mine was asking whether we were getting close to the point where 'developers' (for which I read Google) can take account of opinions/interests/actions of people who don't use the Internet (the example I was give was 'poor' people and 'rich' people).
This got me thinking about what (if any) offline signals that Google/Bing etc. use as signals for ranking. I understand that some household demographic data may be used for ad targeting (I think I read that Axciom do that) - but are there any others?
-
That's one of the things I was wondering about Nick - how much other (i.e. non-browsing behaviour type) personal information does Google et al gather?
Another type of information is things like the UK Companies House maintains information of registered companies (including registered office address etc.) - could that be useful for local ranking? (BTW I'm not sure Companies House info is relevant, but there may be other sources that are).
-
That said, isn't it down to travel companies to decide what is the best product for certain budgets? Although the concept is interesting, I can only think that Google places answers the post code question. If it were to go further it would need to obtain personal data about the user entering a search query so It can truly match relevant results and i'm just not sure people would be comfortable with that.
-
@Dejan SEO, not sure if using offline data would go against Google's 'philosphoy'. I guess there are (at least) two categories of 'offline' information that would be relevant: things that are truly offline (for which an entirely new 'parser' would be required) and things that can be imported and correlated with online data.
I think the postcode example is a good one - if I live on a particularly poor neighbourhood and do a search for 'where can I get a good family holiday to suit my budget' or something like that, a 'better' result for me might be different to someone living in an affluent area...and Google does say it wants to give the 'best' or most appropriate answer doesn't it?
How to turn that idea into something actionable for SEO? Well, I'll leave that to someone cleverer than me!
@digna99 no, please online ID cards!?!
-
If they are not doing it now, they will be soon I am sure. Why? Since it would be great for business.
I have little doubt that discount travel companies utilize the offline data to signal what type of deal they may offer your or accept.
Depending on what Zip code you are in, or if you use a regular bank card or Platinum American Express to pay.
This will no doubt translate to individual user results via search engines.
This question also got me thinking about the potential of an "Online ID Card" or license to surf the web. While I hate the idea, it would lessen the problems for anti-piracy groups and crime (tracing IP's and proving who did what etc), and would be a marketers dream know exactly who was doing what on the internet.
It would certainly ruin much of what makes the internet great, but it would bring some type order to it for government and corporations.
Sorry I mentioned it.
-
None to my knowledge. Wouldn't loading of offline data into algorithm go against Google's whole philosophy?
What an interesting topic!

Getting indexed in Google Scholar
Hi all! We have a client who publishes scholarly research as a highly regarded non-profit. Their Publications aren't being indexed in Google Scholar 50% of the time and when they are, Google is pulling random stuff from a PDF vs. from the html page. Any advice on best practices is enormously appreciated

Google showing different links in SERPs
Google search results are showing my site links in both URLs, "mydomain.com" and "https://mydomain.com". However the one with https is showing a favicon, and the other one is not. So i wanna keep the https one and remove the other one. I went to GSC to submit "mydomain.com" for removal and it said that URL will be deleted in ALL of its variations. So how do i delete the "mydomain.com" links? Should i just index the ones with https again? Would that work? Someone suggested me to do 301 redirect on all pages that are being displayed twice. But i am not sure if i need to do that since i am using squarespace, and both of the links lead to the same page?

Google Fetch and Render - Partial result (resources temporarily unavailable)
Over the past few weeks, my website pages have been showing as partial in the Google Search Console. There are many resources/ files (js, css, images) that are 'temporarily unreachable'. The website files haven't had any structural changes for about 2 years (it historically has always shows as 'completed' and rendered absolutely fine in the search console). I have checked and the robots.txt is fine as is the sitemap. My host hasn't been very helpful, but has confirmed there are no server issues. My website rankings have now dropped which I think is due to these resources issues and I need to clear this issue up asap - can any one here offer any assistance? It would be hugely appreciated. Thanks, Dan

Getting indexed by Google scholar
Often my Google Scholar alerts result in exactly what I think they will: scholarly articles published in academic journals. However, today I got this completely non-scholarly article https://www.t-nation.com/training/the-exact-reps-that-make-you-grow and I have no idea why Google Scholar is indexing this site. I've read up on how to get indexed by Google Scholar, and this website doesn't seem to have the necessary requirements. I'm curious for anyone whose clients or industry need to get indexed by Google Scholar, what has worked for you?

Why rich snippets have disappeared in Google search results ?
Hello, Few weeks ago, we have implemented a snippets strategy in order to increase our ranking for our blog posts. That was successful and our results were showing up in Google. But today, every single snippet has disappeared. We go back to a simple search result, without snippets for us or for our competitors. It seems that Google has delete rich snippet for specific keywords because for the generic keywords (for exemple "inbound marketing definition" in our case), there is still a snippet result. Do you know if Google has changed snippets parameters for keywords with low search volume ? Thank you !

Sitelink (meta) descriptions in Google SERP
Hi, I am probably not the only one having this question regarding the quality of sitelinks in organic results. When your search returns sitelinks, I know the only thing you can do to avoid certain sitelinks to appear is to demote it for that search result. But what can you do about the description. For the main result you are pretty much able to create an appealing description, but when the sitelinks appear, all sitelinks display these crappy 'composed' descriptions. I've read Google did some tests a couple of years ago with multiple descriptions and multiple titles, but this doesn't cover the issue I just described. Is there a way to create 'sitelink descriptions'? Thanks in advance for your thoughts.
