I want to upgrade to Universal Analytics but already using GTM and I have few queries...
-
Hello Experts,
I want to migrate from classical to universal analytics and i am already using GTM for my ecommerce site. I have small 6 queries :-
-
After login to google analytics from admin section i have to transfer property to universal analytics ? right?
-
I have to wait either 24 hours or 48 hours before retagging or doing any changes in UA. So how can i know my property transferred sucessfully?
-
After property transferred to universal analytics, i have to configure the session timeout and campaign timeout periods via the Google Analytics Admin page. ( By default,
sessions end after 30 minutes and campaigns end after 6 months ) is it okay if i don't change this settings? -
As of now in my analytic i have configured google adwords, google webmaster and google merchant. In analytic i have also set custom alerts, goals, funnels, enchance link attribution, eCommerce etc but google analytics code i have already added in google tag manager, so i have to some manual changes for all such things? or all the things i.e goals, funnel, alerts etc will be transferred automatically at time of transferring the property?
-
In Google tag manager i have already configured following things :-
Tags :-
- Name - Google adwords Conversion Tracking b) Type - Adwords Conversion Tracking c) Rules - order sucessful page
- Name - Google Analytic Page view Tracking b) Type - Classic Google Analytics c) Rules - All pages
- Name - Google Analytic Conversion Tracking b) Type - Classic Google Analytics c) Rules - order sucessful page
- Name - Twitter Conversion Tracking b) Type - Custom HTML tag c) Rules - order sucessful page
So at time of transferring property all this will be transferred automatically?
- Also at thank you page of my website I have scripts for goal setting, Affiliator, so there is no relation of this with migration right?
Kind co-operation in the matter of highly be appreciated. So please help me!
Regards,
Jackin! -

This means your GA installation is still on the old platform, and you will need to manually upgrade GA to Universal Analytics before you can begins n the rest of the process.
The button you see on the page should only require a few clicks to start the process.
Once you upgrade, you can take as long as you want to upgrade the actual code on your website. The existing code should keep recording properly until you're ready to change it.

Thanks a lot for a wonderful answer. I really appreciate your effort for a great long and satisfactory answer.
I have query for only 1st point i.e. When i click on admin section in property it is showing - "Universal Analytic Upgrade" below that it is showing "Transfer not started" (PFA ) and as you said "Click over to "Tracking Code" and see if it says analytics.js or ga.js. If it says ga.js, you'll need to do this manually and you haven't been auto-upgraded."
But when i click on tracking info it shows me following things -
Upgrade to Universal Analytics
Get more accurate data and access to new tools with Universal Analytics.
Learn more at the Universal Analytics Upgrade Center. To start the upgrade, transfer a property to the Universal Analytics processing technology.
Click Universal Analytics Upgrade to start the process for this property.
Only users with edit permission can transfer a property. Each property must be transferred individually. And at last it is showing -
This is your tracking code. Copy and paste it into the code of every page you want to track.
ORI simply click on Transfer which is showing me -Transfer to Universal Analytics
Click Transfer to transfer this property to the Universal Analytics processing technology. This is the only action you need to take to complete this step.
Google Analytics will take 24 - 48 hours to complete the transfer.
To ensure you continue to collect high quality data, don’t make any changes to your tracking code until the transfer is complete. After the transfer is complete, any data you collect using the old tracking code (ga.js) will be processed using the Universal Analytics technology. To get all the benefits of Universal Analytics, implement the new tracking code (analytics.js).
Any data collected before the transfer will be saved, and will still be available in your reports.
Thanks!

1) After login to google analytics from admin section i have to transfer property to universal analytics ? right?
Click over to "Tracking Code" and see if it says analytics.js or ga.js. If it says ga.js, you'll need to do this manually and you haven't been auto-upgraded.
2) I have to wait either 24 hours or 48 hours before retagging or doing any changes in UA. So how can i know my property transferred sucessfully?
If I recall correctly, you can fire Classic GA code into an upgraded account, but you can't fire Universal code into an account that hasn't been upgraded. So - if you have to do the manual process - you want to let the process finish and roll out the new Universal code after it's done.
3) After property transferred to universal analytics, i have to configure the session timeout and campaign timeout periods via the Google Analytics Admin page. ( By default, sessions end after 30 minutes and campaigns end after 6 months ) is it okay if i don't change this settings?
You don't have to edit these unless you want a different default setting. Read more about these settings at https://support.google.com/analytics/answer/2795871?hl=en.
4) As of now in my analytic i have configured google adwords, google webmaster and google merchant.
Your connections to Adwords, Webmaster tools, and Merchant Center should be fine.
Your goals should be fine, so should your custom alerts.
For E-Commerce, you will need to check the "Enable Enhanced Ecommerce Features" checkbox under "More Settings" in your Tag Manager tag for GA. Enhanced Link Attribution no longer shows up on any of my GTM accounts so I think they either removed this or made it default. I can't say for sure, but a few posts in webmaster forums confirm this uncertainty.
You may still need to do some custom programming on your transaction confirmation pages to track e-commerce transactions properly. They won't record automatically unless you're using a shopping cart/platform that fires them for you.
If you have any event tracking code on your site (eg file downloads, or outbound clicks), you can upgrade it to the Universal event tracking syntax, or you can kill them off, but you have to rebuild the event tracking in GTM if you do that. Either way is fine, but pick one or the other.
5) In Google tag manager i have already configured following tags:
- Name - Google adwords Conversion Tracking b) Type - Adwords Conversion Tracking c) Rules - order sucessful page
- Name - Google Analytic Page view Tracking b) Type - Classic Google Analytics c) Rules - All pages
- Name - Google Analytic Conversion Tracking b) Type - Classic Google Analytics c) Rules - order sucessful page
- Name - Twitter Conversion Tracking b) Type - Custom HTML tag c) Rules - order sucessful page
So at time of transferring property all this will be transferred automatically?
#1 and #4 should work fine if you have them set up correctly in GTM.
For both GA tags, you'll need to switch them to Universal manually, instead of Classic GA.
As mentioned above, for the GA conversion tracking tag, you might have to take care of some coding on the website to push sales data into the data layer for GTM, which can then be used to fire off the GA transaction tracking.
6) Also at thank you page of my website I have scripts for goal setting, Affiliator, so there is no relation of this with migration right?
Unfortunately I can't answer this one - leaving it for someone else.
===================
Read through these three guides a few times before you do the process to make sure you have a full grasp on the conversion process - then get started:
-
Any help please? Only one reply which seems incomplete or not satisfactory.
-
@Martijn, didn't get you exactly!
You mean from google analytic if i click on transferred data then everything will be done automatically now? i.e. all my above points 3, 4, 5, 6 ?
There is no need of developer right? All things will do done automatically?
-
1 and 2 are not necessary anymore, it seems like the Google Analytics documentation hasn't been updated in a while and as all properties have been transferred automatically you don't need to do this manually anymore.

Unsolved Google Analytics (GA4) recommendations for SEO analysis?
Guides on Moz and elsewhere mostly refer to Google Analytics' Universal Analytics (UA). However, UA is being replaced with GA4, and the interface, options, and reporting are very different. Can you recommend a clear, thorough, and effective walkthrough of how to set up useful SEO reports in GA4? Is there a simple tool you recommend that will help connect historical data from UA to GA4 when GA4 is the only option available? If there's no simple tool, what values do you recommend retaining from UA for effective historical reporting? How would you use them? At minimum for reporting, I'd want to show month-to-month changes and year-to-year changes (in percentages and in real numbers) for the following: all site visits all organic visits organic visits as a percentage of all site visits organic visits that led to a specific goal completion organic visits that led to any goal completion Thanks in advance for your help!

Google Analytics Campaign Tracking overriding each other
Howdy, fellow mozzers. So, here is the situation: Let's say someone comes to the website through Organic Google Search, and first thing they see is the banner on the website, on a click of which it takes you to a promotional landing page. I have this banner being tracked with GA campaigns. Now, here are my questions: If that user makes a purchase, which source / medium it will be assigned to? Organic/google or website/banner? (as far as i understand it assigns it to website/banner) If that's the case, is there way to find out afterwords where the website/banner sessions came initially from? If there is no such way, how shall i setup the tracking to be able to see wherre the initial visit to the website came from, yet also track how many people clicked on the banner and made a purchase? Thanks 🙂

Google Analytics and Bounce Rates Query - Should I block access from foreign countries ?
Hi , When I look at my google analytics for my UK Website, I can see alot of visits come from outside the UK , i.e Brazil and USA. Both of which give me almost 100% bounce rates from people visiting from there. I am wondering, if google looks at bounce rates with regards to ranking factors and should I therefore block access to my site from visitors outside the UK ?... Would this help increase my rankings ? Given that we only serve uk customers, I cant see any benefit of allowing non uk customers the ability to see the site . what does people think ? thanks pete

Testing IP Exclusion Filters in Google Analytics
(I hope I haven't missed something simple 😉 I have add IP exclusion filters in Google Analytics. What I haven't been able to determine is how to test to see if it is working. I'd imagine there would be a dip in traffic but if a site is low volume it might not even register. Thanks!

Registration tracking with Google Analytics
Hi everyone, I want to track user registrations with Google Analytics for a customer's website. The thing is after registration visitors are not directed to a specific page, so I can't set it as a goal. I thought of tracking submit button with event tracking, but that data would not be true as a visitor may click it more than once, and there's the login with facebook and twitter thing. Before convincig customer to create a registration confirmation page, I want to make sure there's no other way as they don't want to make any changes to the current website. Any ideas?

Set up Google Analytics by product category
Does anyone know if it's possible to set up Google Analytics data by product category? We sell roughly twenty product categories on our ecommerce site. We can look at our analytics performance for the site overall and drill down to specific pages, but what we really want to see is our performance by product category. Our product categories can include up to 5000 products. Any pointers on how to do this?

Google Analytics session update question
Hello, With reference to seomoz blog post - http://www.seomoz.org/blog/panda-24-and-analytics-session-update-rolled-out-simultaneously#jtc151292 , i would like clarification about the following - User searches Google for "Product Name" and clicks on your AdWords advertisement. User leaves site and searches a few more times, click on competition and comparing prices and features. User ultimately decides to with your product, Googles "Your Brand + Product Name", clicks your organic listing, and buys the product. This whole process takes less than 30 minutes. "Your Brand + Product Name" will appear in your organic keyword report with 1 visit. My question is whether "Product Name" will also appear in organic keyword report with 1 visit if the visitor is not signed in. ( as search won't be encrypted ) Thanks
