Wordpress vs. mvc framework
-
What's the benefits of choosing an mvc framework such as codeigniter or cakephp over wordpress?
Wordpress has so many plugins, and a universally known UI for customers, it just saves a ton of time.
However, a lot of the 'big guys' like SEOmoz and Distilled(?) use Cakephp and other mvc frameworks so it has me wondering what the benefits are......
anyone?
-
Not a huge fan of WordPress. But if you know WordPress, you would really like DNN.
-
I had the most horrible experience with Joomla, Joomla is why I went to wordpress. I had continual hacking when my site was on Joomla. Is anyone using frameworks such as genesis or thesis?
-
Another great option to consider would be Drupal CMS / CMF, where CMF stands for Content Management Framework. Drupal has a huge list on contributed modules that just make your life so much easier. It has better user-roles and permissions architecture than WP. Also the list of SEO related modules that let you tweak everything on your page (titles, urls, etc.) Drupal also provides an editor backend so editors can manage posts and pages. MemCached and Boost will make your drupal site faster and more accessible by search engines as well.
-
I'm also curious to hear why change to Joomla? I find WP to be a superior solution in many ways although not as robust as drupal and others. The support network for it is amazing and the number of plugins available for it outweight many limitations it may have as a platform.

Thanks Casey..
that's the part that was stopping me from wanting to use mvc... having to build/ maintain a different backend for each site. It just seems too redundant. Even with 'objects', you still have to update specific lines of code for each customer everytime you improve something.
Thanks for your help!

Personally if I had a choice I would use WordPress every time, since it provides my clients with access to a "backend" where they can edit pages and such if needed. CakePHP is for hard core people who love to write code and such.
I don't think we have plans to switch to that, though I'm not always in the loop on things like that.
-
Hey Casey,
Is that really the main difference? Just more control because your writing everyline of code manually?
PS. Is SEOmoz going to switch to lithium (http://lithify.me/) ?
-
Hey Donnie,
I've used both CakePHP and WordPress to some degree, in fact SEOmoz's main site is built on CakePHP. I'd say that for someone with limited coding knowledge, I'd send them to WordPress because of all the plugins. If you have a good handle on PHP and like creating your own plugins then first up CakePHP.

Changed my profile pick a month or so ago. I miss seeing my old dog Boozie though.
I switched from WP to Joomla because at the time, WP wasn't as ecommerce friendly. And I picked Joomla over Drupal because the general consensus was that while Drupal was more flexible, Joomla had an easier learning curve.
Good luck with whatever new CMS you choose.

Thanks, Richard.
I definitely keep a subscription going with lynda.com. I think we should get SEOmoz.org to add them in the discount store.

If you need to add to your PHP knowledge, try Lynda.com

-Hey, you changed you photo! (Or, I haven't noticed until now).
What made you switch to joomla?
I'm in love with wordpress, but for some reason, I feel like mvc would be worth the switch. The only problem is, it comes at a higher cost of time invested per project. So, I'm looking for motivation to make the switch
-
Hey Donnie: While I'm only a former Wordpress user and current Joomla hack, I would guess that the MVC frameworks give them more flexibility. Though that flexibility vomes at a price of having to be more proficient at PHP.

Wordpress themes causing google penalty(need experts to settle a debate)
Hi, I have been having a disagreement with another online marketing company. We are both promoting the same product under a different brand name but we ended up using the same theme to build our WordPress sites off of but in no way is the content the same. They are telling me that using the same theme in the same industry will cause a Google penalty. I do not believe this and do not see this causing a problem. The sites are relatively new so there is no proof of traffic dropping or penalties as of yet. What is everyone's professional opinion on this? Can a WordPress theme cause duplicate content penalty? If so would that not mean that anyone using themes will have some sort of penalty?

Replacing Slider Image WordPress
Hi Everyone, I decided to delete my slider from my homepage and replace it with a static image. However, after I deleted the slider, I'm left with a dark square where the slider used to be. I want to put my new static image in that same spot, but have no idea how. Does anyone know where or what code I should add to do that? The page is www.kempruge.com The WP Forums never seem to be too helpful for me, but Moz always is! Thanks in advance, Ruben

Responsive Web Design WordPress Template Suggestions
Does anyone have any RWD WP templates they would suggest? It's for a friend of mine that is starting a local solar panel installation company. For the beginning, he likely will not have more than a handful of categories and subcategories. I'd say no more than 50 total pages. Any suggestions would help. He doesn't want to spend more than $50 - $100, but he's not married to that figure if it's worth it. Thanks everyone, Ruben

How import are breadcrumbs SEO wise on a wordpress blog?
I was recently told I should take the breadcrumbs off of our site, for if no other reason than that it would look much nicer, and I tend to agree. I was curious how much seo weight breadcrumbs add to a site, and if I would take a big hit if I removed them... Thanks!

Wordpress Blog Providing SEO to Main Site
Hi, I recently started a very much "learn on the job" SEO position, transitioning from a copywriting background. We currently have a wordpress blog up and running (and producing some decent quality content too I hope!) at example.com/blog/ and a sign up page located at example.com (sorry, can't put the address right now) for a site that is being custom built as it's got some nifty software linking to back end systems. My question is whether the content on the blog will bring SEO benefits to the main domain or whether it'll just be for the blog itself? If the latter, should we navigate the blog onto the a separate page of the main site? Thanks so much! I'm learning as much as I can as quickly as I can, but somethings still get me in a little bit of a tizzy.

Can someone suggest a good wordpress plugin for compressing images?
I am building a new website and it has 500+ photo images. I've got less than 100 in there at the moment and the page speed is already very slow. I'm trying to reduce the size of the images before uploading but without a photoshop application it is very difficult. Are there any great plugins for wordpress that can help?

Drupal and Wordpress on same TLD
As Rand says on the Whiteboards, "Howdy SEOmoz fans", I am obsessed with Wordpress, but wanted to spread my wings a bit and have been playing around with Drupal. I really like it. I had the idea for a new site that would have a Drupal set up (in the front end for pages and training) with a Wordpress blog on the subdomain or a directory for the Social Media integration I like to do with Wordpress. I'm just brainstorming a couple questions: 1. Would you guys and gals recommend sticking to just one or the other for SEO or does this not really matter as long as they are deep linked well? 2. Also, would you recommend subdomain or directory for WP? Have a good one, Jared

Looking for an open source or wordpress designer that knows seo best practices
I have almost lost my patience in trying to find a web developer for our project. I have searched high and low from freelancers to us based firms. All I can find; freelancers that can't get the job done, but promise they can and us based firms that are currently getting away with murder charging through the nose on work that is not acceptable to say the least. US based Firms 1. Seem to give you as little work as possible to increase their margin. I get it we all need to make money. 2. Everyone knows how to do everything until you start telling them that you have a little education in the industry and will be testing their work. All of the sudden they no longer talk to you. 3. Got a few recommendations and they are all subpar performers. After asking them why their builds load so slow or have so many errors they have excuses that point to the customer Freelancers over seas. 1. I am not sure where to start with this. I have searched high and low in freelancer for someone that I can trust to build a site. Of course there is a ton of junk to look through. After countless hours of narrowing down the individuals I am thinking of giving a shot I find that they are not capable of the job. All I want is a new website from a firm that is honest and knows what they are doing. That is educated in seo best practices. That can build a quality website and actually has references of sites they built that are still up and running and test out alright. It is pretty bad when web development companies miss simple items like h tags. Really? Does anyone know of someone that knows what they are doing? That can work with someone that knows how to run a dvd player. Just disappointing to see all these web companies and freelancers that get away with murder. Who earns their keep in this industry?!?!?!?
