UK Times Pay wall effect on links?

Hi all
Our PR agency has obtained a few inbound links from the UK's Times website. This is a great website with a very high DA, however they have a pay wall.
My question is does the paywall counteract the efficacy of the links into our site?
It would be good to know because if they aren't having the desired effect on rankings then I'll ask our PR agency to focus their efforts on other national newsapers.

I think that only works for the google news bot but does not work for general crawling and passing pr, But I could be wrong.
But if Martijn is correct, the question is does the uk times allow google bot allow access to that page.
A quick test would be search for a line of text from the article and see if google links to the correct page. If it does not get a hit then either google has not crawled that page yet or can't crawl the page. And if its been a few weeks and it still can't get a hit in google search then it most likely that its not crawlable ( as is a big site you would expect a normal page to have been well crawled in that time frame)
Side note: I think it would be a good test for someone to setup a paywall page which links to a page with no other back links and see if google can pick that page up ( maybe give it anchor text of a load of jibberish and see if that page ranks for that jibberish)

Gavin, I don't know in this case but it shouldn't affect crawling in some cases. For example Google News sitemap could contain a tag (<access>) that tells Google that the page is only available to users with a subscription. So at least that tells them something on how the page is handled. They could still use some work around for Google News to have their pages indexed, like 'cloaking' the page for Google News bot.</access>

I guess my next question is; does a pay wall stop google from crawling a site? Does anyone know?

If google can't crawl the page the link is on then, then it does not exist to google. End of story.
Of course you have to consider direct traffic benefit you get and with the exposure you might get some additional backlinks from other sites (that have read that story).

External links - link to third party sites
Greetings! Actually, got an doubt on linking to external site. The thing, i have working for roof marketers site. They have covered roof products. Each of the products have a page along with major keyword. Actually, i do link from other pages[internally]. Meaning,if i see any main keywords in different page then will link that to corresponding page/product[internally].This is what i am doing to get page rank. Now, my doubt. Some of the pages are having link with main keywords which directs to the third party site those who are really producing the products. But, i remove the third party-link which has with main keywords. Since already the site/my client site having pages for that main keywords. But client really want that link. meaning the links which they have given to direct to third party[product producer] site. So what should i do at this case. Can i just past RAW link like [http://www.thirdpartysite.com] or what do i do. But my client wants that link to be in content area. Would linking to a site in the US from the UK do harm or good if the site being linked to is industry related? i.e. a UK web design company linking to a US web design career site.

Paying to Remove Links?
I emailed a directory asking to have my link removed and they responded that it costs $20. Does anyone have experience paying to remove links? I would never do this on a mass scale, but for individual links is it worthwhile or a waste of money?

Is it worth it to link to sites that link to you in guest posts?
Suppose you published a guest post on a quality site and you link to a previous guest post you have written for another site (which links to you). In theory you could send link juice to the page that links to you for a second order effect. Has anyone seen results from this tactic?

Timing of Adding Links -- Guidance Needed
We have entered into a partnership with one of our sister companies that owns many different small newspapers and their associated websites -- they have agreed to show some of our content on their site along with providing links back to our website. There are 50+ of these websites that we will be getting links from. Does it matter to Google how quickly we add these links to these sites? They are all very legitimate links with unique content provided. We just didn’t know if Google would view it negatively if we added a bunch at one time.
