Google is ranking the wrong page and I don't know why?
-
I have an E-Commerce store and to make things easy, let's say I am selling shoes. There is:
- Category named 'Shoes'
- and 3 products 'Sport shoes', 'Hiking shoes' and 'Dancing shoes'
My problem: For the keyword 'Shoes' Google is showing the product result 'Sport shoes'. This makes no sense from user perspective. (It's like searching for 'iPhone' and getting a result for 'iPhone 4s' instead of a general overview.)
Now what are the specifics of my category page (Which I want Google to rank):
- It has more external links with higher quality
- It has more internal links
- It has much higher page authority
- It has useful text to guide the user for the keyword
- It is a category instead of a product
All this given, I just don't know how I can signal Google that this page makes sense to show in SERPs? Hope you can help with this!

Hi there, glad to have been of help!
As far as how long to wait goes, it really is hard to say but if you see nothing at all in a month, I'd consider other options like canonicalisation (or coming back here, showing what you've done and seeing what people say - as I am only one opinion! ).
Cheers,
Jane

Thank you for taking a look and your suggestions.
As you suggested, I will go ahead and increase the signals to the category page. Will try more internal links pointing back from the products and also more meaningful text on the category page.
How long shall I wait to know if Google got the point? Probably hard to say, but a rough timeframe from your experience would help me a lot.
If doesn't work out, I will consider canonicalization.
Thank you again!

This is a pretty old, annoying phenomenon called keyword cannibalisation. As DJ123 has said, Google can't work out which page it should rank for the generic term. It's incredibly frustrating when the signals are otherwise perfect to point out the right page.
I would add the "shoes" link--pointing to the main page--to all pages, not just the Sports Shoes page, e.g. from Hiking, Dancing, etc. as well, as is the case in this graphic. This graphic is from a very old blog post on keyword cannibalisation, which will read as pretty basic now but might be worth a glance.
This could be a risky idea, but if the metrics for the main shoes page are significantly stronger than the Sports page, you could consider canonicalising the Sports page to the main page for as long as it takes for Google to pick up the main sports page and "drop" the Sports page. Once that happens, remove the canonical tag and fetch as Googlebot from Webmaster Tools, waiting for the Sports page to be re-indexed. I doubt that the Sports page would take precedence over the main page again after this, but this is risky because it will force the Sports page out, and that page is currently ranking. You're taking a fairly confident gamble that the main page will take its place, but it's a gamble nonetheless.

It is because Google sees that you have tons of duplicated content and is choosing what they think is relevant and pushing back what the duplicated content which they see as not as important.
Use canonical urls to show what the most important pages are otherwise you will constantly be battling this.

Thank you for your reply.
In this case I'm not using canonicals, because I want this page to rank individually for it's specific keyword 'Sport shoes'.
In my point of view the content is quite different. But of course I don't know how Google is understanding it.
What I did a few weeks back: From the product 'Sport shoes' I set an internal link with the anchor text 'Shoes' back to the category page. Unfortunately, this didn't work either.

Do you use canonical URLs?
It is possible that Google is choosing for you which page they think is relevant because there are what they see as duplicated content.

Should you 'noindex' Checkout Pages?
Today I was reviewing my Moz analytics and suddenly noticed 1,000 issues with pages without a meta description. I reviewed the list and learned it is 1,000 checkout pages. That's because my website has thousands of agency pages from which you can buy a product, and it reflects that difference on each version of the checkout. So, I was thinking about no-indexing (but continuing to 'follow') these checkout pages, but wondering if it has any knock-on effects I may be unaware of? Any assistance is much appreciated. Luke

How does this company rank this page?
If you Google the keyword "used iPhone 5," the URL ranking #1 in the SERP is the following: http://buy.gazelle.com/buy-used-iphone-5/ This page has zero content on it and a button on it that takes you to a category page with the iPhone 5 pre selected. My question is **how does this page outrank the sites products pages? **I ran a backlink analysis and don't see any links pointing to that URL. Also, **how does this site deal with its duplicate content issues? **If you look at the following URLs, you'll see a bunch of duplicate content in the "Key Features" section below the fold. http://buy.gazelle.com/buy/used/iphone-5-16gb-at-t http://buy.gazelle.com/buy/used/iphone-5-16gb-sprint If you think about it, this site will have different product pages for each variations of cellphone carrier and cellphone storage capacity. So for an iPhone 5, they will have 15 pages! Any insight into this would be much appreciated!

Pagination and View All Pages Question. We currently don't have a canonical tag pointing to View all as I don't believe it's a good user experience so how best we deal with this.
Hello All, I have an eCommerce site and have implemented the use rel="prev" and rel="next" for Page Pagination. However, we also have a View All which shows all the products but we currently don't have a canonical tag pointing to this as I don't believe showing the user a page with shed loads of products on it is actually a good user experience so we havent done anything with this page. I have a sample url from one of our categories which may help - http://goo.gl/9LPDOZ This is obviously causing me duplication issues as well . Also , the main category pages has historically been the pages which ranks better as opposed to Page 2, Page 3 etc etc. I am wondering what I should do about the View All Page and has anyone else had this same issue and how did they deal with it. Do we just get rid of the View All even though Google says it prefers you to have it ? I also want to concentrate my link juice on the main category pages as opposed being diluted between all my paginated pages ? - Does anyone have any tips on how to best do this and have you seen any ranking improvement from this ? Any ideas greatly appreciated. thanks Peter

The Wrong Page Is Still The Only One Ranking
For some reason, the search term "Tampa Personal Injury Attorney," shows this page of our's http://www.kempruge.com/personal-injury/ on the second page, but omits this page http://www.kempruge.com/tampa-personal-injury-attorney/ (the correct one). The correct one only shows up in omitted results. I have posted this question before. I made the changes suggested to me, and it actually worked for a couple weeks. But, it reverted back. I tried for the last two months to fix this on my own, but I just can't figure it out. Does anyone have any idea what to do here? Incredibly appreciative of any assistance, Ruben

Not ranking on Bing but is on Google?
Hi What are the main differences between Bing and Google in terms of ranking sites? My site is ranking well in Google but in Bing it is very low down and does not deliver much traffic. In Bing webmaster tools there are no warning messages and I had sent in a sitemap back in 2011 and 77 pages are listed, but I had not submitted a URL could this be why my pages are not ranking highly? Or does anybody have a checklist on what a site should offer to get ranking on Bing?

How do I increase rankings when the indexed page is the homepage?
Hi Forum, This is a two-part question. The first is: "what may be the cause of some rank declines?" and the second is "how do I bring them back up when the indexed page is the homepage?" Over the last week I noticed some declines in several of my top keywords, many of which point to the site's homepage. The site itself is an eCommerce site, which had less visits last week than normal (holidays it seems, since the data jibes with key dates). Can a decline in traffic cause ranking declines? Any other ideas of where to look? Secondly, for those keywords that link to the homepage, how do we bring these back up since a homepage can't be optimized for every single keyword? We sell yoga products and can't have a homepage that is optimized for keywords like "yoga mat," "yoga blocks," "yoga pilates clothing," and several others, as these are our category pages' keywords. Any thoughts? Thanks!
