Site Not Ranking- No Reason Why
-
I have a client with a HUGE website who should be ranking for it's competitive keywords. No penalties, or bad links. Old domain. Not ranking for anything. Client has a huge AdWords spend and my theory is that it's not ranking organically because of the AdWords spend. I can't think of anything other reason. Anyone? Thanks. The keywords I'm trying to rank this client for aren't even competitive.

Karen,
Was the site ever ranking for these terms? In other words, did they have rankings and then lose them?
As others have mentioned, the backlink profile for this site does not look good. You have a large number of keyword anchored links from low quality sources like directories and press releases. This type of link profile is a prime candidate for a Penguin hit. Can you tell if you took a hit in organic traffic on a known Penguin date? The last one was October 5, 2013.

Look at it in open site explorer there are only 13 linking domains, all of them are junk domains except a couple.
As an SEO these should be screaming spam at you. The path is clear before you. They need quality links to rank, and that all starts with quality content. I'd start with a review of all their content and see where you can go from there.
Good luck!

This is exactly correct. I actually went in and looked at every single link listed in opensiteexplorer. All but one of the links is a spammy directory link and the one that isn't is a low quality link from a magento plugin vendor.
Even a few decent links should help a lot.

Hi Karen,
It has a pretty weak link profile with a bunch of links from directories and a few too many anchor text optimized links. Since car computers are a commercial space, I would assume it's fairly competitive. Not saying that it's domain authority/link profile are its only problems, but definitely not a big plus. It's organic search problems for sure has nothing to do with whatever you're doing with paid search.
Best of luck! ... Mike

AdWords I don't believe would negatively affect your organic rankings. If you post up the URL then myself and other could provide you with more suggestions.

How to rank for a keyword
Hi guys, I'm looking to rank a new blog for a search term which we currently already rank #1 for. I want to create a blog which provides a better solution to a searchers query and knock our current #1 page for this new one. Is there a way to do this simply without losing the real-estate the currently ranked #1 page has already accumulated? Or is just a matter of working on this new blog to find it's own way to the top? Thanks in advance, James

Exact match .org Ecommerce: Reason why internal page is ranking over home page
Hello, We have a new store where an internal category page (our biggest category) is moving up ahead of the home page. What could be the reason for this? It's an exact match .org. Over-optimization? Something else? It happened both when I didn't optimize the home page title tag and when I did for the main keyword, i.e. mainkeyword | mainkeyword.org, or just mainkeyword.org Home Page. Both didn't help with this. We have very few backlinks. Thanks

Mobile Friendly Site yet rankings are in alot of cases worse than desktop
Hi All, We made our Website mobile responsive well in advance of the recent mobile algorithm changes . We only have a couple of pages with minor errors but yet our mobile rankings have not improved that much (maybe 1 place) and in alot of cases, we rank higher on desktop than we do on mobile for the same term etc. No the ranking boost is minimal at best and worse in many cases. I have checked our site on google mobile test and we are mobile friendly and on page speed test our mobile site is 99/100 user experience etc. Just wondered if anyone else has found the same ? thanks Pete

Site re-design, full site domain A/B test, will we drop in rankings while leaking traffic
We are re-launching a client site that does very well in Google. The new site is on a www2 domain which we are going to send a controlled amount of traffic to, 10%, 25%, 50%, 75% to 100% over a 5 week period. This will lead to a reduction in traffic to the original domain. As I don't want to launch a competing domain the www2 site will not be indexed until 100% is reached. If Google sees the traffic numbers reducing over this period will we drop? This is the only part I am unsure of as the urls and site structure are the same apart from some new lower level pages which we will introduce in a controlled manner later? Any thoughts or experience of this type of re-launch would be much appreciated. Thanks Pete

On-Site Optimization Tips for Job site?
I am working on a job site that only ranks well for the homepage with very low ranking internal pages. My job pages do not rank what so ever and are database driven and often times turn to 404 pages after the job has been filled. The job pages have to no content either. Anybody have any technical on-site recommendations for a job site I am working on especially regarding my internal pages? (Cross Country Allied.com)
