Short URL's vs Optimised URL's
-
Howdy Mozzers!
What are your thoughts on short URL's vs Optimised URL's. For example if a website currently sells wood furniture and wants to target the keyword "Wood Furniture For Sale", which URL would be preferable:
Short URL: www.domain.com/wood-furniture
Optimised URL: www.domain.com/wood-furniture-for-sale
The website also uses facet navigation and selected attributes are added in a fixed order sequence after the category. For example if Cane is selected as wood type:
Short URL: www.domain.com/wood-furniture/Cane
Optimised URL: www.domain.com/wood-furniture-for-sale/Cane
Which one do you prefer (between the short URL and optimised URL) and why?
Cheers!

Hi Kevin,
Thank you for contributing your thoughts. I think keywords in URL's are useful in two ways
1. They give an indication to users what the page is about
2. They give an indication to search engines what the page is about
Although the keywords "Cane wood furniture for sale" can be used in the Meta Title, H1 tag and onsite content, I don't see any harm in adding them to the URL as an additional indicator, other than the downside of increasing the URL length.
So I suppose it depends on whether google gives more preference to keywords in URL's over their length or vice versa

Man, that sure seems like splitting hairs but I've literally spent days trying to decide the answer to this very question. I personally just try to get into my customer's head and try to figure out what would be the more likely search term. I'm leaning toward the optimized URL simply because if I'm looking to buy wood furniture, I'd be more likely to search for "wood furniture for sale." Then again, you might have custom wood furniture, or antique wood furniture, or maybe you restore or refinish wood furniture.
At the end of this, one is just going to have to go with the URL people might most likely search for. But then that's just the URL. You can mention all of those key words on that page, which should then rank fairly well for wood furniture. After Google works it's magic behind (now) closed doors to see who searches for what and then bounces out of your site, then you'll start ranking organically for the words that get the best results for your mix. If you get the recipe wrong, you'll see it in the SERPs (or not) and you can edit or add to your page later.
My thoughts only.

Number of internal links and passing 'link juice' down to key pages.
Howdy Moz friends. I've just been checking out this post on Moz from 2011 and wanted to know how relevant it is today? I'm particularly interested in a number of links we have on our HP potentially harming important landing page rankings because not enough 'link juice is getting to them i.e) are they are being diluted by all the many other links on the page? (deeper pages, faqs, etc etc) It seems strange to me that as Google as has got more sophisticated this would still be that relevant (thus the reason for posting). Anyway, I thought I was definitely worth asking. If we can leverage more out of our on-page efforts then great 🙂

Disadvantages of Migrating Website to New URL
Hi There, I am currently struggling with the ranking of my website. No matter how many initiatives I try (backlinking, blog commenting, social posting, etc.) I can't seem to make any progression in Google Search. I've done competitive metrics through Open Site Explorer and can't seem to really find the reason why my site is not ranking as well as my competitors. The only one possible glaring element I've thought about is my website URL. This company is in the heating and cooling industry and majority of my competitors have either "heating" or "cooling" or both in their website URL's but mine does not. Does anyone have any thoughts or recommendations on if changing my URL and then redirecting my current URL would be a step in the right direction help me to climb the rankings in Google Search? Thanks!

301 vs. keeping identical URL
Hey everybody! I have a question pertaining to our redesign. The situation is as follows: /drug-rehab/alcohol-withdrawal-los-angeles gets a decent amount of views on out website, and we would like it to be on our redesigned site. I was curious what impact, if any, I would see given the two scenarios below. 301 to /alcohol-withdrawal make the new page /drug-rehab/alcohol-withdrawal-los-angeles as well The second situation is that there are a serious of other pages which don't seem to be of drastic benefit, which I don't feel NEED to be on the website. For example: /post-acute-alcohol-withdrawal-treatment/drug-los-angeles /rehabs-resources/drug-abuse/sub-acute-alcohol-withdrawal etc It appears to me that the content on these pages is rather similar, and I feel like they don't really say anything special. Can I 301 them to the new page? Should I let them die in the black hat inferno they were made in? Any thoughts are greatly appreciated! Thanks guys!

Microsoft SEO Toolkit vs MoZ
Hi MoZ Community, Does anybody know how well is Microsoft SEO Toolkit. As far i have noticed this tool reports around 20 violations under three broad areas like : SEO, Content and Performance. On many violations I have found MoZ to be silent like : 1-unnecessary redirects 2-Invalid mark ups 3-Missing Tag 4-like vilations and others Important is that it tells solutions as well against each violation on how to fix that. Any body can give insights while comparing it with MoZ. Tanveer

I want to place reviews from a review site also on my client's website, what's the right way to do that?
My client is doing a good job fitting rooftops out with solar panels. his customers are happy and ready to show this in online reviews. He has a partnership with a review site that gives him new leads, but I just don't want him to lose this valuable reviews just to this one review site.. Here's what i came up with and I love to hear your opinion on this;

I'll copy the content of the solarpanel review site, place it on my client's website in hreview. the contents canonical will be rightfully set to the review site, this way I want to avoid the duplicate content thing, but get the hard earned yellow stars in my client's SERPs. and show the visitors of my clien't s site what a great job he is doing, on his own website.. This is the first time I thought of this solution and I wonder if I'm forgetting something.. Is this solution safe with Google/Bing/Yahoo?0 -
What are the benefits of the URL meta tag?
We have too many meta tags and want to get rid of all the outdated ones. However, we don't want to eliminate valuable meta tags by mistake. So, before we say goodbye to the URL meta tag, we want to make sure we understand the pros and cons, if any. By the way, we are not referring to canonical URL tags, just URL as in:

2 Question about URL structure
Hello guys 1 - I have a question about the best structure for URLs from the point of view of SEO: Is it OK to use the URL as mywebsite.com.br/long-tail-article Or is better this mywebsite.com.br/category/long-tail-article 2 - When part of my keyword is already in my "category", for example: mywebsite.com.br/digital-marketing/digital-marketing-is-good I leave it as it is, or in the following way: mywebsite.com.br/digital-marketing-is-good NOTE: Do not take into account that this URL would be different from other URLs in this category
