As area pages are seen as trying to game google (see link below) is their a 'better way' to target multipe areas (100 odd)?

If you don't have physical locations in these cities, then you do have to be very cautious about taking this approach of building local landing pages. Unless you've got something totally unique to say on each page, then yes, you could actually be lowering the quality of your website by publishing tons of thin/duplicate/near-duplicate pages.

You should probably read the whole article, but from what you're describing, it sounds to me like your business will be covered in the section for Business Model IV. Check that out to help you determine whether local landing pages or a different strategy will make the most sense for your customers, the search engines and your business.

We are basically trying to target various areas with the services we offer but our current SEO commpany that we are working with thinks that as the content on each page although different is still similar if Google did a manual review?
So if we make sure that every page is unique even though we are targetting approx 100 areas their should be no problems?

What are you trying to achieve?
It is possible you may be reading to deep into this?
"Multiple pages on your site with similar content designed to rank for specific queries like city or state names"
This means that you might have:
widget-miami.htmlwidget-New york.html
widget-Chicago.htmlAll these pages have teh same content but with the location swapped out. Just to try and rank for those pages without having any real content for them.
It is not a problem if you have good content and something unique to offer.

Home page and category page target same keyword
Hi there, Several of our websites have a common problem - our main target keyword for the homepage is also the name of a product category we have within the website. There are seemingly two solutions to this problem, both of which not ideal: Do not target the keyword with the homepage. However, the homepage has the most authority and is our best shot at getting ranked for the main keyword. Reword and "de-optimise" the category page, so it doesn't target the keyword. This doesn't work well from UX point of view as the category needs to describe what it is and enable visitors to navigate to it. Anybody else gone through a similar conundrum? Duplicate Page Content
Hey Moz Community, Newbie here. On my second week of Moz and I love it but have a couple questions regarding crawl errors. I have two questions: 1. I have a few pages with duplicate content but it say 0 duplicate URL's. How do I know what is duplicated in this instance? 2. I'm not sure if anyone here is familiar with an IDX for a real estate website. But I have this setup on my site and it seems as though all the links it generates for different homes for sale show up as duplicate pages. For instance, http://www.handyrealtysa.com/idx/mls...tonio_tx_78258 is listed as having duplicate page content compared with 7 duplicate URLS: http://www.handyrealtysa.com/idx/mls...tonio_tx_78247

Hi there, We keep getting duplicate page content issues. However, its not actually the same page.

Is it possible to hide some of the on page results?
I have set up on page reports for keywords against specific pages... but I have a whole other bunch of reports which are automatically run by the system (many of them not really relevant at the moment in time) so, I'm wondering if there's a way to filter out just my own reports? This way I can focus on improving my target pages, rather than having to find them in amongst all the sys gen reports. Apologies if this is a rather obtuse questions.... newbie user. No Content on home page + rankings
If a home page has no content will it hurt the sites ability to rank? The interior pages will have content but not the home page. (See attached image) My client does not want content on the home page as he feels it will take away from the look and feel he wants to achieve. This website is actually 10 sites or locations in one as we intend to market each location (a total of 10) separately. In reality the home page is a doorway page to each separate location. I'd like feedback if possible as to the necessity or not, of content on the Home Page of this or any website. Will the lack of content hurt on the Homer Page hurt with SEO? Thanks

Woah, my A-grade optimized pages that were on the first page have all vanished outside the top 50 in Google... is this Panda?
Yep as mentioned, I had some pages hit the top ten pretty quickly after ensuring they were A-grade for pretty uncompetitive keywords however, today, all bar 2 have just vanished from the top 50! All were ranking in Google.co.uk and I know we were predicting the Panda update to hit soon but WOW! My client is understandably a little upset, what on earch do I tell him and what should I do about it? Cheers! jT
