A/B testing entire website VS Seo issues
-
I'm familar with A/B testing variations of a page but I'd like to A/B test a new designs version of a e-commerce site. I´m wondering about the best way to test with SEO concerns... this is what I´ve in mind right now, any suggestion?
- Use parameters to make version B different from A version.
- Redirect 50% of the users with 302 ( or javascript would be a better way?)
- Use noindex in the B pages.
- Use rel=canonical in the B pages pointing to A version.
- In the end use 301 redirect to all B pages to A urls.
PS: We can´t use subdomain and i don´t wanna use robots.txt file to protect the new design from competitors.
I´d love any suggestions and tips about it - thanks folks

My main experience with A/B is via Google Experiments and it looks like they highlight option 4:
To ensure that serving your variation pages does not have a negative impact on your site's SEO rankings, you can use the
rel="canonical"
link attribute on your variation pages.rel="canonical"
is a signal to search engines that the content of your variation pages is essentially the same as that of your original page, and that you would prefer that search engines index your original page rather than the variations you're using in your experiment.Source: https://support.google.com/analytics/answer/2613318
If you roll out rel=canonical correctly then this seems to be your safest bet in Google's eyes. My main experience is with split-testing single pages, but theoretically this should work out okay with the correct use of canonical. If you're really not sure you could roll out a mini-test with a couple of key pages first?

SEO: open source e-commerece vs. off the shelf
I'm trying to decide on a web development company. Both would do our CMS with Wordpress, but for the e-commerce platform one would use shopify (off the shelf) and the other would use Woo-Commerce (open source). SEO wise is there any benefit of going one way or the other? I am worried the off the shelf (shopify) would be weaker because it would be hosted on a different server than the CMS, plus I think the url structure would be less flexible through shopify (keywords would be further down url structure). Thanks, Dan

& tags, any SEO issues?
Hi - the content on our corporate website is pretty technical, and we include chemical element codes in the text that users would search on (like S02, C02, etc.) A lot of times our engineers request that we list the codes correctly, with a on the last number. Question - does adding this code into the keyword affect SEO? The code would look like SO2. Thanks.

Canonical Issue?
Hi, I was using the On Page Report Card Tool here on SEOMOZ for the following page: http://www.priceline.com/eventi-a-kimpton-hotel-new-york-city-new-york-ny-1614979-hd.hotel-reviews-hotel-guides and it claims there is a canonical issue or improper use of it. I looked at the element and it seems to be fine: <link rel="canonical" href="http://www.priceline.com/eventi-a-kimpton-hotel-new-york-city-new-york-ny-1614979-hd.hotel-reviews-hotel-guides" /> Can you spot the issue and how it would be fixed? Thanks. Eddy

Site redesign/cleanup SEO Advice
Hi Everyone, New member here, but loving it. I have some questions that I couldn't find the answers to. We are radically changing our site. Over the years it has accumulated thousands of garbage files, WP installations, etc. We enjoy good rankings for lots of our keywords. Are there articles/advice/suggestions on how to do this with the least harm to our rankings? One of the largest concerns is for pages currently ranked and we want to move them to blog posts with a preceding /blog/ in the url. The filename, title, etc. will all remain identical. the url is www.wulongforlife.com Sure appreciate any advice. Thanks in advance.

Using a table with tabs to display information on website, work for seo?
When displaying data using a table, and a tab format to seperate different options, for example http://www.mousetraining.co.uk/ms-training/microsoft-excel-training-courses.html - under Standard Excel Training Course Levels / Training Details / Locations / Schedule - at the bottom of the page. Would search engines pick up the keywords from each of the tabs, or are they hidden?? Thanks
