New site just launched - would appreciate some feedback!
-
Hi,
Some may have seen me around the forum recently asking a few questions about my website which was being re-vamped. Well its now live.
Would love some actionable advice / constructive criticism.
Website background: It started life as a website displaying dates for UK bank holidays, noticed some good traffic/sharing so decided to open it up to UK occasions. This resulted in more traffic and social sharing so over the last month I have re-built the whole website to be responsive and 'I hope' professional / interesting to visitors.
I also opened it up further into other UK dates such as sporting events and festivals - these categories will gain more pages as well as new categories to come. I'm hoping to turn it into a little UK resource for this type of content.
Thank you.

Ive added your idea of links inside table to body content so thanks for that.
Those social buttons are using the addthis service, just styled against the theme of the site. But I see what you mean, im thinking of dropping it altogether and using the sharedcount.com API in a format similar to mashable. It aggregates all social shares into one number and cuts down the button clutter.
Thanks for your help on this, I think the 'true' aim for me is to make my landing pages better than any other I find - I think if I achieve this ill be heading in the right direction.
Ill give it 3 months and share where im at in another post.

How important do you think social sharing for SEO is for this type of content?
I honestly don't know. If you are getting a lot of traffic from social sources then it might pay. Right now you are giving massive amount of page space to social sharing. I would simply use a very sleek AddThis.com widget.
Would say A/B testing for more social shares be a high priority?
I would use AddThis.com widget in an obvious spot. I think that the quality and usefulness of your content will be the major driver of social shares if you use an obvious widget.

Thanks very much for coming over and making some suggestions.
1. Good point, I will create some anchor points in the table to info lower down page. I see what you mean by 700px down, I wanted to put a little content above it because I didnt want Google crawling it and just finding thin content above the fold - I will have a look at this tho and see if I can find away to get the good stuff higher up.

Thanks.

I think that you are off to a good start and have some good content in the Bank Holiday area (I didn't look at others).
If this was my site I would do a couple of things.....
-
On this page http://www.followuk.co.uk/bank-holidays a person must scroll down to see the real content. There is a lot of eyecandy at the top but what people really want is deep. The first bank holiday date is 700 pixels down! I would redesign to lift that up a lot higher.
-
On the bottoms of your pages you have paragraphs that explain the bank holidays. I would link the name of the holiday in the table to those explanations. That will help optimization and allow visitors to BAM... get that info.
Nice work.

Yeah its a good idea, I think I need a few more pages to make it worth the users time but I could see a basic account login then each page containing a add/remove button which works against the users personalised calendar. Maybe even just a cookie instead of an account but guessing it would be super annoying if that cookie got deleted.
We have something kind of half way, so if you entered rootdomain.co.uk/august you can see pages being combined into a group depending on date - once these pages are full enough (9 pages) we are going to create some functionality for the user to select one and view it.
-
Looks fairly nice, clean design. The calendar-part could use some work though. What about a calendar for the current/coming year(s) where you enter all the dates/events and allow users to just use checkboxes to decide which dates to show on the calendar? Would be much easier to use, as it is now it takes way too much work for a visitor to check the dates for several holidays/events/whatnot.

Sometimes I write a post for another site and then post the first 1/3rd on my site to help promote it. Is this a bad idea?
Sometimes I write a post for another site and then post the first 1/3rd on my site to help promote it. Is this a bad idea? When I do that should I be adding a canonical link to the original post? Should I have /make sure the 3rd party site does something? Is there anything else I should do? Thanks in advance.

Why not just use an alias if the only change is a different domain Name?
We are rebranding our store with a new name. We have purchased a NewDomainName. Can I just make the "Old Domain Name" an alias for the "NewDomainName"? The site will not change in any other way than having a new logo. This is an e-commerce site with over 100 categories of artisan made products. So once we move the site, the old domain will be empty. Thank you Stephen

Backlinks in PDF's created on my site causing algo demotion.
I have a few questions. My website allows people to create custom 'puzzle' and education (i.e. "math") worksheets - enter your 'school spelling list' - I can make a crossword or many other puzzles (PDF form) from it. I recently realized that I was being penalized for the backlink I placed in each one. I placed in each PDF ("Created with mydomain.com Crossword maker") - I was linking the "crossword maker" back to my site. BAD! I am now aware of this. I have recently disavowed several hundred backlinks where people have posted those PDF's online - and have started to see a big recovery in ranking and traffic. My questions about my citation: "Created with mydomain.com Crossword maker":
Branding | | Addict
1. Moving forward, can I leave the same citation on each PDF - but just link 'mydomain.com' back to my domain (not the keywords, just the domain)
2. If not, can I just leave the unlinked text on the PDF: i.e. "Created with mydomain.com Crossword maker" -no embeded links at all.
3. Is it OK to assert that they must leave the "citation" (linked/unlinked?) to post them on their website as a part of my terms of use? If not, is there an acceptable way to get credit for giving away free custom content - other than asking for an 'optional' link back? I have thousands more of these that I would need to end up disavowing so knowing exactly what is permissible is extremely important to me moving forward. I have watched this whiteboard Friday: https://moz.com/blog/backlinks-maximize-benefits-avoid-problems-whiteboard-friday (I am looking for clarification on what I can put in the original content I essentially syndicate - the content is different on each and every PDF, except for the citation). Thank you so much for your time and help!0 -
Avoid Keyword in New Domain Name?
We are looking to rebrand our domain name. Our existing domain is www.nyc-officespace-leader.com. We own www.metro-manhattan.com and were hoping to use this domain. The company name is Metro Manhattan Office Space, Inc. Is the fact that the new domain contains "Manhattan" a negative? I know that the fact that it has a hyphen is weak. Manhattan is part of such keywords as "Manhattan office space". Regarding the company name, is the fact that it contains the target phrase "Manhattan office space" bad? Our company name may sound like exact match anchor text and I am not sure what to do about this if anything. I would really prefer to keep our name but it is necessary to change it to improve SEO we will do so. Would it be better to change to a new name like "Integrity Real Estate" which does not contain target phrases or keywords ("real estate" is not a major target phrase as it is to generic) ? Or how something like www.mmos.com for the domain and leave the company name alone? How would I go about finding a company that would assist is in creating an SEO friendly domain name and perhaps a new corporate name if necessary? Thanks, Alan

Branding-Advantages of New Domain
Our current domain (www.nyc-officespace-leader.com) is spammy, using 2 hyphens and several keywords. So we are planning on migrating to a new domain. Our company is Metro Manhattan Office Space, Inc.. We are Manhattan commercial real estate brokers specializing in office and commercial leasing. For 5 years we have owned an alternative domain but never migrated the site to it. The alternative domain is www.metro-manhattan.com. But I am not sure it is a good choice since it contains one hyphen. Any suggestions for creating a strong URL for rebranding? It appears the really good names are already taken. Thanks, Alan

The pros and cons of subdomain or new domain for a new brand?
Hi there Moz experts, We're launching a new brand and product offering for a completely different audience than we've worked with before. We're expected a significant amount of business to come from inbound marketing, so we're wondering whether we should launch the new brand as a subdomain of the parent company or as a completely separate domain. The parent company's website has thousands of inbound links and is over 10 years old, so I'm thinking in the short term it would be easier to get new content ranked there. However, in the long term I think it would be better for the new brand to have a separate TLD. Thoughts or other things I should consider? Thanks!

Site Disappeared For Exact Match Search?
Can anyone help me figure out what is happening to a site I recently set up? The site is http://intervalmanagementgroup.com/ and it completely fell off for an exact match brand name search of "Interval Management Group". It had been climbing to the top spot on page one shortly after launch and has now disappeared from Google while Bing and Yahoo seem to have no problem with it. . . Any insight is much appreciated!

What can i do to regain top 3 for local map listings if I already created a bunch of citation link to my site?
I got hit by a penguin refresh on Oct 5th and lost over 10 #1 rankings. I'm currently #4 on the places listing for my main keyword and really trying to regain top 3 position. I created a bunch of local citation with matching info and really piped out my map listing since it is 100% complete. I'm quite stumped on how to further optimize my map listing to where i can hit top 3 positions. Does anyone have any recommendations on this issue? Thanks Sam
