Wordpress Custom Permalinks Plugin Issue
-
Hello,
I installed this plugin and I'm having trouble making it work. I'm new to WordPress so was hoping someone can help me out.
I'm looking to set up the following pages for example
http://testsite.azurewebsites.net/Services/Services1
http://testsite.azurewebsites.net/Services/Services2I do the following steps
- Add New Page
- Enter the following title "Services1"
- Enter the following text in the Permalink textbox "Services/Services1" replacing the default text "?page_id=140"
- Then I publish the page.
- This automatically updates the "Custom Fields" section below. The name is set to "custom_permalink" and the value is set to "Services/Services1".
- Then I "view page" but get a 404 error. The url is "http://testsite.azurewebsites.net/Services/Services1"
Some additional info
- 1. WordPress version 9.8.3
- Settings - Permalinks is set to "post name"
- Custom Permalinks version 0.7.18
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
-
Thanks Marty,
Worked perfectly
-
It should work with posts, pages, custom post types, etc without needing that plugin.
Good luck!
-
Thanks again Marty,
I've a couple of questions before I go ahead and implement those changes.
- Will this work for pages and not just blog posts? I'm more concerned about the pages right now.
- Also will I just be able to use the Permalinks section in Settings or will I need to install the Custom Permalinks plugin to be able to produce page urls such as
companyname/services/oracle/admin
companyname/services/oracle/dev
companyname/services/SAP/admin
Thanks again for all your help. I really appreciate it

I don't host my WordPress sites on IIS but according to their site, you have three choices for custom permalinks on IIS-
Microsoft IIS 7+ web server with the URL Rewrite 1.1+ module and PHP 5 running as FastCGI
Microsoft IIS 6+ using ASAPI_Rewrite (free for single-site server, $$ for multi-site server)
Microsoft IIS 6+ using Ionic ISAPI Rewriting Filter (IIRF) (free for single-site or multi-site server)I got the above from this page.

Hi Marty,
Back again. I've been working on this issue again this morning and now have admin access. A few new things have been discovered. This site is running on Azure and IIS so it seems that the .htaccess file is not needed but instead uses the web.config instead. I've tried updating that per this article but it still doesn't work. I think this might be more for blogs though rather than the plugin I've tried.
Any thoughts?
Thanks
-
Hi Marty,
Thanks for your response. I've passed this over to our admin for him to check. I'll post again pending the result from that.

Is your .htaccess file writeable by the server? If not your permalink (and plugin) settings won't work.

Do Wordpress sites outrank SquareSpace?
I was a big fan of Wordpress. I used it for 10 years. However, because I run a very small business, the constant upkeep needed on WP in the end started to frustrate me in the end, so I moved to SquareSpace. However, I am beginning to question my decision, as one of my sites is struggling really badly, and I mean badly. The other sites are okay. So I started asking around, and most people are saying there shouldn't be a difference. A few people have said their Wordpress sites always outranks their SquareSpace sites. Then I read what Rand Fishkin said in the below Twitter thread, now I am even more confused. I am very reluctant to move to Wordpress, its just so much hassle. But at the same time, if a site doesn't get much traffic then it's useless. https://twitter.com/drew_pickard/status/991659074134556673 https://twitter.com/randfish/status/991974456477278209 Please let me know your thoughts and experience.

Migrate from HTML to Wordpress?
My website is currently HTML because in the past, I liked a more hands-on approach and liked to have a high level of control over my code. My organic search rankings are very good. I do have a blog on wordpress now. Despite all of this, I am considering moving to Word Press. The reason is that the fancier website techniques are very easy to achieve with a wordpress theme or plug-in. And some changes, such as menu, can be done at the high level versus the entire site. Auto-responsive is built within the themes, so anytime a new device comes out, they update it so I don't have to. And, I would like to be more tightly integrated with my blog. I am also getting to the points that I have no time to code and would like something a little simpler to maintain. BUT, I am scared to make the move and then completely lose my organic rankings. I know that I will have to 301 all of the pages. And I know that I will have to maintain all my current on-page SEO by paying close attention to the headers and whatnot. Do you all think that it is worth making the switch? Is there a good chance my organic rankings will drop?

Wordpress Blog for Magento Store?
Magento is fantastic for e-commerce although the blog capabilities are limited and our web development fees are just ongoing. I have great experience with wordpress sites and I don't have a bad word to say about the CMS, there are plugins available for everything you possibly need to develop the blog. Would it be a good idea to integrate a wordpress blog for our e-commerce store? To keep both the transactional website and the blog on the same domain, but have a different style for the blog so we're not trying to 'sell' to people looking for home improvement advice and DIY guides, our main priority with the blog is to grow the website authority.

‘80-90% of SEO already done for you in Wordpress’ Am I missing something?
Hi there, I’m looking for some feedback on a statement made on my Facebook Page re Wordpress and SEO. Please understand I wouldn’t class myself as an expert but I am competent and achieve satisfactory results for clients, more so since becoming a SEOmoz Pro user, I’ve just had some great results for a client using SEOmoz guidelines in ‘On Page SEO Reports’ thank you very much! A comment however made on my FB page has got my interest…. “as you (kn)no(w) google loves WP and will get listed quicker as 80 to 90% of your SEO is already done” Does Wordpress (or Joomla for that matter mentioned in the same conversation) have some SEO advantages that Google loves as the poster would have me believe, can I save time and effort working in word press from an SEO point of view? I use the age old techniques of targeting key phrases and words and distributing them accordingly. Creating internal link structures with ‘key worded anchor text’ etc before embarking on any off page SEO. Do any of you vastly experienced (in comparison to me) SEO folk have any insight into what this statement refers to? I did not gather any references to SEO advantages in Wordpress or Joomla in the Enge and Fishkin et al book The Art of SEO, or any of the other books I’ve read, to develop my knowledge on SEO for the benefit of my clients and of course my pocket. Has Anyone Had Issues With ASP.NET 4.0 URL Routing?
I'm seeing some odd results in my SEOMOZ results with a new site I just released that is using the ASP.NET 4.0 URL routing. I am seeing thousands(!) of duplicate results, for instance, because the crawl has uncovered something like this: http://www.mysite.com/
Web Design | | TroyCarlson
http://www.mysite.com/default.aspx (so far, so good, though I wish it wouldn't show both)
http://www.mysite.com/default.aspx/about/ (what the heck -?)
http://www.mysite.com/default.aspx/about/about/ (WTF!?)
http://www.mysite.com/default.aspx/about/about/products/ (and on and on ad infinitum) I'm also seeing problems pop up in my sitemap because extensionless urls have an odd "eurl.axd/abunchofnumbersgohere" appended to the end of every address which is breaking links. sigh Buyer beware. I've found articles that discuss the "eurl.axd" issue here and there (this one seems very good), but nothing about the weird crawl issue I outlined above. Any advice?0
