Better tactics for keyword research
-
I am paying for monthly Adwords Google. I am planning to build out and optimize my website content with the findings from the Adwords campaign. What is frustrating me is the Google list of keywords recommended. Is there a better tool for determining excellent, "long-tail" keywords specific to my industry, products and services?

Hey Nate,
Try Keyword Optimizer Pro (Google It)
It is free and here is what it does:
When you search Google, it shows a list of suggestions before you hit "enter". Now try this: hit "space" letter "a". This gives a new list, delete it, then "space" letter "b", etc.
Keyword Optimizer Pro scrapes A-Z and 0-9. There are a couple of settings, the longest which can return 10,000 phrases.
You can take the lists, and if you are signed in to Adwords, you can paste 2500 keywords in there to analyze them. I use it at least once a week with no problems and it was completely updated about a month ago.
Hope this helps (I know it will),
Jared

Try typing the keywords you have now into Ubersuggest. This will give you hundreds of more long tail suggestions. You can quickly come up with thousands of possible phrases. Then copy your new list into Google keyword tool and see if any of them are worth anything to form your new list.

There are some good keyword research tools out there. SEOBook features some of them here. (about 1.5 years old)
http://www.seobook.com/archives/001013.shtml
I have used keyword discovery, wordtracker and the adwords tool. All have performed well. However, I think adwords tool does a great job and that, combined with my brain, and some very occasional competitor checking is enough time spent on the task for me.
Why check the people below you? They are the ones who might be kicking your butt tomorrow.... and the most dangerous competitor is the one who has not yet arrived.

EGOL: Thanks for the tips. But, why look at competitors who are not beating me?
From what you're saying there is not necessarily a good "tool" out there for outstanding keyword research. It comes down to fundamental research and evaluating your competitors.
-
Pick the competitors who are beating you in the SERPs... and a few who are not.
Then visit their sites and sniff their keywords.
Also... when I use the Adwords keyword too, I look at the list of KWs that they provide and then start typing in some that I think of. I can usually add a lot to their list because I know my industry very well.

Looking for Competitive Research Tool Recommendations
Hi Moz Community! I'm doing research for a client and trying to gain insights around their competitors website data. Specifically trying to see what landing pages on the competitors site receive the most traffic. Does anyone currently use a tool that shows estimated traffic here? As an FYI, outside of MOZ Pro (which I love), I use SpyFu and SimilarWeb. Right now my client's landing page traffic is mainly homepage traffic and we want to make reccos on where to grow outside the homepage to increase visibility in other specific areas where there is search demand. We have a good idea but I'm hoping the competitor web data will back up those recommendations. Any recommendations here would be super valuable! Thank you in advance for your time. Abbi

What a Brand should do first for Their Blog Keyword Research or Topic Research?
Hello Moz Community, Need your help guys. What a Brand should do first for their Blog? Keyword Research or Topic Research? Like for the Brand Product page/ eCom Pages, it's quite easy > 1. Buy "Product" Online
Competitive Research | | Max_
2. Buy "Product" "Geo."
3. Product Reviews [for Guest Posting or Reviews]
4. Best "Product" Online and so But, for the blog, it's tough for searching out the keywords that will work if the SEO team or the keyword research team is not aware or don't have the detailed knowledge about the niche they are working on. Please verify: Is it a correct method that an editor should provide a "topic" to the SEO team to find relevant keywords by using a Keyword Research tool that there are enough searches for it which can provide benefits to the blog via the search engine.0 -

Identify keywords certain sites target
Hello, I've been asked to identify what keywords a group of blogs/communities might target so that we might gain some insight for our own SEM purposes. It's been several years since I used SEOmoz's tools, so they have changed a lot. I couldn't remember if you had such a tool, but it appears you do not--or at least not that I am finding. I was wondering if anyone could point me in the direction of such a tool where I can input a subdomain, and have a report stating which keywords are the ones the domain rates highly for. To be clear: I'm not looking for a traffic estimation or anything; simply a breakdown of what keywords a specific page or domain support most. P.S. I did a search on here for certain terms like "competitive keyword targets" and so forth, and saw no matching QA. I'm sorry if there is a duplicate! Thanks,

Tool for finding what keywords a competitor ranks for?
Does anyone know of any good tools that display what keywords a competitor ranks for? I have many competitors that I know get a lot of traffic, but I'm not entirely sure where the traffic comes from so it would be nice to plug in their url and get a general overview of what keywords they rank for and what positions.
