Spike in Direct visits with Drop in Google Organic Visits

Does anyone have an explanation for why Google organic visits plummeted while direct visits rose the same amount. Total visits have been very normal.

I'm really glad I found your question/post. I'm looking at a similar scenario in which there has been a major uptick on 3/11/14 for Direct Traffic (and similarly, a slight drop in Organic). We also have a phone tracking system that works with Cookies to display a certain telephone number based on the web referral that is reporting a similar anomaly. Many of our customers are a little "old school" and still use Internet Explorer to browse our website (about 50% of the users) and I noticed that, more than any other browser, IE showed the greatest transparency between the spike in Direct and the drop in Organic - all coinciding with a specific date: 3/11/2014 (see below).
It's also interesting to note that Google Webmaster Tools launched their Index Status Tool update on 3/9/14. I've always been under the impression that Google Analytics tracked both http and https traffic together, but since the update to the GWT tool, is it possible that the traffic was tracked as Direct rather than Organic (it's sad to say, but yes, we just recently noticed that Google had indexed both http and https versions of our website by (our) mistake, so, who knows...).
I also noticed that Microsoft had issued Vulnerability reports for that specific date as well - and one of the main technologies they listed as "effected" was Internet Explorer. So.... lots of detective work, but I do like the checklist that Paul Thompson had put together for you. Very helpful indeed!

This is clearly a case of organic traffic being misclassified as direct, since total traffic is unchanged and the drop in organic happens exactly at the same time as the uptick in direct.
Since direct traffic is specifically visits for which no referrer has been captured, it means something's changed to cause the referrer to be stripped out or not set on the majority of your organic visits.
There's a looong list of the kinds of things that can cause this, such as:
- during http to https redirect (or vice versa) the referrer may not be passed (this is the first thing I'd check)
- incorrect subdomain or cross-domain tracking can strip the referrer.
- 302 redirects sometimes caused the referrer to be dropped
- problems with cookies being lost/corrupted. (this will often show as a major shift in pages/visit)
- javascript missing from certain entry pages (means any further page view looks like a direct)
- changes to PPC tracking. If you were getting lots of paid search traffic that wasn't tagged, it will look like organic. If incorrect/broken tagging is then added, it will look like direct traffic
Bottom line is, something has changed that is affecting the collection of referrer data. It's gonna take some serious detective work to figure out what, because these can often be changes that wouldn't - at first glance - appear to have anything to do with Analytics. (This is why I try to push clients so hard to track EVERYTHING they change on a website with a note in the Annotations section of the Analytics account.)
The fact you have a clear date for the occurrence may make things a little easier. Go back through your email from around that date and see if anything there alerts you to any work that was being on the site at the time e.g. SSL or domain renewals, marketing campaigns that used redirects starting or ending, etc. You can also look at the Change History section of the account (under Admin) to see if anything catches your eye.

My first guess would be some sort of reporting error as I'm not sure what would cause such a quick and drastic shift like that. Second, I would check if the entrance/landing pages in analytics are the same or not. Check the related pages to see if anything may have been changed on them to create this. Two of the sites I work on have had some changes over the past few months with respects to organic vs. direct traffic where our organic has slipped a bit more and more but it is turning into direct traffic, but definitely not on the scale of what has happened to you.

If that is what has happened. I'll be honest, I haven't seen something quite like this before, so would just be a fact-finding mission to track the problem down.

I think the better question should have been "Why were Google organic visits suddenly counted as direct visits instead?"

That rules out Page layout.
It does look like a penalty of some sort though. it might be worth checking just to make sure someone hasn't disallowed the whole site from Google in some manner.
Then there is the question of why has traffic increased at the same time as the drop? Do they run a mailing list at all? Have you had a look through the list of referrers to see where this traffic is coming from? Is it all from direct visits, i.e people are typing in the URL?

Thanks for the response Andy. I don't think anything had been changed, the site has been very static for the last few years. The date is January 25th. But total visits have not fluctuated other than seasonably. No Ads on the site.

Are there any ads on the site? What was the exact date of the organic drop? I'm just wondering if perhaps it could have been the Page Layout algorithm update?
Was any work carried out prior to this?

Drop in indexation but increase in organic traffic
We've had a puzzling drop in indexed pages on our ecommerce website. My crawl returns just over 25k items. Until 19/6 we had about 23-24k indexed. Then we experienced a sudden drop from 19/6 to 26/6: from 23,400 to 18,999, losing 4.4k pages from one week to the next. At the same time, our organic traffic has not decreased, it actually increased, however, it's only been a couple of weeks so that may be coincidence. A few things that have happened during the past few weeks: 31/5: we implemented pagination on category pages to avoid issues with duplicate content - could it be that this led to a decrease in indexed pages 3 weeks later? However, I can only find about 1.5k pages in my crawl that are page 2+ 18-19/6: we had some website outages over the weekend; as a B2B business, we don't get much traffic over the weekend, so I can't see an impact to traffic. However, the following week, indexation dropped by another 250 (then stayed the same this past week), so I don't think this was a factor. 21/6: we retired another website and migrated it to our main website. However, all pages were redirected to existing pages so no new pages were created for the migration. This doesn't really explain a decrease in indexation, but may account for some of the increase in organic traffic; however not all as the retired website hardly got any organic traffic. So, should we be worried? As our website is quite large, it would probably be quite difficult to pin point exactly which pages dropped off the index, but a loss of 19% of pages is quite significant. Then again, it doesn't appear to have negatively impacted organic traffic... Have you got any suggestions for what I should be looking at to find out what happened? Should I be worried at this point? I will definitely continue to have an eye on how our organic traffic (and indexation) develops but I am not sure if there is anything I can do at this point. Google Analytics SEO Queries Not Showing
Hi All, This might be a silly question, but for all the properties I monitor in Google Analytics, I'm now showing no data for SEO Queries under Acquisition for the past 6 days. Normally I would expect a few day delay in queries, but nothing for 6 days is somewhat peculiar especially as it was functioning fine prior to November 12th. Google as referring domain
Hi all, a colleague asked a question, which I could not answer (never even noticed this "problem") 😞 When we are logged into our GA account and go the referring domains section, we find Google. I always thought that these visitors came via Google Image Search, but not all of them do. Most of them come via "/imgres", but some come via "/" (always thought that "/" was the homepage?), "/url" and "//" Maybe I am just stupid, but honestly I could not explain what these strings mean... or how these visitors landed on our site... Can you help me???

Google Analytics: Multi channel funnel
Hi 🙂 I have a little problem. In Multi-channel Funnel Overview I see 50 conversions from Paid Search (screenshot 1). But when I click on Assisted Conversion and then choose Paid Search, I see 31 Assisted Conversions and 32 Last Interaction Conversion. (screenshot 2) So my question is - why the number of converstions in overview (50) is different than number in Assisted Conversions (assisted or last interaction conversion, or both together)? Setting up goals in Google Analytics
Hello! This question is seems so obvious that I'm also ashamed to ask... almost. If the goal of a website is to have a visitor complete a contact form, when setting up the Goal in Google Analytics (as a "URL destination") the URL of choice would be the form's thank you page, correct? Because that's the page that proves the visitor completed the task we want them the achieve. Right? Thanks!

X2 Google Analytics affect page rank ?
Hi there, If you had 2 Google Analytics Accounts one to the main site and another to the blog, could this affect the page position in Google? We've suddenly noticed a drop in our KWs and it was shortly after we added another Google Analytics Account. The blog has 68% Bounce rate and the main site has always been about 48%. Google Analytics session update question
Hello, With reference to seomoz blog post - http://www.seomoz.org/blog/panda-24-and-analytics-session-update-rolled-out-simultaneously#jtc151292 , i would like clarification about the following - User searches Google for "Product Name" and clicks on your AdWords advertisement. User leaves site and searches a few more times, click on competition and comparing prices and features. User ultimately decides to with your product, Googles "Your Brand + Product Name", clicks your organic listing, and buys the product. This whole process takes less than 30 minutes. "Your Brand + Product Name" will appear in your organic keyword report with 1 visit. My question is whether "Product Name" will also appear in organic keyword report with 1 visit if the visitor is not signed in. ( as search won't be encrypted ) Thanks

Google Analytics: how many visits from country Google domains?
Hello, I manage a site with visitors from many different countries. With Google Analytics, it is normal to see the number of visitors from each search engine. However, I would like to identify the number of visitors from each Google-search contry domain. How many visitors from Google.com? How many from Google.co.uk. And from Google.co.zm? And so on. Anybody knows if this is possible and if yes, how can it be done? Thank you in advance, Dario
