Is it okay to delete old blog posts?
-
Hi All,
I'm doing some SEO work on an entertainment (movies/tv/gaming) blog that started in 2011. Their recent articles have gained some popularity due to improved content and marketing, but there is some old stuff from the early days that was poorly written and gets virtually no traffic. These are mostly old news pieces.
Out of approximately 10,000 articles, about 1,000 are receiving the lions share of the traffic. I feel like their good content is getting bogged down in a sea of crap. Would there be any harm in deleting some of those old posts? Is there a best practice for culling content?
Thanks!

Thanks for the link. Interesting. Looks like deleting posts could have many unintended consequences. I think I'll hold off for a bit.

Thank you for outlining a clear process for me. I will proceed with extreme caution if and when I decide to delete:)

Check the ones you want to delete to see if there are any backlinks to any of them. If there are, don't delete them yet.
For those with no external links, first check the traffic for the last year. None? Then make sure there are no references (links) to them on your site. Once there are no links to the post, then delete.
If there are external links to the post, either update it and republish (301 redirect to the new URL from the old one), just keep it, or contact the site linking and ask them to change the link to an updated post. Don't waste that link equity!
Hope that helps!

Could you try disabling the posts instead of deleting them entirely? If things take a turn for the worse you could always enable them again and look into improving the posts instead.

Hi
I would recommend reading this before you do anything: http://www.koozai.com/blog/search-marketing/deleted-900-blog-posts-happened-next/
I want to do the same - but its a risk to search visibility.

There probably isn't much harm in deleting them, but I'd also see if there's any way to repurpose some of the pieces or maybe some of the topics are still relevant & can be rewritten/updated to not be "crap." Even if you don't do any updating to those old posts, I would consider archiving the pages (making sure you don't create any duplicate content!) rather than deleting them as they're likely influencing how Google understands the overall context of your site. I would review the content relevancy report in Webmaster Tools to see how Google understands your site... Click on any of the listed terms to see if those old posts are where your top KWs are occurring - should help you decide on keeping or nixing some pages.
Hope this helps!

Repurpose/reuse blog content - email address to make available for this
Hi, From Rand's recent Whiteboard Friday, I learned this: "Have right on the blog page the email address to use if they want to repurpose/reuse the content. That way if someone wants to give us a backlink and quote/reference our blog, they have an easy way to get permission." My question is, what do I say with the email address when I list our contact email? Something like 1. Just list the email address 2. "To reuse/repurpose our content, please contact adress@email.com." or something else?

Guest post prospecting
Am currently struggling with the link prospecting process for guest blogging. Right now, I've been using link prospector or just plain old Google to do link prospecting, However, this can be a really tedious process and finding the right opportunities to pursue for outreach seems to be like finding a needle in a haystack. Is there anyway in which to make this process much, much more easy and efficient, so that high quality and relevant opportunities can be found in quick timing? Also open to tips/advice on a completely different approach, for example trying out guest blog networks (e.g http://myblogguest.com) or something similar to attain sound opportunities. Much appreciated!

What platform is it better to write my blogs
In a nutshell, I have a website and on the web site I have a rolling blog updated regularly with informative ,interesting and non pushy original material. However . I notice that my website blog has a lower page and domain Authority than my original platform which is on Googles very own platform "blogger" . Should I use Blogger or the website ? or would it be better to promote the website blog on blogger ? or am I over thinking this ?

Duplicate content problems, so why does WordPress post onto Tumblr?
Hi Everyone, Basically I know that if you have duplicate content your ranking is effected! This I understand, so why is it that WordPress has the option to post your blog entry straight onto your paired Tumblr account? Surely if this can be done, I can have the same content on the company website but also on WP and Tumblr? Or is there some sort of method to how it works specifically for those 2 websites? Thanks in advance.

How to make use of blog networks?
I read on a forum recently that someone was using blog networks as his primary tool for SEO. I'm not sure what he meant beyond this, however... Can anyone provide tips on how I might use one, and which are some of the best? Thank you very much in advance.
