Article section on site or blog?
-
So, I've just started using MOZ since I've decided I wanna be an "expert" in SEO.
I run a couple of successful websites in Denmark and I've had some SEO guy do some SEO a few years back, but now I wanna learn this myself.I've already read a lot of books, blogs on the subject and talked with several SEO "experts".
Anyways, I have a concrete "problem" which I need some help on deciding what to do. Its the same issue / dilemma on all my sites.
Dilemma
On my site i have a menu-section called Articles and tips. As the name implies it's basically articles and tips on subjects related to the site.
The articles are both informal for the users and I also use these to attract new users on specific keywords.
The articles are not "spam" articles or quickly made articles, the actually give good information to the users and are wellwritten and so.I've hired a girl to create more articles, so there will be a good flow on articles, interviews and so on soon.
- Some SEO guys tells me, that I should create and use a external blog "instead" and post the articles there instead of on my site. (ex www.newsiteblog.com)
- And another SEO guy tells me that I should run a blog on my own site (ex www.ownsite.com/blog) , where I post the articles.
I have a really hard time deciding what is the best way, since I hear all kinds of ideas, and really dont know who to trust.
My own idea is, that it seems "stupid" to take content from the site and put on external blog.
Then I would also have to create a new blog, and point links from that to my site and so.Any of you guys have any ideas?
Sorry for my bad english.

Hi Andy,
Thanks for a very good answer. That makes sense.
Ill keep my article section and the interview section. My current system is "simple". so it doesnt support all the features a word-press blog have and people can't comment on the articles directly on the site. That might be a problem?
In that content a sorta like blog-system would be better, but ill stick to what I have for now then.
Thanks.

Firstly welcome to the world of SEO, but the answer is pretty simple and I don't know why anyone who knows SEO would tell you any different.
If your site / CMS allow is, have them all on your site otherwise you are creating more work for yourself.
If the articles are on your site, the DA will pass down to the article pages. Google ranks pages based on your customer experiences, so if they have visited a blog article on your site through a long tail keyword and then want to actually purchase your services. If they type in 'x', Google will remember they have been to your site and interacted (so long as it looked like they had a good experience) Google will rank your other pages higher, potentially leading to more conversions and traffic.
Also you only have one brand to manage and not two, if someone wants to link to one of your detailed and informative blog articles then this link also passes weight back to your home page.
I would always say where possible have the blog on your main site, the only time I would suggest not to is if your current site can't support it.
Hope this is useful, I have only given the key reasons why you should put it on /blog (and it doesn't have to be called blog, you can name it anything you like, articles etc). But there are far more reasons for keeping it all on one domain.
Without knowing the company that recommend putting it on a new site I feel unfair commenting about them, but maybe they was thinking they could get you to pay for a brand new additional site and get some extra revenue for themselves - like I said I don't know them so don't like commenting about other peoples businesses if I don't know them - but that would be my only logical thinking of why they would want you to have a second site.
Thanks
Andy

Is my site penalized by Google?
Let's say my website is aaaaa.com and company name is aaaaa Systems. When I search Google aaaaa my site do not come up at all. When I search for "aaaaa Systems" it comes up. But in WMT I see quite a few clicks from aaaaa as keyword. Most of the traffic is brand keywords only. I never received any manual penalty in WMT ever. Is the site penalized or regular algorithm issues?

Is the Tool Forcing Sites to Link Out?
Hi I have a tool that I wish to give to sites, it allows the user to get an accurate idea of their credit score with out giving away any personal data and with out having a credit search done on their file. Due to the way the tool works and to make the implementation on other peoples sites as simple as possible the tool remains hosted by me and a one line piece of Javascript code just needs to be added to the code of the site wishing to use the tool. This code includes a link to my site to call the information from my server to allow the tool to show and work on the other site. My questions are: Could this cause a problem with Google as far as their link quality goes? - Are we forcing people to give us a backlink to use the tool? (in the eyes of Google) or will Google not be able to read the Javascript / will ignore the link for SEO purposes? Should I make the link in the code Nofollow? If I should make the link a Nofollow any tips on how to make the most of the opportunity from a link building or SEO point of view? Thanks for your help

De Index Section of Page?
Hey all! We're having a couple of issues with a certain section of our page that we don't want to index. Basically, our cross sells change really quickly, and big G is ranking them and linking to them even when they've long gone. Is it possible to put some kind of no index tag for a specific section of the page? See below 🙂 http://www.freestylextreme.com/uk/Home/Brands/DC-Shoe-Co-/Mens-DC-Shoe-Co-Hoodies-and-Sweaters/DC-Black-Rob-Dyrdek-Official-Sweater.aspx Thanks!

SEO friendly blog.
i've read somewhere that if you list too many links/articles on one page, google doesn't crawl all of them. In fact, Google will only crawl up to 100 links/articles or so. Is that true? If so, how do I go about creating a page or blog that will be SEO friendly and capable of being completely crawled by google?

Site comparison - what is wrong with me?
www.bcspeakers.com/ vs www.psbspeakers.com/ with the search term "speakers" why does BC speakers show up in around #50-60 and PSB is not in the top #1000? From all metrics on seomoz PSB kicks BC in every area by a large margine! can anyone see why BC is listed for that keyword and PSB is not?

E Commerce Blogging
I have an E commerce site that I want to boost search rank for. I had taken some else's advice and created a wp blog on a different url then created content around the products we offer and linked back to the main site using the specific keyword in anchor text. I just joined seomoz earlier this month. It seems like the main consensus here as far to install the blog in the domain.com/blog and I just did that. So now when I create content for that blog should I just link back to the specific categories and or products then? Should I be aware of duplicate content issues? So if the product is widgets and I am talking about widgets in the blog, or blog title, could they be competing or helping the main URL?

Questions about turning my wordpress site into an ecommerce site. Experience needed.
I have a wordpress site that is about a product that is now getting some great traffic. Right now It has affiliate stuff on it. I want to sell my own product so I will be turning this wordpress site into an ecommerce site. I want to redesign it so I am not looking for simple plugins to just add a cart. The part I am really confused about is what to do with my posts and categories? How does that work when turning this site into an ecommerce site? Lets say the site is "hats for adults" My post pages are things like "funny hats for adults", "hats for adult men" etc etc. Would I turn these posts pages into like category pages that have a category of products. Or should I create real categories and have my developer turn those into the ecommerce category pages and then redirect my posts to those categories? Maybe I don't even know what I am talking about. Is this even making sense? This is a small site (5posts and 1 category) and most of the traffic will come from the homepage keywords anyways.
