Page authority still on 1 after url change and 301 redirect
-
Hi Moz analytics suggestion to help ranking is to have a keyword or phrase in the url so I advised a client to do this they changed one of their pages urls, this page previously had a page authority of 26 since the change its gone down to 1.
I advised them that they must do a 301 from the old page but they took a few weeks to do this, would this of affected it why is it not showing up yet its been 3 weeks now, since the 301 and 5 weeks since the url change. -
Well thats the odd thing the links to the old page were returning 404 page not found error so that and the very low page authority led me to believe a 301 redirect was needed
-
From what you've told me it looks like the following-
renamed to
where as a 301 would be good if you had two pages like
then a secondary page was created
you could redirect the first into the second, we you've just renamed the page because of this the 301 is not needed and it is a possibility that it may be causing you a problem as your kind of doing this-
example.com/keyword-yay > 301 > example.com/keyword-yay > 301 > example.com/keyword-yay etc. etc.
the 301 isn't going anywhere but to its own page which is odd!
Wordpress should auto update the pages so if a user comes in for the old link page Wordpress will redirect them to the new one. Having said that if you're not comfortable there is a good plugin - http://wordpress.org/plugins/redirection/

ah right the reason I suggested the 301 to them is after the permalink was changed moz showed its page authority as 1. Will the 301 being on that page do any harm then?
The keyphrase i'm trying to rank them for has a moz keyword difficulty of 44% there domain authority is 29.
Since the tweaks to that page there google ranking has gone from 20 to 23 so its still very low, they were being beaten by sites with lower domain authority, so i thought after the changes to the page they would have done a lot better by now. -
Hi Genkee,
Majestic SEO use a different metric but in short trust flow is the authority. What it means it Majestic is pick it up fine. I suspect Moz is just being slow updating, the page is fine and Google will see the links it's just Roger taking his time.
If you changed the URL (renamed) you shouldn't need a 301. Its a bit like renaming a word document, it will just take a little while for crawlers to work out its a new page title.

I've just checked the pages source code there's not a noindex tag and the rel=canonical points to the page.
I checked the 301 from various 301 site checker tools and its reporting working. The existing url was changed, they use wordpress and it was done using the edit permalink option near the top of the page.
I've just checked Majestic SEO I can't see any option to look at page authority but trust flow is 16 and citation flow is 20

Hi there Genkee,
Here are a few things to can check:
that you've not got a no index tag or a rel=canonical tag pointing somewhere. The 301 is working correctly.
Rather than create a new URL would it not have been easier to change the existing URL and you wouldn't have as many problems. Have you tried looking in any other programmes like Majestic SEO to see if there is some authority with them and Moz is just being a bit slow with updates?
Lastly I know Moz reports take a month have you had a "fresh" monthly report so there has been a full cycle it may update then. If the 301 is working correctly even if Moz doesn't see the authority it is there it may just be going a bit slow.
Hope you find a tip in there that helps.

Is it better to create more pages of content or expand on current pages of content?
I am assuming that one way of improving the rankings of current pages will be to create more content on the keywords used... should this be an expansion of the content on current pages I am optimising for a keyword or is it better to keep creating new pages and if we are creating new pages is it best to use an extension of the keyword on the new page – for example if we are optimising one page for ‘does voltage optimisation work’ would it then be worth creating a page optimised for ‘does voltage optimisation work in hotels’ for example and so on? I am guessing maybe both might help, this is just a question I have had from one of my clients.

Why would changing 404 pages increase traffic by 9%?
Neil Patel claimed in this article that by creating a custom 404 page that links out to 25 to 50 random internal pages on the website, he was able to increase the traffic of Techcrunch by 9%. I'm a bit skeptical about this claim. A couple of questions: Is this theory sound? If you've personally tried this or have read other articles supporting Neil, I'd love to learn more. Would a big site like Techcrunch really have problems with Google not indexing all of its pages? Also, does getting more pages crawled help you get more traffic? Specifically, would it help a site like mine? For reference, my site gets an average of 12,040 pages crawled per day in last 90 days. Currently 28,922 pages have been indexed. Are there any possible downsides to trying this? Thanks!

Redirecting deleted posts 301 vs 302
There is a category on WP where job ads are posted. when a post got deleted I would like to pass 404 error page and redirect all those deleted posts to specific category. I found WP plugin Auto Redirect 404 in 301 for Trashed Posts which does redirect deleted post to specific URL. But posts which are in the trash (not permanently deleted) will get 302 redirects. Those deleted permanently will get 301 redirects. Should I try editing this plugin or find another why? Maybe there is similar way with Redirection plugin?

Redirect both / and non-/ URLs?
I am doing SEO on WP site. Due to some duplicate pages (rel canonical was done before) I am doing 301 redirects at the moment. And I wonder if I need to redirect both links w/ and w/o trailing slash. Default is non www, w/o trailing slash. Like there is .com/category/news but there is same page linked in .com/news (well it works when permalink structure is set to /%category%/%postname% and returns 404 error when structure is set to /%postname%).

I redirected .lt/naujienos to .lt/category/naujienos. Should I also redirect .lt/naujienos/ (with trailing slash)? There's absolutely no problem redirecting this, but there are some more pages which I want to edit their URLs and I wonder If I should do both redirects from links /w and w/o slash?1 -
Old landing page modifications - should I change the content?
One of our most popular landing page is starting to be a little bit out dated, should I keep the old content and update with newer text or is it safe to completely replace the old content with the new content without losing our organic traffic on this page?

Looking for a few hours of consult from an on-page/redirection SEO guru.
Hi! I could post our question here, but I think we will need an hour or so of questions and answers. Anyone consider themselves an on-page guru or redirection strategy guru? Here is the breakdown: 1. We sell digital media. 2. Most of the pages that return for us in the serps are indexed Search Results pages. From the research we have done, these are our highest trafficked results, but also our lowest converters. We have hundreds of thousands of indexed and dynamic Search Result pages we need to deal with. 3. We are concerned about Panda eventually giving us issues with these indexed Search Pages. 4. We would like to 301 re-direct these indexed Search Results pages to applicable product pages. 5. Looking for advice on a strategy to do so which would include the best way to locate the pages we need to 301 in the SERPS, being careful that the 301 will help and not harm us, etc. Note, we are just looking for a couple of hours of discussion and guidance. We don't need a massive SEO analysis or anything. Just looking for input and guidance on this one particular issue. If you just want to answer here for free, hey, we won't complain, but are happy to pay for quality advice. PM if interested. Thanks! Craig
