Does a Website Overlay Hurt Ranking?
-
We are looking into personalizing visits on our website. Rather than to write Tb of code on each page, we want to use a little line of Java script on the page, that would allow to place overlay on the site, depending on the visitor. Example: Change the home page picture when a returning visitor comes back on the website and show him/her a different picture bases upon the pages he/she visited prior.
Would that overlay be caught by Google and would G have a problem with that?
We all know about cloaking, but G does not penalize for heat mapping overlays, for example. Or not to my knowledge they don't.
Thanks all for your personal insights!

Thank you Travis.
You are correct, Cloaking is what I am concerned about.
However, there is so much software coming out, that one questions whether an overlay from a 'respected' provider (CrazyEgg and alike) would be ignored by Google for cloaking purposes.
The software we wanted to test is Evergage.
Has anyone tried out this (type of) software and seen Google response from it?
Thanks guys for your opinions.

Showing search engines one thing and showing users another is likely always a bad thing. Your benign use case has probably already been used by nefarious folks. The Googles probably already know what Piwik, Crazy Egg and the like look like.
The Googles doesn't know Bob's Script. It would probably look like cloaking. It's actually displaying something different to a user, than what would be displayed to a search engine. That is the definition of cloaking.
I'm not saying there aren't ways around this. I just don't endorse the practice.

Ranking of non-homepage leads to decrease in website ranking?
Hi all, Google picks up a non-homepage to rank for primary keyword where homepage is actually optimised to rank for same keyword. This means Google is ignoring the actual page and ranking other page. Does this scenario means that we are ranking lower as the homepage is not considered here? We may rank much better if homepage is preferred by Google? Thanks

For a real estate website, is a different mobile site warranted vs a responsive site?
I researched the major real estate websites: Zillow, Trulia, Remax, Keller Williams, Century 21, etc. They all have a separate mobile site and not a responsive one. The client wants it to be easy to search for properties from a smartphone. Is it possible to get a responsive version of a real estate website on a smartphone?

Rankings Tanked After Redesign
This is my first Q & A, so thank you for your extended patience. Long story short, we moved platforms from Volusion to Big Commerce. We had a highly recommended company do our new redesign along with all applicable 301 redirects. They told us to expect a slight dip in traffic, but that it should bounce back before long.... especially with a cleaner, better organized site and better URL structure. Our new site went live on 2/8/13 and as of today, 4/17/13 our rankings are not getting any better. We've went from page 1 position 5 or so to midway down page 2 and even on to 3 for the same terms. I had stressed, and even paid extra for an extensive 301 redirect add-on, to ensure our rankings took as little of a beating as possible. Now I have no idea where to even begin. Since the launch, our Organic Google traffic has decreased by a whopping 82%! Any insight is very, very much appreciated.

What is the best way to point newly built website on new domain name to the original more well known domain?
Live website on abc.com domain is being totally redone and moved to a new platform. to facilitate full testing and compliance, the new look and content was built on a different url - xyz.com for example. Now that all content is approved and testing, we want people visiting the abc.com domain to see the xyz.com website without necessarily redirecting abc.com to xyz.com What is the best to do this? Thanks all
