404 Errors in WMT
-
Currently my website have about 10,000 404 errors for my site as wordpress is adding /feed/ to the end of all url in my website.. Should I restrict /feed/ from the robot txt?
-
Yea would have my developer look at the issue for me thank you..
-
Thanks for the info via direct message. As far as I know, those /feed/ URLs should not return 404's. I checked my site for example;
http://www.evolvingseo.com/2014/08/15/hiring-evolver-number-one/feed/ - and that returns a 200 OK.
I am not sure why WordPress would be doing this to be honest. Do you have a developer working with you? Or if it's a Theme you could contact the theme vendor about it.

Hi There
As mentioned above - it would be optimal to see an example - or if you can't share the site, just a generic example. It may be that wordpress is adding feed URLs where they don't need to be, so we'd need to take a good look.

Good morning!
Before you go cutting 10,000 404's I personally would try and address why your getting 404 errors for your RSS Feed.
Having 10,000 errors is a broad number, plenty of those could be duplicates, and some of those are probably not just related to the RSS Feed. If there is anything I have learned in SEO is that I can almost never use broad strokes when painting, and if I do, I have to be absolutely SURE what my brush is covering. A little while back Matt Cutts made a video about RSS feeds and the benefit they can have to websites. They are not as important as the blog itself, but still, it's a nice feature that you could take advantage if you already have.
The reason I bring this up; if you make the broad statement the restrict /feed/ how to you know for certain that you aren't cutting off other pages that have helped?
I don't know enough about your website to truly advise but I would take a look at all of those errors, put them into a spreadsheet and first get rid of all duplicates and pull out all of the /feed/ 404's to try and get as specific of a number as possible.
Look in your referrals in GWMT and GA and see if your RSS feed is bringing you traffic/referrals at all. If it isn't helping then I think you can put a 410 code for the /feed/ although as pointed out to me, there really isn't much benefit for using the 410 over just letting the 404s die on their own.
Hope that helps a little!

Google Search Console Showing 404 errors for product pages not in sitemap?
We have some products with url changes over the past several months. Google is showing these as having 404 errors even though they are not in sitemap (sitemap shows the correct NEW url). Is this expected? Will these errors eventually go away/stop being monitored by Google?

Pdf page titles and descriptions errors
In my weekly crawl report I suddenly have a huge number of title not found and missing page descriptions errors for all of my pdf files. The pdfs do have a page title (defined in the file/properties tab) However these page titles are not being picked up by the crawler or google. Any ideas how do I fix this? ( I am using the Adrobat 9 Distiller)

Crawl Errors In Webmaster Tools
Hi Guys, Searched the web in an answer to the importance of crawl errors in Webmaster tools but keep coming up with different answers. I have been working on a clients site for the last two months and (just completed one months of link bulding), however seems I have inherited issues I wasn't aware of from the previous guy that did the site. The site is currently at page 6 for the keyphrase 'boiler spares' with a keyword rich domain and a good onpage plan. Over the last couple of weeks he has been as high as page 4, only to be pushed back to page 8 and now settled at page 6. The only issue I can seem to find with the site in webmaster tools is crawl errors here are the stats:- In sitemaps : 123 Not Found : 2,079 Restricted by robots.txt 1 Unreachable: 2 I have read that ecommerce sites can often give off false negatives in terms of crawl errors from Google, however, these not found crawl errors are being linked from pages within the site. How have others solved the issue of crawl errors on ecommerce sites? could this be the reason for the bouncing round in the rankings or is it just a competitive niche and I need to be patient? Kind Regards Neil

Robots.txt file getting a 500 error - is this a problem?
Hello all! While doing some routine health checks on a few of our client sites, I spotted that a new client of ours - who's website was not designed built by us - is returning a 500 internal server error when I try to look at the robots.txt file. As we don't host / maintain their site, I would have to go through their head office to get this changed, which isn't a problem but I just wanted to check whether this error will actually be having a negative effect on their site / whether there's a benefit to getting this changed? Thanks in advance!

Do sites really need a 404 page?
We have people posting broken links to our site is this looking us link juice as they link to 404 pages. We could redirect to the homepage or just render the home page content, in both cases we can still display a clear page not found message. Is this legal (white hat).
