How to break into a serp dominated by large companies? (but low keyword difficulty)

I'm currently doing some keyword research, and on favourable keywords such as:
"weekend breaks in lake district" (320 searches per month with 39% keyword difficulty), I see that all of the first page SERPS are from larger companies (last minute, centerparcs etc)
How likely will it be that I can get on that first page, assuming I am focusing my page on that particular keyword. Sparse info I know, but I didn't want to spend hours going down a dead end street. Is it simply that these larger companies are in the top 10 because there are no specific pages targeting that keyword, or do I have little chance?

It can be easier than you'd expect to outrank big travel / price comparison websites for queries like this by appealing to heightened relevancy, rather than authority. No one really needs to state that you won't build the same authority as Lastminute or Trip Advisor, but you can certainly be more relevant to them for the specific subject of weekends in the Lake District, and similar queries.
I definitely wouldn't say that those are "local" queries in that they're being searched for by people all over the country, but they're also not Lastminute-style websites' bread and butter.
This isn't to say you won't need links, but you don't need the thousands of links that point to the root domains of large competitors. There are already "smaller" websites ranking for that particular query (hotels, as opposed to national brands). I'm searching from Berkshire so am probably fairly indicative of what your market sees.
I can't say how likely it is, and it's not easy to compete in an area that the big guys are working in already, but half the battle is creating a website that is vastly more relevant for the query (i.e. a better, more well-rounded resource) than the fairly standard information given on a page like http://www.lastminute.com/hotels/the-lake-district.html

Yes, you're right, it never stops, and thankfully in many ways, we are glad - it's keeps people like me in business.
Good idea re the adwords (and one I had already put to the client!).
Yes, I had hoped the long tail keywords would give me a head start, and think they probably will, but the dominance of the large companies did make me think twice. I guess the only thing to do is to dive in and give it a try!

From the example you've given, it appears you're targeting local, long tail keywords. From my experience, you certianly stand a good chance of outranking the competition, and here's a activity you can try to show you exactly how difficult it would be.
Login to your Google Adwords account and create a campaign and adword group with some of your long tail keywords. Then create and ad and let Google calculate how much it would cost you for your Google ad to rank #1. If you can afford a month of adwords, let it run and see if the ROI makes sense. You might find that your keywords for your ad might not even be eligible to show because they're associated with very little search traffic.
Just a suggestion here, but there really is no way to tell how much work it would take for you to out rank your competition. If you do outrank them at some point, they might boost their own efforts to pull ahead. It just never stops...

In my opinion everyone has a change, in some cases big name companies run the show because they do a great job branding their businesses but you can do the same. Write good content use quality images about your product or services, maybe start a blog with an open discussion or conversation related to your niche and that can help. Try to use your trigger keyword phrases within the content.

Competitor Ranks Top Keywords Without Backlinks
One of my competitors is ranking very well for many different competitive keywords (1k+ searches per month). I'm trying to figure out how in the world he is ranking so well. I've signed up for MozPro and looked at his back-links. He has 1 branded site-wide back-link from a decent blog. He also has 1 contextual back-link from a decent blog. Other than these 2 back-links, the rest are garbage links unlikely to even count for anything (he has maybe 12 of these low quality back-links). My website on the other hand has more than 15 back-links from different (high quality) websites and does not rank anywhere near this competitor. This leads me to believe that either MozPro back-link reporting is inadequate or there is foul-play on the part of my competitor. As far as on-page SEO is considered, his website is far inferior. Therefore, I highly doubt this would play a role. What are some reasonable approaches I can take to better understand the cause of this discrepancy. Clearly the back-link reporting has not revealed any answers.

How is it possible to rank on Google Norway for spot nr.1 (page in English language) and spot nr.2 (page in Norwegian language) , when all you competitors have higher PA, DA and a lot more backlinks and better on-page optimization according to MOZ? Site Ranking for keywords that they haven't targeted in content
There is a site that I am constantly battling for the #1 spot for a particular keyword and I can't see that they are doing any link building, they are not using any anchor text for the keyword "at all" just their company name (not exact match) and their content doesn't even contain the keyword. I used Open site explorer to analyze their activity, but they are doing something I can't figure out from that data. Any other tools to use? I have higher quality links than them, post content nearly 5 times per week to my blog and their blog hasn't been updated in ages, I kill them in social media, there isn't one instance that they are better than my site and I only build quality driven links, no blog comment crap and get featured on lots of industry blogs for our work. I distribute my content very effectively, I just can't figure it out. They were no where about 5 months ago now they are tearing it up for lots of keywords in the industry top spots. I can build a few links and surpass them, but I have to do it every week or so and I think they are doing something fishy. I just want to figure out what they are doing and bury them. I don't want to post their url and mine here as I don't want them to see this post in search results.

Should I set up multiple websites with keywords in the domain?
I work for an e-commerce brand that manufactures sells 2-3 uniform products for medical professionals. Of course, we set out originally using our brand name as our domain name, and we will continue down that path. However, our best products are the premium lab coats we sell, and we're currently facing an uphill battle for the keyword combo, "lab coats" which is 44% competitive. In our ranking analysis, we can see that we're up against 2 major competitive forces: extremely high domain authority (i.e. Amazon & Ebay), and stores that have the phrase "lab coats" or the word "lab" in their domain name. We recently dropped the hosting package we had with the domain www.scrubsandlabcoats.net (which was redirecting to our primary domain) and our ranking dropped almost immediately afterwards. We put that site back up and now 301 redirect it to our main site but it doesn't look like we restored whatever it was that was in place on that site (before my time) because our rankings haven't improved back to where they were a few months ago. Question is: Would it make sense to purchase a domain with the combination of our brand name and the words "lab coats" and then put up a few pages with links to our top productus OR would that be no more effective than what we already have in place (www.ourdomain.com/lab-coats.html)? Also, any guesses on what kind of crazy set up we used to have on that other domain (scrubsandlabcoats.net) that was helping us in the past? Really appreciate the help!

What is frustrating me is the Google list of keywords recommended. I would like a good SEO company
Hi, I know this must be a repeated question but I would like to have an SEO company that would take care of getting my site on the top three pages of google and I would like some advice over my website. I have been investing in link building for a month now but I think my meta tag might not be the most appropriate, i should probably have various and came across your website. How much does exact match or almost exact match affect the difficulty score?
If a keyword get 50% difficulty on the keyword tool what would it be if it was an exact match domain. Would it go down to 30% What if it was just one character off an exact match or one word? Thank you in advance!
