I have a duplicate content on my Moz crawler, but google hasn't indexed those pages: do I still need to get rid of the tags?
-
I received an urgent error from the Moz crawler that I have duplicate content on my site due to the tags I have. For example:
http://www.1forjustice.com/graves-amendment/
The real article found here: http://www.1forjustice.com/car-accident-rental-car/
I didn't think this was a big deal, because when I looked at my GWT these pages weren't indexed (picture attached).
Question: should I bother fixing this from an SEO perspective? If Google isn't indexing the pages, then am I losing link juice?
-
It will fully depend on the purpose of each page. In the example case you mentioned, that will be the best solution, but canonical tags =/= noindex tags. I would only suggest using canonical tags if there's a large amount of similar content between pages.
For noindex, I generally don't use them unless I specifically don't want a certain page to be indexed (highly-targeted PPC landing pages are a good example) - you usually don't want to deindex pages without a reason/goal.
If there's lots of duplicate content issues on your site, here are two possible options for cleaning them up, from most ideal to least:
- Identify duplicate pages and revise the content itself so that it's sufficiently unique. Remove all noindex and canonical tags unless they were already in place for another reason.
- Use canonical tags to consolidate two or more pages. This will essentially act as a 301 redirect while still allowing users to view the canonicalized pages if they come across them. Your 'best' page of the group shouldn't have any canonical tag on it. This approach should only be used for duplicate content-related issues, not as a substitute for proper redirects if that's what the situation calls for.
Either way, I would remove the noindex tags from your pages unless they were specifically put there for a reason. If you've noticed a bunch, make sure there isn't a toggle or checkbox in you CMS' admin panel that is adding it by default to new pages.
Good luck!

Excellent! Thank you, so do I have to go through and add a canonical tags to all of the tagged pages? Sounds like it will take a while, but it also sounds like I don't have many choices.

You should be relatively safe from duplicate content issues at the moment, however you're leaving some 'link juice' on the table since whatever equity is in the noindexed page is remaining with it.
If you want to consolidate the pages from a search engine point of view, but still have them both accessible on your site, then you should remove the noindex from the page and add a canonical tag on the less-important page (pointing to the other page). The more important page won't need any additional tags.
The page with the canonical tag won't be accessible from search engines if you do this, so another route is to develop the content on each page a bit more so that they're more dissimilar; you wouldn't need any tags in this case.

Excellent response. So would I go through and add the canonical tag to all tag pages?
This duplicate content won't hurt my site because those pages aren't indexed right?

I'm not sure if I understand the question, but the reason the Graves Amendment page isn't being indexed isn't due to duplicate content, it's because of the meta noindex tag on there:
Removing that from the page should get it indexed. If the pages have very similar copy, with slight nuances, I would use a canonical tag to consolidate all of the equity into the 'primary' page to help avoid any duplicate content issues. Hope that helps!

What is the difference between my pages' keyword rank and keyword-specific SERP?
I've been tasked with identifying high volume keywords for products our company sells and optimizing our copy and listings to rank higher on Google. The Keyword Explorer and On-Page Grader have been fantastic for this, but as I write my reports, i'm not sure whether SERP or Moz's keyword page rank would be more accurate for reporting results and movement. For instance, one of our product pages ranks #12 for the highest (relevant) volume keyword, but when looking at the SERP analysis for that keyword, our product page actually shows up at #7 down the list. I've tried naturally searching in Google in case it was an issue of private results based on my user data but it seems to give the same result. Am I conflating two different tools? Or is the Moz rank just an estimate?

Duplicate Content
Hello, I'm managing a site which shows as having duplicate page issues (in the crawl analyser) for 3 pages. Basically the site is offering 3 different options of the same product so depending on which size you select, you are directed to the relevant page. These 3 pages are basically identical apart from a slight difference in copy regarding the size (small, medium, large) Is this likely to be a big issue regarding SEO, and what would the moz community suggest re this? Thank you!

Duplicate Content for Default Document Domains
I've noticed recently that within the Moz Crawl Report I keep seeing duplicate content for one of our pages that pulls from a default document. The pages are product pages, one ending in releases/ and the other ending in releases/index and are both identical pages. Normally in these situations I would prefer to make sure that every link is being sent to the releases/ page, however according to Moz, the releases/index page is actually ranking better and has a higher internal link count. Can someone advise me on the best way to deal with this situation? Hopefully I've explained myself well enough! Thanks Sam

My site is http://skigenie.com and is full of unique and hand written content,. Are there any wordpress plugins that will add titles etc to my pages (some of the added ones are custom)? Any help would be much appreciated!

Duplicate page content on / and index.php
Hi I am new to SEOmoz and in the crawl diagnostics for one of my clients it came back duplicate content on the homepage www.myclient.co.uk and on the www.myclient.co.uk/index.php which is obviously the same page. I understand that the key is to do a 301 redirect from the index to /, however how will I know that this will not just create an ever ending loop on the server? From your experience how is the best way to tackle this crawl error? Also is there a specific question that I need to ask the server?

Duplicate content error?
I am getting a duplicate content error for the following pages: http://www.bluelinkerp.com/products/accounting/index.asp http://www.bluelinkerp.com/products/accounting/ But, of course, the 2nd link is just an automatic redirect to the index file, is it not? Why is it thinking it is a different URL? See image. NJfxA.png

I've got quite a few "Duplicate Page Title" Errors in my Crawl Diagnostics for my Wordpress Blog
Title says it all, is this an issue? The pages seem to be set up properly with Rel=Canonical so should i just ignore the duplicate page title erros in my Crawl Diagnostics dashboard? Thanks

Crawl Diagnostics returning duplicate content based on session id
I'm just starting to dig into crawl diagnostics and it is returning quite a few errors. Primarily, the crawl is indicating duplicate content (page titles, meta tags, etc), because of a session id in the URL. I have set-up a URL parameter in Google Webmaster Tools to help Google recognize the existence of this session id. Is there any way to tell the SEOMoz spider the same thing? I'd like to get rid of these errors since I've already handled them for the most part.
