Would you utilize an industry blog you own in linkbuilding and outreach activities for the same industry?
-
Much of my company's client base is in the same industry. They are not direct competitors, but do function in different parts of the same industry overall. My company also owns a blog that has been dormant for the past several years with great content that spans the industry's topics
I'm interested in revamping this blog as a place where we can do some blogging on behalf of our clients sites and also invite other industry experts to contribute in exchange for contributions to their sites and links back in their content from time to time.
I'm curious what your thoughts are on doing something like this. We would maintain a totally white hat approach to the content by avoiding over-linking and probably nofollowing a lot of our links in most cases. I believe it's an excellent resource in our ever-expanding link building and outreach capacity, but I also don't want to do something that's going to be looked at poorly by Google.
Please don't rip into me for this being a blackhat or unnatural tactic as it will be fully moderated by our team and will only publish high quality, industry-relevant content. What are your thoughts on how we could pull something like this off and what some of the dangers might be?

Your original question mentioned using it as a source of linkbuilding several times. It sounds like a place to "guest blog" and Matt Cutts is on the warpath against guest blogs these days.
I think that such a blog would be fine if all of the outlinks were nofollowed and the posts were placed there to drive a little traffic and to get some brand mentions. I think that traffic and brand mentions are valuable.
But, if it were my company, we would not be using our valuable content creation time producing content for a satellite site. The only way that satellite site will have valuable links is if there are links given to it from outside websites - and if I can produce content to attract that kind of link it would be better placed on my own website. That way any link that hits it will directly power my own domain and deliver traffic to my own domain. Traffic and links going to an outhouse only have fractional value.
If you have a couple of colleagues who can help you diversify your content do an article exchange. They write a nice one for your site and you write one for their site. There is only one link on the page going to their site and it is a nofollowed link in their bio space. That way both of your primary sites get a blog post and both of your sites get brand mentions and a bit of traffic exchange. No link manipulation. This is superior to posting your content on a satellite site because any links that are given to the articles benefit your main site instead of the satellite. Makes it look like you have colleagues in the industry.
That's how I would do it.

"a place where we can do some blogging on behalf of our clients sites and also invite other industry experts to contribute in exchange for contributions to their sites and links back in their content from time to time"
This sounds an awful lot like reciprocal linking and something that would not gain favour with Google.
Dangers? Yes, don't do it. You can't really ignore the fact that this is a very unnatural way to build links and there is no ethical way to pull this off.

Thoughts on why not if it's an equal opportunity blog for those that want to create great content whether they endorse your clients or competitors? If everything is above board, no links are sold and things are appropriate nofollowed and our clients just get to participate like all other participants what are the drawbacks?

OK... I will not say anything.

Best practices for retiring 100s of blog posts?
Hi. I wanted to get best practices for retiring an enterprise blog with hundreds of old posts with subject matter that won't be repurposed. What would be the best course of action to retire and maintain the value of any SEO authority from those old blog pages? Is it enough to move those old posts into an archive subdirectory and Google would deprioritize those posts over time? Or would a mass redirect of old blog posts to the new blog's home page be allowed (even though the old blog post content isn't being specifically replaced)? Or would Google basically say that if there aren't 1:1 replacement URLs, that would be seen as soft-404s and treated like a 404?

Does Google crawler understand & flag a blog post has text asserting sponsorship with dofollow outbound link?
I kind of know the answer, but just wanted to get some feedback from others. For the sake of argument, assume there are no other issues with the linking blog, such as: too many ads, thin content, etc. Question: If you make a payment for a blog post with a dofollow link, and in the blog post there is something to the effect of: "this post has been sponsored by..." Will Google crawlers detect that and flag that as an unnatural link?

Active, Old Large site with SEO issues... Fix or Rebuild?
Looking for opinions and guidance here. Would sincerely appreciate help. I started a site long, long ago (1996 to be exact) focused on travel in the US. The site did very well in the search results up until panda as I built it off templates using public databases to fill in the blanks where I didn't have curated content. The site currently indexes around 310,000 pages. I haven't been actively working on the site for years and while user content has kept things somewhat current, I am jumping back into this site as it provides income for my parents (who are retired). My questions is this. Will it be easier to track through all my issues and repair, or rebuild as a new site so I can insure everything is in order with today's SEO? and bonus points for this answer ... how do you handle 301 redirects for thousands of incoming links 😕 Some info to help: CURRENTLY DA is in the low 40s some pages still rank on first page of SERPs (long-tail mainly) urls are dynamic (I have built multiple versions through the years and the last major overhaul was prior to CMS popularity for this size of site) domain is short (4 letters) but not really what I want at this point Lots of original content, but oddly that content has been copied by other sites through the years WHAT I WANT TO DO get into a CMS so that anyone can add/curate content without needing tech knowledge change to a more relevant domain (I have a different vision) remove old, boilerplate content, but keep original

Do any sub-domains act as Private Blog Networks?
Hi All, We can see now that Google rolled 2 unconfirmed algo updates this month and they are penalising spam links and sites which use Private blog networks; as said by some SEO experts. Do any sub-domains act as PBNs because of too much linking...like linking website pages from every page of sub-domains?

Do industry partner links violate Google's policies?
We're in the process of The Great _Inquisition_piecing together a reconsideration request. In doing so, we reached out to an agency to filter and flag our backlinks as safe, should be no-followed, or should be removed. The problem is, they flagged several of our earned, industry partner links (like those pointing to us, HireAHelper, from 1-800-Pack-Rat and PODS for example) as either should be no-followed or should be removed. I have a hard time believing Google would penalize such a natural source of earned links, but then again, this is our second attempt at a Reconsideration Request, and I want to cover all my bases. What say you Moz community? No-follow? Remove? Leave alone?

Is Blog Commenting Worth Doing Anymore?
I set a little bit of time aside for each client to comment on blogs for backlinks, but it just seems like a waste of time at this point. Most blogs have comments turned off, or won't allow links. Obviously making your name a keyword and making that a link is very spammy, and alot of blogs are using Disqus or making you login with your facebook account to post a comment. What's the best way of going about this these days, or is it not even worth the time?

If I were to change the geographic keyword such as "foreclosures in Dallas" on 20 related blogs to "foreclosures in Los Angeles" what would happen?
In other words I'm wondering if someone built up an internet presence for their company through multiple websites over the years and then decided to move to another part of the united states, would it work to change all the keywords to the new location? Would that work toward getting them ranked in the new area or would you have to create entirely new websites? Thanks guys.
