After 301 redirects average rankings went down a little. Any idea?
-
We have changed the design of a website, from an oscommerce site to a new responsive website with customized programming.
After the 301 redirects we have lost 1 to 2 positions in Google Rankings of the most visited categories.
This are real data
<colgroup><col span="5" width="80"></colgroup>
| page | brand | page | CTR | average position |
| old | fagor | http://www.electrorecambio.es/tienda/fagor-m-41.html | 15% | 6,6 |
| new | fagor | http://www.electrorecambio.es/fagor | 13% | 7,2 |
| old | teka | http://www.electrorecambio.es/tienda/teka-m-39.html | 12% | 7,2 |
| new | teka | http://www.electrorecambio.es/teka | 9% | 8,8 |
| old | balay | http://www.electrorecambio.es/tienda/balay-m-81.html | 12% | 7,4 |
| new | balay | http://www.electrorecambio.es/balay | 11% | 8,6 |
| old | bosch | http://www.electrorecambio.es/tienda/bosch-m-44.html | 10% | 7,4 |
| new | bosch | http://www.electrorecambio.es/bosch | 8% | 11 |Edited: As this table is not shown properly I have added an image
For you to check the old page you can see the old urls in the folder tienda2. For example
http://www.electrorecambio.es/tienda/bosch-m-44.html
can be checked in
http://www.electrorecambio.es/tienda2/bosch-m-44.html
I would like to know if you see any important information that could justify this drop down in rankings
Thanks!!!

I just did a similar migration Oscommerce to Magento, because the site was so big took a while for Google indexed all the new URLs even with the 301. We lost a little bit of traffic in the first 3 weeks but in the forth week we recovered the same traffic we had before the new site went up and in the following weeks we just kept growing. Right now we have 20% more traffic.
The drop in ranking it's normal right after a big migration, when Seomoz became Moz they also saw a few weeks of drop in the organic traffic. I wouldn't worry too much about it yet. Just make sure your on page optimizations are well done in the new website and wait for big G complete your new website index.

To go along with that, when did you set up the redirects? It can take 2-3 weeks for rankings to bounce back to where they once were.
In addition, you changed the site design/structure which could also affect rankings. Perhaps a paragraph of text used to be near the top of the page which helped you rank well but in the new design, it is positioned lower so gets less relevance score.
Or maybe the new layout has more repeating elements (dupe text) or more links per page (decreasing authority per link). There are lots of things that could potentially explain the slight decrease.
I would give it a couple weeks to see how the rankings bounce back and re-evaluate then.

It looks to me like Google has indexed the new URL version of the page yet but the ones ranking seem to be the old versions of the URLs and those are 301-redirecting, which can be slow, depending on where the searcher is located. It could be a speed issue that's causing the drop in rankings.
I didn't see a canonical tag on the new version of the pages. Adding those could help Google identify which page is the preferred version. It's going to take time for those old versions of your URLs to drop out of Google's index. You could use the URL remove tool in GWT, but if it's a large site this can be cumbersome.
Just some thoughts, not definitive by any means. I'm am curious to hear what others might have to say.

Should I do a redirect
Hello, I am building a new website with a new web address for subpages. The domain name stays the same. I am wondering if I should do redirect to the few pages that have an outside link going to them. I noticed all my subpage that don't have any external link have an authority of 18. I only have 1 subpage that has 2 external links and 1 of them has a spam score of 32 and then other one of 1. My website is about a 100 pages. What should I do for my subpages redirect , not redirect, redirect only the ones that have external links ? Thank you,

Is it ok to 301 redirect this previously algorithmicly penalised site?
Hi All, Is it OK to 301 redirect site A to site B? Site A: http://goo.gl/P9Zp2y Site B: http://goo.gl/ySDCzb The story - in 2013 site a seemed to be penalised with some kind of anchor text algorithm penalty - SEO couldnt fix, so created site B and turned site A into a holding page with a no follow link to new site. SEO company worked on disavow file etc, implemented in late 2013 301 redirect site A to B in late 2013 - SEO advised to stop 301 about 8 weeks later... This was my fault i didnt realise the implications of a redirect... Stopped the redirect, but too late, as site B dropped in rankings in early 2014 - new disavow files uploaded to both sites, but damage seems done now. No longer have a SEO company, and i would ideally like to 301 redirect site A to B, as it looks messy having a holding page - but wanted to check if SEO would still strongly advise against that? please advise James

Help understanding 301 domain redirect
Can anyone help me understand a specific process of a 301 redirecting a domain. Here is what I would like to know.... When you 301 redirect a site, most if not all the links follow to your new site. But how does this process happen? 1.When Google sees the new domain does it simply apply the backlink profile of the old site to the new one? 2. Does it have to re-crawl all the links one by one and apply them to the new domain? 3. or something else?

For some reason IT cannot 301 redirect the old home page to the new website home page. At suggestions? Perhaps canonical it? Meantime the old home page copy has been changed to say the company name has changed and a link to the new website. Any help greatly appreciated.

301 redirect Actinic HTML pages to ASP. Achievable?
Hi - I'm hoping someone can help me resolve an issue in relation to setting up 301 redirects. The client to whom I provide SEO services is being told by his developers that setting up 301 redirects is not achievable from old HTML pages to his new site running on a Windows server. My feeling is that it should be fine, and I have found documentation online that seems to support this, however I'm no developer, certainly no server admin, so I was wondering if anyone could advise me? Is it feasible to set up 301 redirects from Actinic sites (HTML pages) to a new site in NOP commerce running on a Windows server (ASP pages). Thank you for your help! Iain

Duplicate Title Tags & Duplication Meta Description after 301 Redirect
Today, I was checking my Google webmaster tools and found 16,000 duplicate title tags and duplicate meta description. I have investigate for this issue and come to know about as follow. I have changed URL structure for 11,000 product pages on 3rd July, 2012 and set up 301 redirect from old product pages to new product pages. Google have started to crawl my new product pages but, De-Indexing of old URLs are quite slower. That's why I found this issue on Google webmaster tools. Can anyone suggest me, How can I increase ratio of De-Indexing for old URLs? OR any other suggestions? How much time Google will take to De-Index old URLs from web search?

Canonical or 301 redirect, that is the question?
So my site has duplicate content issues because of the index.html and the www and non www version of the site. What's the best way to deal with this without htaccess? Is it a 301 redirect or is it the canonical, or is it both?
