SEO and Internal Pages
-
Howdy Moz Fans (quoting Rand),
I have a weird issue. I have a site dedicated to criminal defense. When you Google some crimes, the homepage comes up INSTEAD of the internal page directly related to that type of crime.
However, on other crimes, the more relevant internal page appears.
Obviously, I want the internal page to appear when a particular crime is Googled and NOT the homepage.
Does anyone have an explanation why this happens?
FYI: I recently moved to WP and used a site map plugin that values the internal pages at 60% (instead of Weebly, which has an auto site map that didn't do that).
Could that be it? I have repeatedly submitted the internal pages via GWT, but nothing happens.
Thanks.

Hi there,
David has covered some important points already. I wanted to point out that the URL you supplied here (www.thesandiegocriminallawyer.com/theft-crimes.html) 301 redirects to http://www.thesandiegocriminallawyer.com/san-diego-theft-crimes-attorney.html. Are you using the resolving URL to do any link building (although you say the number of inbound links to the crime pages are very low)?
If there was an older version of some of these pages and you've gone through recent redirects when moving to Wordpress, those new pages / URLs may have a hard time ranking initially.

Hi David,
Thank you. The site URL is www.thesandiegocriminallawyer.com
The page is: www.thesandiegocriminallawyer.com/theft-crimes.html
Thanks again.

"The destination URL does NOT match the search query (should I change it so it does?)."
I would make the URL structure closely matched to the main phrase you are trying to rank for. For example:
On a subpage for "personal injury" you could set up the subpage URL as YOURDOMAIN.com/personal-injuryIf you would like me to take a look at it, please provide the site URL. If you decide to do any changes, please remember to do the redirects so that you dont have 404 errors.
"The back links point primarily to the homepage (except for the two practice areas that are ranking)."
I think you kind of answered your own question on this one
The two subpages that are ranking have links pointing at them. -
Hi David,
Thanks for the feedback.
Yes, the interior pages depict only one type of crime, and the homepage links to them (besides just the menu).
The destination URL does NOT match the search query (should I change it so it does?).
The back links point primarily to the homepage (except for the two practice areas that are ranking).

No, I was not.

I understand your want to get the subpages ranking, but let's focus on the positive first.
If your homepage listing is already ranking high repeatedly for different searches, do everything you can to get that listing to stand out. Ratings, reviews, schema mark up, authorship, all of it.
Secondly, what does your internal ranking structure and URLs look like? Do your subpages depict only one type of crime, and does the homepage link to them, other than just in the menu? Does the destination URL match the type of search query being performed?
What about your backlinks? If all of them only point to the homepage, then Google is going to think that is the best resource for users.

Hi,
Before you moved over to Wordpress, how were your rankings then? Was every page being delivered as expected?

Are In-Page Tabs still detrimental to SEO?
Hi Mozers, Are in-page tabs still detrimental for SEO? In-page tabs: allow you to alternate between views within the same context, not to navigate to different areas. As in one long HTML page that just looks like it's divided into different pages via tabs that you can click between. Each tab has it's own URL, which I guess is for analytics tracking purposes? https://XXX https://XXX?qt-staff_profile_tabs=1 https://XXX?qt-staff_profile_tabs=2 https://XXX?qt-staff_profile_tabs=3

One Page Design / Single Product Page
I have been working in a project. Create a framework for multi pages that I have So here is the case
Intermediate & Advanced SEO | | Roman-Delcarmen
Most of them are single page product / one page design wich means that I dont have many pages to optimize. All this sites/ pages follow the rules of a landing page optimization because my main goals is convert as many users as I can. At this point I need to optimize the SEO, the basic stuff such as header, descriptions, tittles ect. But most of my traffic is generated by affiliates, which is good beacuse I dont have to worrie to generate traffic but if the affiliate network banned my product, then I lose all my traffic. Put all my eggs in the same basket is not a good idea. Im not an seo guru so that is the reason Im asking whic strategies and tactics can give me results. All kind of ideas are welcome1 -

Do Page Anchors Affect SEO?
Hi everyone, I've been researching for the past hour and I cannot find a definitive answer anywhere! Can someone tell me if page anchors affect SEO at all? I have a client that has 9 page anchors on one landing page on their website - which means if you were to scroll through their website, the page is really really long! I always thought that by using page anchors instead of sending users through to a dedicated landing page, ranking for those keywords makes it harder because a search spider will read all the content on that landing page and not know how to rank for individual keywords? Am I wrong? The client in particular sells furniture, so on their landing page they have page anchors that jump the user down to "tables" or "chairs" or "lighting" for example. You can then click on one of the product images listed in that section of the page anchor and go through to an individual product page. Can anyone shed any light on this? Thanks!

Onsite SEO vs Offsite SEO
Hey I know the importance of both onsite & offsite, primarily with regard to outreach/content/social. One thing I am trying to determine at the moment, is how much do I invest in offsite. My current focus is to improve our onpage content on product pages, which is taking some time as we have a small team. But I also know our backlinks need to improve. I'm just struggling on where to spend my time. Finish the onsite stuff by section first, or try to do a bit of both onsite/offsite at the same time?

Mass Product Page Upload - SEO Issue?
Hi We will be adding a lot of products to our site, in a mass referencing exercise, not all in one go, but 10,000 split into a few loads. This product content won't be duplicate, but the quality of the information may be sparse and not very high. My question is, whether adding a bulk of these pages will reduce the pverall domain authority on our site? Thank you

SEO - What Should We Do...
Hi Guys, Hope your all OK. Were having major problems with our homepage ranking for our main keyword - we were originally 4 but over the Christmas period our SEO company reported a fault with one of there servers that they were using for links, because of this fault these links were de-indexed from the search engine and in turn we have plummeted to 10th... At the time we had a landing page with an exact match keyword in it, e.g: www.ourdomainname.co.uk/key-word/ we were told to 301 this to our main page in Google but when we have looked today its now showing this page instead of our homepage. We also have another domain that we are using for a forum at the moment, now this domain name is an exact match doming e.g www.keyword.co.uk. The question is do we gamble and 301 our whole site to www.keyword.co.uk and see if we can get this ranking better? Thanks, Scott

Do in page links pointing to the parent page make the page more relevant for that term?
Here's a technical question. Suppose I have a page relevant to the term "Mobile Phones". I have a piece of text, on that page talking about "mobile phones", and within that text is the term "cell phones". Now if I link the text "cell phones", to the page it is already placed on (ie the parent page) - will the page gain more relevancy for the term "cell phones"?? Thanks
