Destination URL in SERPs keeps changing and I can't work out why.. Help.
-
I am befuddled as to why our destination URL in SERPs keeps changing
oak furniture was nicely returning
http://www.thefurnituremarket.co.uk/oakfurniture.asp
then I changed something yesterday I did 2 things.
-
published a link to that on facebook as part of a competition.
-
redirected dynamic pages to the static URL for oak furniture..
Now for oak furniture the SERPs in GG UK is returning our home page as the most relevant landing page..
Any Idea why?
I'm leaning to an onpage issue than posting on FB..
Thoughts?

I'm at the same point with an ecommerce. I targeted a select amount of keywords too hard at the start. Now I'm looking at the past years ecommerce conversion keywords and fine tuning all my product pages to better rank them.
-
I originally turned them into image links because we were getting reports of link canibalisation and whilst our new static link pages bedded in and started building their own link profiles I felt it best to put a stop to this.
In other words I still wanted to the homepage to rank whilst the sub pages authority increased. I think we are at a point now where we flip back to text links.
-
You can also redo your navigation menus in text/css styles as well.
-
Agreed. It's even the very first keyword phrase:
<title>Oak Furniture | French Furniture | Mirrored Furniture | Coffee Tabletitle>
-
our oakfurniture.asp page is around 6 months old now and has been indexing for "oak furniture " for the last 3...
now
we only have a fraction of the oak furniture content on our home page. thats on our oak furniture.asp page.
We did have a dynamic catergory page that I did a 301 yesterday to point the static page with the theory it would bolster its internal linking profile.
also I did this because I dont think our CMS cat page was very visually appealing and there was way too much content below the fold.
we do suffer a lot with pagination due to the dynamic URLs we have with this CMS.. on the whole the onpage improvements I have implemented has lead to pleasing amounts of pages being indexed. So I figure google can work around our onpage limitations thanks to webmaster tools etc and index our content.
Our on page is far from perfect though. I have been link building towards a number of inner pages and this page in particular being our flag ship.
I havent done anything silly with it as far am I am aware I just do link building as and when I have time.
Does this clarify anything?
-
and take "oak furniture" out of your homepage heading and meta description
-
You have changed something and now google is responding - they often test different landing pages. I find this a lot with newly launched sites, Google will run through a number of possible landing pages for queries over a few weeks before it settles on one
To get it to pick the one you want:
- Work hard to build links to the page you want, internal and external
- Try eliminate duplicate content - not exact duplicate content, but content that talks about the same thing - I mostly do 1 keyword for 1 page and make sure that no other page cannibalizes its keyword
- build out your oak furniture page - make it substantially more about oak furniture than any other page on your site

Why can't I rank for my brand name?
We are soon to launch a new company in New Zealand called Zing. I have been tasked with the challenge of ranking as highly as possible for anything to do with Zing before launch in February. Zing is in the financial industry so my colleagues thought that it would be a good idea to make a small blog (very small with literally one post) that reviewed other financial lenders. This sight stayed online for a couple of months before it was replaced. The official website is still yet to launch, so as an in between, I asked that we make a splash page with a small competition on it (see here at zing.co.nz). I would have preferred there were more keywords on the website but this was not achieved. I am still pushing for this and am hoping to get a few pages on there in the near future. Instead of getting the keywords on the splash page, I was given permission to start a subdomain, (blog.zing.co.nz). This contains many more common search terms and although its not quite doing the job I would like, the rankings for Zing have started to increase. At the moment, we are ranking number 1 for a few brand related keywords such as zing loans. This is why I feel something is wrong, because we rank number 1 for over 10 similar terms but yet we DO NOT EVEN APPEAR on the search engines at all for Zing. Have we been penalized? Do you have any suggestions at all? Do you think we could have been penalized for the first average blog? Maybe I messed up the swap over? Any help would be hugely appreciated!

Should you use the canonicalization tag when the content isn't exactly a duplicate?
We have a site that pull data from different sources with unique urls onto a main page and we are thinking about using the canonicalization tag to keep those source pages from being indexed and to give any authority to the main page. But this isn’t really what canonicalization is supposed to be used for so I’m unsure of if this is the right move.

To give some more detail: We manage a site that has pages for individual golf courses. On the golf course page in addition to other general information we have sections on that page that show “related articles” and “course reviews”.
We may only show 4 or 5 on each of those courses pages per page, but we have hundreds of related articles and reviews for each course. So below “related articles” on the course page we have a link to “see more articles” that would take the user to a new page that is simply a aggregate page that houses all the article or review content related to that course.
Since we would rather have the overall course page rank in SERPs rather than the page that lists these articles, we are considering canonicalizing the aggregate news page up to the course page.
But, as I said earlier, this isn’t really what the canonicalization tag is intended for so I’m hesitant.
Has anyone else run across something like this before? What do you think?0 -
Changing all urls
A client of mine has a wordpress website that is installed in a directory, called "site". So when you go to www.domain.com you are redirected to www.domain.com/site. We all know how bad it is to have a redirect fron your subdomain to another page. In this case I measured a loss of 5 points of page authority. The question is: what is the best practice to remove the "site" from the address and changing all the urls? Should I use the webmaster tool to tell to Google that the site is moving? It's not 100% true, cause the site is just moving one level up. Should I install a copy of the website under www.domain.com and just redirect 301 every old page to its new url? This way I think the site would be deindexet for 2/3 months. Any suggestions or tips welcome! Thanks DoMiSol

Should i change the url name for serp plural from singular to plural please advise
Hi, I have an established ecommerce site online since 2008 when I set it up I did not really think about it and i called it mywidget. However the traffic is minimum 10 times higher for plural and all the long tails ie bluewidgets, cheapwidgets are all plural. I rank very well on the widget but not widgets - I know there is more competition but still it would be best to have the most commonly used phrases in the url. Now I have registered mywidgets should i transfer my shop to mywidgets and setup a permanen redirect 301 for all the products url and categories. I'm guessing I will be negatively impacted in the short term but in the long term it should be worth it. Would you agree sorry its a massive decision for me and any help would be much appreciated. Many thanks

Rel cannonical on all my URL's
Hi, sorry if this question has already been asked, but I can't seem to find the correct answer. In my crawling report for the domain: http://www.wellbo.de I get rel cannonical notices. I have redirected all pages of http://wellbo.de to http://www.wellbo.de with a 301 redirect. Where is my error? Why do I get these notices? I hope the image helps. Ep7Rw.jpg
