Small Business website help please. All help is appreciated and thank you in advance.

Hello I am working on my families website, it is a Colorado barn construction site.
I am new here, so any and all help is appreciated. I have already gotten some excellent tips for general seo, but now trying to pinpoint in on a target.
I am reading as much as I can everyday.
My questions are:
Keywords... Ok so when I type in keywords and the results come up, even with an exact match, I am 12 pages back. So what influences the keyword rankings? Is it best to add in like say a service into a paragraph? Like I have been using Ubersuggest or however its spelled, and so would you take keyword phrases and then try to naturally add them to paragraphs? Is this how rankings are created? Thus your site being found? I have major competition that does not even have the keywords I type in, found on there site, and they still rank #1. So I feel that it must lead into my next question DA.
Domain Authority: I assume domain authority comes into play. The leading company in my world has a 50 and I have a 15. I am trying to raise this, and using the Moz tools I see my competitor has like 400 edu links. So in some ways it seems like wow get as many edu links as possible. But now it seems like this is not good? Like everyone is afraid to get links that may be considered spam in nature. That being said, would you still go after edu links?
Media: So kind of an odd question, but does adding a video to a home page help bounce rates? Like maybe if they sit and watch a two minute video that is interesting, then they may check out the rest of the site? Or for the sake of load times, do you keep the homepage as fast as possible?
Thank you for any tips. Also if you view my site, please give me any negative feedback as you can to help me improve.
Thank you
Chris

Although this could help us read the code, I'd say it's pretty low on the priority list as far as where to spend time/energy. The site is WordPress, so unless they recode the theme or get a developer to do it, it's going to have to be compressed code.
There are many tools which can aid the process of evaluating a site's code;
- http://www.browseo.net/
- fetch as Google - https://support.google.com/webmasters/answer/158587?hl=en
- a header checker like - http://urivalet.com/
- plugins like the MozBar - http://moz.com/tools/seo-toolbar
-
Hi Chris
For keyword targeting information I would look specifically to these resources;
- http://moz.com/blog/visual-guide-to-keyword-targeting-onpage-optimization
- http://moz.com/blog/keyword-targeting-density-and-cannibalization-whiteboard-friday
Think of a page as having a central topic which is the page's purpose. Then make that page fulfill that purpose as best as possible. So if it's Colorado Barn Construction - what is a person who types that into Google looking for? And give it to them.
Link building - I would go after links that;
- Can also get you referral traffic
- Are on pages that rank for keywords in Google
- Have good engagement, like comments and social shares
- Are relevant (at least loosely) to your industry
- Are not on sites that were obviously built for links (like blogs which accept any writer, blogs that don't focus on just a few niche topics)
- I would stop using exact anchors like "colorado barn construction" to create links (see your question)
I would go after EDU links if they fit the criteria above.
Some link building resources;
- http://pointblankseo.com/link-building-strategies
- http://www.linkbuildingbook.com/link-building-resources.html
A video can definitely help engagement - but add a video if you would add a video and knew nothing about SEO. In other words, add a video because it's the best thing to have on that page and don't worry about the SEO implications.
A great resource on how to rank in general;
Also the periodic table of ranking factors will give you a good overview of all the factors;

Good morning Chris! I went and looked in IE. There it is not a single line, but it is a solid block of code that is not really readable by humans. It needs spaces in the code.
Do a "View Source" at my site EasyDigging.com, or even here on this Moz page, to see how code should be displayed for humans to easily read it (and look for problems and give suggestions)
Wordpress is easy to create with, but has it's own special challenges for SEO. Are you using any of the SEO plug-ins for Wordpress, like Yoast?
-
It seems fine to me in IE, but in Firefox it is one line. I am my own webmaster and it's just wordpress.
-
It would help everybody help you with SEO questions if we could read your site code easily. Right now the code is compressed into one long continuous line of code. That saves a little file space, but makes it almost impossible for humans to read.
If you go to most webpages, right click in a blank area, and select "View Source" you will get a screen showing the code displayed as one item per line, with hundreds of lines. This lets humans easily look for things that are important for SEO. Your webmaster likely has the code this way already on their own computer, but has been making and uploading a compressed version to webhost. Ask him to upload the uncompressed version of important pages.
Other than that, you should hire the service of someone skilled in doing LOCAL SEO - that does not mean some guy who lives in the same area you do. It's a special sort of SEO procedure that is quite different from those of us with a national or worldwide customer base.
You can probably do quite well by spending a reasonable amount with Google Adwords (PPC ads) if you set your ads to display only in the regions you serve.
Also do you have Google Webmaster Tools and Google Analytics set up for your site? Those will be valuable.
-
Based on your questions I believe reading the guide Andy mentioned is definitely where you should start.
Do you build barns everywhere in Colorado or just a specific area within the state? If you only do a limited area, you should be focused on local SEO which different. Here is a post I put together curating some awesome local SEO learning resources. http://www.stellarseo.org/blog/local-seo-guide/
If you let me know about the area you are targeting with your services, I will be able to give you more specific advice.
-
Hi Chris,
Without wishing for it to sound like I am avoiding answering your questions, one of the best things you could do is read the MOZ Beginners Guide to SEO. You will find this is the best resource to start learning from and chock full of everything you will need to know.
I hope it helps,
-Andy

Newbie Question about the first steps of website SEO
Hello. I'm new to Moz and know very little about SEO. I just finished going through the Beginner's Guide to SEO and I'm ready to take action. I plan on doing the SEO work myself. The guide says before doing keyword research, I should first answer certain questions about my business, such as: What types of my product are people searching for? Who is searching for these terms? When are people searching for these terms? How are people searching for my product? There are several more. How do I go about finding the answers to these questions? Thank you in advance.

Help writing a particular URL slug
Hello, I work for an Theater news site. We've drafted an interview piece where three actors (Lin-Manuel Miranda, Leslie Odom, Jr, and Karen Olivo) discuss their participation in an upcoming show (tick, tick... BOOM), which is an autobiographical precursor to Jonathan Larson's hit Broadway musical, Rent. The show is playing for five days in the New York City Center's 'Encores' musical theater series event. In the interview, the actors widely discuss Mr. Larson's impact on the theater community, who passed away suddenly in 2001. As you might imagine, the most popular keywords on Google trends are of Mr. Larson, the show name, and Lin-Manuel Miranda, a tony-winning composer. We're considering slugs that represent several permutations of the above actor + show combinations (below), but we're struggling trying to balance a slug that appropriately explains the article, uses appropriate keywords, and limit them (to a count of 5, per google's recommendation). Any suggestions? miranda-olivo-odom-inside-tick-tick-boomlin-manuel-olivo-odom-inside-tick-tick-boomtick-tick-boom-encores-interviewjonathan-larson-tick-tick-boom-at-encores

Does combining keywords in the page title help or hurt you?
I am working on a site which sells elliptical equipment. I used Google Adwords to determine number of searches on the following keywords: Elliptical trainer – 3.,600 searches Elliptical machine – 14,800 searches Elliptical trainer machine - 22 searches I am currently optimizing “elliptical trainer” – but after seeing results above would also like to optimize “elliptical machine”. My question is: if I add “machine” to “elliptical trainer” will Google now only read “elliptical trainer machine” or will it read “elliptical machine” in addition to “elliptical trainer”. How do you know what word or “chunk” of words Google picks up?

How to Choose the Best Keywords for a Website
I am working with an insurance agency that wants to target the below types of insurance in Dalton GA, Ringold GA, Chattanooga TN and and/or Georgia. Home Insurance
Keyword Research | | lagunaitech
Auto Insurance
Health Insurance
Life Insurance
Restaurant Insurance
Contractor Insurance They are a new agency that doesn't have a website yet and only a small online marketing budget. Right now, I'm starting to work with them on their new site and want to make sure the on-site SEO works with the insurance/locations they want to target. What I'm having trouble with is the volume of monthly searches and trying to find keywords that they could realistically get some traffic and leads from. Most of the keywords I check with the Adwords tool are less than 50 exact match searches or just show a dash. The only keywords with a decent amount of exact searches are the main insurance types like "restaurant insurance" or "home insurance Georgia". How can I get an idea of the number of leads and amount of traffic this site might get when most of the keywords searched for only a handful of times per month? I can build the site to easily target all the above types of insurance in Dalton, GA, which has a population of about 33,000, but I don't know what kind of results this agency might expect if they were to rank in the top 3 spots. Thanks in advance for any ideas or advice!0 -

Please help with SEO keyword research
Hi Moz community, I would like to request your collective wisdom. I'm new to SEO and putting together an SEO research and strategy document for the employment service I work for. Have solid skills in Google Adwords and have ran a campaign over the last two years with excellent results. But this SEO thing is a whole new world! That's why who better to turn to than the leading community for SEO professionals? 🙂 Any support, advice, tips would be most welcomed appreciated. It's an employment service and I've got a list of keywords. For example, here are some of the action words I thought could be useful: <colgroup><col width="215"> <col width="91"> <col width="65"></colgroup> [find staff] 0.79 73 [find employees] 0.97 73 [looking for staff] 0.94 58 [looking for staff] 0.94 58 [staff wanted] 0.62 58 [looking for employees] 0.94 46 [look for work] 0.77 36 [looking for workers] 0.93 36 [find workers] 0.91 36 [employee search] 0.72 28 [staff search] 0.37 28 [find an employee] 0.79 22 [search for employees] 0.71 12 [find a worker] 0.66 12 [how to find employees] 0.71 12 My questions: Where to from here? If this was a Google Adwords campaign I would place the words in, create ad copy and test response. But with SEO, are these words useful? Can you target all of these words with SEO - or am I better finding words with higher volume? How many words should I be looking to target? For example, am I only trying to find the 5 or 10 highest volume words, or is it important to target lots of words with SEO? Is it just one set of keywords per page, or can I target all the above keywords on one page? I'm a bit lost. Thanks in advance for your consideration.

Is the all in title technique helpful?
I watched a tutorial on lynda.com about keyword research. And they said to use the All In Tittle trick to see how many pages on google are optimized for that keyword - do you reccommend using that method as well? In google, you type allintitle:"key word phrase" and the results show how many page titles are optimized for that phrase. Should I use this technique as well when choosing keywords?
