WP SEO plugin
-
When working with WP sites I generally use Michael Torbert's All in One SEO Pack. I've encountered a few examples where when the homepage shows up on a Google search results page the title/title tag shows up as {Business Name:} | {Keyword/Description}. In the 'General Settings' of the plugin in the 'Home Title' field, I have it listed as {Keyword/Description} | {Business Name}
I'm not sure why the order is getting switched and where the ':' comes from. I'm not sure if this even has any adverse effect. If anyone has had experience with this, your input would be appreciated.
Note - I'm not seeing this issue reflected on Bing.

I have seen this as well, and have experience with both SEO plugins mentioned in this thread. Yoast is very good, as is All in one seo pack. Not many people are aware of the different rules of robots for a page.
The page title switching is controlled by Google, as mentioned above. The effects can be mitigated by adding a special meta tag on that page, which is ODP = no. ODP (stand for open directory project) will allow Google to switch around the titles to better suit the users search query. Another tag you should add is archive = no. Below is a complete example:
name="robots" content="index,follow,noarchive,snippet,noodp" />
This states to the search engine, index this page, follow all links, do not show archived pages, (old, cached) allow snippets and markup, and do not customize displayed titles from open directory project. Want proof?

"In some circumstances, Google uses descriptions from the Open Directory Project as the title and snippet for a web result; this tag lets you opt out of the ODP title and description."
I have used this on my site, and on clients sites with great success. If you add this tag, it will take a while to reindex, but give it a try and see if they display the real page title after you submit and wait a bit. This should help you out quite a bit.

I'm actually about to write about this lol. This happened to my site as well. Google can switch that for you. If you look at the source, it is usually what you want to be, but Google shows otherwise.
It does happen and it's pretty common. Change it to something else, something better and try to let it get indexed again. It normally shows up correctly the next time around.

I have also been experiencing this with a few of my clients. As Spencer said it is Google choosing to re-arrange the tag with business name first.

Hi Steve,
First, I would suggest looking at Yoast's SEO plugin. This offers much more in terms of customisation and function.
Do you mind listing the URL so I can take a look at the homepage? It might be Google (probably is) but just need to be sure.

This is definitely Google choosing to put the business name at the beginning of the title. This is extremely common and in my experience it will only do this for homepages. This doesn't always happen though and I'm not sure exactly what makes Google decide to rearrange it.

Look at the source of the page and make sure the <title>content is as you want it to read. If it is, than Google is choosing to change the way it displays your title in SERPs. Unfortunately, there isn't much you can do. Just make sure your title length is short enough to be displayed fully in search results.</p></title>

Is page speed important to improve SEO ranking?
I saw on a SEO Agency's site (https://burstdgtl.com/search-engine-optimization/) that page speed apparently affects Google ranking. Is this true? And if it is, how do I improve it, do I need an agency?

Changing existing URL's to improve SEO
Here's a general question: At what PR/page rank (or Moz 'page authority') would you no longer change an existing URL that's cryptic to one that includes the related page keyword or at least relevant terms? Does using a 301 redirect to the new URL preserve the page rank? Thanks!

Is Disqus as good for SEO as a built in comment system on your website?
Disqus is a simple tool you can use to easily get comments up and running on your website. Does it have the same value as a built in comment feature such as a Wordpress blog or does Google not attribute the Disqus comments to the websites content as it would for Wordpress?

Homepage SEO: Does Text Content Help Traffic?
Hi Mozzers! My employers homepage (www.swarovski.com) is - amongst other problems we're about to fix - very thin (not to say empty!) in text content. If we were to put relevant text on the next version of the page, would that be beneficial in terms of traffic to that page? Thanks and cheers, Chris

An ecomerce seo question
Looking for a few opinions on this please...Trying to reduce the number of pages I have to seo to rank on my websites and at the same time avoid the google over optimisation issues. Previously on our ecomerce websites we would have a category page for, say, 12 times, we would then seo that page for generic terms related to the page; ie, blue dress, cheap blue dress, blue party dress etc. The individual product pages would then be seoed with the title and h1 tags containing the exact product name and the url containing the product name too. This worked fine but we are suffering from some duplicate content issues of late (the products are mixture of few unique items and probably 95% imported affiliate datafeeds) as we have an average of 80,000 products per store we have neither the time nor the staff to rewrite everything (the products update daily directly from the merchants so would need to be done daily) What we are planning on moving toward is blocking the individual product pages from Google and instead putting all efforts into the category pages. The category page will contain plenty of quality unique content related to the category so the only duplicate content would be a line of the product name and price. Whilst we would still rank the category page for broad keywords we also would like to now rank the category page for 16 individual product names as there is a good profit to make made by the sheer volume of product names we plan on ranking for. Obviously we could not get all the products into the url and the page title as that would be silly but would it be acceptable to have multiple h2 tags on the page, each with a different entry, the product names (H1 will be saved for the category name). We can easily bold these keywords to help in the optimisation as per the seo moz onsite analysis tool and we can add image text to ensure the product name is featured at least twice on the page. As so few sites actually seo for the long tail product names, most retailers rank by virtue of their domain quality alone, our onsite seo doesn't have to be 100% but getting the best we can out of the page will help the efforts. Many thanks Carl
